...INTRODUCTION By using Feminist Ethics theory, I will examine case of child’s play based on its principles / framework to point out what is the right decision that most benefit the parties. Differ from Deontology which is known as “Duty ethics” of Kant and Virtue ethics of Aristotte, Gilligan’s Caring ethics aim to avoid harm and maintain healthy relationships and also aim at the achievement of harmony, empathy and integration with regard to particular ethical issue. To me, this is most appropriate ethical theory for this particular ‘child’s play’ issue. Now, I shall discuss more on the case from the product manager point of view. ETHICAL DILEMA “Deal or not to deal” While buying souvenirs for my 5 years old and 7 years old nieces, I thought about those hard working children in Thailand. They also have the children’s rights. The right to freedom, right to live happily, right to study..etc. Things even go much bigger as this is not about only one family but the whole village / town has similar case. As a woman, I also want my children to enjoy their childhood and see them grow up with no suffers. If I carry on the deal with Thai Manufacturer, I will save two third on the current cost from the Portuguese supplier but no change in quality. And obviously getting huge bonus at the end of the year. On the other hand, I started asking myself: Do I put these Thai children in the right path that they should be. ARGUMENT First Option: (Deal) If deal is on, everyone will get...

ABSTRACT The main objective of this paper is to analyze the relationship between the composition and characteristics of corporate governance on the financial reporting quality of Portuguese companies. The major reference case studies on the relationship between corporate governance and the financial reporting quality are not validated by the results obtained. The results show that the board composition changes and its degree of independence do not produce any influence on the quality of the accounting information. Our study shows that although the main international guidelines relating to the rules of good governance have been followed closely by Portuguese institutions, the actual implementation of these rules did not occur. 2 1. INTRODUCTION The aim of this paper is to contribute to the study of the influence of the type of corporate governance on the financial reporting quality in countries with a tradition of continental accounting. Despite the profuse literature about this topic, adapted to Anglo-Saxon...

Our work intends to approach student addiction on alcohol in secondary level using business intelligence (BI) and Data Mining (DM) techniques. The result shows that a good predictive accuracy can be achieved, provided that addiction of alcohol can impact to the student performance. In addition, the result also provides the correlation between alcohol usage and the social, gender and study time attributes for each student. As a direct outcome of our project, more efficient prediction tools can be developed in order to pay more attention to the student and share how the alcohol impact so badly in his life. Introduction Alcohol had lots of bad impact in our life. Drinking too much on a single occasion or over time can take a serious toll on our health. If who drinks alcohol it’s likely...

...country spanning an archipelago of ten volcanic islands in the central Atlantic Ocean. It is located roughly 350 miles off the coast of Western Africa; the islands cover a combined area of slightly over 1,500 square miles. Portuguese explorers discovered and colonized the uninhabited islands, and it became the first European settlement in the tropics. It is located in an area that held the possibility of allowing the land for use in the Atlantic slave trade. The islands began to grow prosperous and often attracted privateers and pirates. Charles Darwin also visited the islands...

...Oshikango, Nambibia to the world through four case studies on Scotch whisky, Brazilian furniture, Japanese used cars and Chinese sneakers commodities. Through the case studies, he exemplifies how there has been a shift from old colonial domination of trade to new manufacturing countries or trade routes, as well as the essential role of migrant entrepreneurs in these routes. The similarity underlying the different trade networks is that while the people involved in them are of different ethnicity or country of origin, they share the same profit-seeking motive and the opportunities in the international system shape them to become successful examples as facilitators of global trade. Another key concept from the article is that of global integration via consumption. As trade booms in the town of Namibia, it invariably fuels consumption in the town and Africa as a whole. Consumption choices are a means of self-expression in relation to the world and more Africans aspire towards commodities that reflect social standing and a ‘better life’. This thus creates new dependencies on the trade networks to fulfill these desires. Scotch Whisky Trade The whisky trade is centrally organized, with production mainly based in Europe and distribution globally through exclusive representatives. Whisky remains as one of the most important good traded from Europe to Africa even in the post-colonial era and the wholesale traders mainly come from families of European background organized along ethnic...

Las Vegas, New York-New York Hotel and Casino: Paulo Pereira da Silva, the Swiss-trained physicist and CEO of Renova, a privately-owned Portuguese paper company, was attending a performance of Zumanity, the for-adults-only Cirque du Soleil production, together with Luis Saramago, the company’s marketing director. Watching the trapeze artists holding on to black fabric stripes, Paulo Pereira da Silva thought about Renova’s own artsy advertising campaigns showing nude men and stripes of Renova toilet paper. This is how he first came up with the idea of black toilet paper. Black toilet paper? To see how far-fetched the idea is, bear in mind that toilet paper is a highly commoditized category with sluggish growth and little innovation...

...Introduction Preparing to leave for Brazil my research topic influenced my packing and weighed heavily on my mind. The Zika virus was brought up to me every time I mentioned that I was going to Brazil. Family members, friends, and even coworkers stressed using bug spray and wearing long sleeves and pants to minimize the skin exposure to mosquitos. My thoughts mirrored their thoughts. I had some reservations about going to Brazil but it was one of the destinations on my long list of places to visit. I would have packed differently if the Zika virus wasn’t being discussed in the news on a regular basis. My suitcase was filled with long pants, long dresses, long shirts, and camisoles. I wanted to bring my sun dresses and shorts and tank tops as I knew that the weather would be perfect for these items. I purchased “Zika bracelets’ and Center for Disease and Control Prevention (CDC) approved mosquito repellent. I imagine other tourist going to Brazil had similar thoughts and feeling. My objective while in Brazil was to see how the announcement of the Zika virus has affected their economy in the...

...LECTURE 1 THE KHOISAN AND THEIR ENVIRONMENT Introduction: Khoisan are historically the earliest inhabitants of Southern Africa. They dominated Southern Africa for hundreds of years before the arrival of the Bantu groups. Archaeological evidence obtained from sites on the West Coast such as Kasteelberg show occupation by herders between 1600 and 1800 years ago, ie around 200-400AD They owed to a great extent their livelihood to the natural environment conditions which obtained. This is demonstrated by the fact that they derived the three basic fundamentals of life; food, shelter and clothing from the flora and fauna of the region. The San They were referred to as hunter-gatherers. [Bushmen by whites; Twa by Xhosa, Roa by Sotho and San by Khoikhoi] They occupied the mountainous, plateau and coastal areas of Southern Africa as evidenced by their paintings on rocks and cave walls throughout the sub-continent. They were neither herders nor agriculturalists, so they depended on hunting and gathering. [ie they survived on what the environment provided] Archaeological evidence has proven that the San might have made meat an important part of their diet before the invention of projectile weapons. How was this possible without weapons? The San killed newly born or sick animals Ran down animals Scavenging They drove large animals over cliffs or into swamps and then slaughtered them. Meat was thus an important part of their diet from time immemorial. As their Stone Age technology improved...

It has been peer reviewed via a double referee process and appears on the Conference Proceedings Website by the permission of the author who retains copyright. This paper may be downloaded for fair use under the Copyright Act (1954), its later amendments and other relevant legislation. 2 The Rise of Tony Fernandes and AirAsia in Malaysia This article discusses the emergence of Tony Fernandes and AirAsia. At first, when AirAsia was relaunched as a Low-Cost Carrier (LCC) under the leadership of Fernandes, no one thought the airliner would survive, let alone become a symbol of the liberalisation of the aviation industry in Southeast Asia. Second, Fernandes, a Malaysian Indian of Portuguese Malaccan descent – obviously not a Bumiputra2 - was able to thrive as an entrepreneur in an environment where the government gave top priority to Bumiputra entrepreneurs. These issues are discussed in this paper. Malaysia’s New Economic Policy (NEP) The Malaysian Government has played a significant role in Malaysia’s rapid economic growth. After the independence in August 1957, the economy shifted...
