Everywhere you look there is some type of bill

board or magazine that is talking about people

weight. What so say is the right size other think

is too small or too big. We as people try so hard

to be normal. Because some movie or TV. shows

doesn’t look like our own life. And personal

appearances is one of the first things. I know

woman who weigh less than hundred pound and

think they need to lost weigh. Where I also know

woman that weigh close to two hundred pounds

and they are happy with there weight.

I honestly disagree with how they only cast very

thin beautiful woman on these movies and TV

show. How can they make these show life like if

they don’t look like people we actually know. I

myself am not an ugly person and I know may

“pretty people” but nothing like the actors in

these movies. I have seen TV specials about

movies and TV show where they show what all

the actors have to go though and how much the

camera changes of the person. They should all be

cartoon actors if you ask me.

Then we have all these make believe actor and

woman and young teen girls put them selves

though heck trying to look like the girls on TV

and the movies. The next think they know they

have eating disorders and are having things done

to there bodies surgery. And even so woman get

to the point they have to be hospitalized. So I

wish that they would just make the people on

TV look real. We all had the good looking kids

in school and the not so good looking kids. But

people were real and that what would hopefully

save some young girl or woman from putting

their body and mind though things that they

shouldn’t.

What Do You See When You Look in the Mirror

...Student: Diana Young Course: 21st Century Skills: Information and Communication Literacy Date: 7 September 2013 Professor: Colin Witherspoon What Do You See in The Mirror? Have you ever looked at yourself in the mirror and were proud of what you saw, just to step on the scale and feel like someone is playing a trick on you? Weight is a funny thing when you are looking at the aspect of being healthy and having a productive life. Being considered a healthy person has less to do with your weight on the scale and more to do with an accurate body fat percentage. Even people who exercise and look physically fit could be considered obese when it comes down to looking at the average weight/height chart. When looking at the weight/height chart also known as The Metropolitan Life Table you first need to know some history behind it. The table was created in 1943 by a company known as the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and was later revised in 1983 (Steven B. Halls, 2008). It was designed to determine which people would have the lowest death rate (Steven B. Halls, 2008). A huge glitch to this is it was made particularly for people within the 25-29 age group and for people who were considered average height for that time (Steven B. Halls, 2008). So to say if you are tall or really short this table was not designed for you (Steven B. Halls, 2008). The original table also specified that the person should have on 1” heels and their clothes should weight approximately...

Healthy Life Style vs Fad Diets

Body calorie needs to function B. Unhealthy Calorie Count 1. Effects of low calories on the body II. Exercise A. Exercise with diet 1. Effects on weight B. No exercise with diet aids 1. Effects on maintaining weight loss III. Diet Aids vs. Healthy Choices A. Hormone/ Chemical based Aids B. Healthy Lifestyle What is the best way to lose weight and is there such a thing as a miracle diet? I have asked myself this question many times over the past sixteen years. All though school I was considered the skinny girl then when I started gaining weight it just kept coming. Diet fads are all the rage, and I have tried most of them that are on the market with some results but they never stay. So I started asking myself what is the best way to lose weight and keep it off. I had to come to the realization that there is no overnight miracle and it all takes hard work. In order to achieve a goal weight and maintain weight, miracle diets are less effective than making healthy lifestyle changes. The first thing I have learned along my weight loss search is that calories are an important factor. All diets are based on a calorie count but what is the correct calories a body needs. The calories the body consumes in a day is different for each person. To figure out how many calories a body needs to function...

Baritic Surgery

...Complementary essay on Bariatric Surgery Week 7 Adil Khan English 112: Composition Professor Robert Zancy Devry University In a world where fast food is preferred over home cooked meals, due to convenient drive-through lanes, obesity has become an epidemic throughout America. According to the Mayo Clinic “Almost two-thirds of Americans are classified as overweight, obese, or extremely (morbidly) obese and these numbers are expected to increase.”(Curry, 2003) Obesity is basically the buildup of body fat, which usually is around 20% or more over the ideal body weight. The division of medicine that treats and manages of obesity is known as bariatrics. Obesity has become a key health problem in the United States, therefore Gastric Bypass surgery has become a significant therapeutic option because of its documented efficiency in causing significant weight loss with a consequent improvement in comorbid conditions such as coronary artery disease, hypertension and diabetes. Bariatric surgery is a very invasive medical procedure that can causes dramatic weight loss which is accomplished by decreasing the size of the stomach with a gastric band or by removing a portion of the stomach itself. Weight loss surgery is the most effective and sustainable treatment option for the morbidly obesity as long as the individual is motivated to make the lifestyle changes required (Madura, 2012). Currently, bariatric surgery is the one obtainable treatment for morbidly obese individuals that consistently...

Anorexia

...Anorexia Nervosa Vs Binge Eating Society’s set standards are the reason we have beautiful girls deceived into thinking they’re not good enough. Constantly retouching photos in magazines, applying lots of makeup and performing plastic surgery on models and celebrities has formed an unachievable ideal body image that many strive to possess. Living in a world full of fake perfection introduces us to low self-esteem and a dysmorphic body image as we desperately imitate those we identify with, perceive as prestigious or rewarded by society. Anorexia nervosa and binge eating are both disorders where eating becomes a way of satisfying an emotional or psychological need instead of a physical one. They have opposite effects on the shape of the body; however, both eating disorders cause serious mental and health problems that may eventually result in either suicide or death. Anorexia nervosa is an irrational obsession with losing weight and an unreasonable fear of gaining it. Anorexic people eat very little and tend to have intense exercise routines in order to avoid weight gain. Shockingly, it’s not about food in reality; they just associate being thin with being worthy. You can’t really blame them. The media is always mocking curvy celebrities like Adele, Kate Winslet and Jessica Simpson while glorifying super skinny (rumored to be anorexic) ones like Victoria Beckham, Ariana Grande and at some point Audrey Hepburn. J.K Rowling once expressed: “is ‘fat’ worse than ‘vindictive’...

The Adkins Diet vs the South Beach Diet

...The Adkins Diet vs. the South Beach Diet Tonya Richardson COM 155 May 5, 2012 Michele Armentrout The Adkins Diet vs. the South Beach Diet The Adkins diet is famous for claims of weight loss, but the South Beach diet is said to be a more heart healthy choice for dieters. Most diets are hard to follow, and have so many restrictions on food that people often get fed up and revert to their old eating habits, instead of continuing with a new diet plan. A diet that restricts certain foods may be setting a dieter up for failure, when they give into temptation, and indulge in their favorite foods not included in their diet. The Adkins and South Beach diet offer a variety of foods that include healthy and tasty choices, even for the pickiest eaters. Both diets are similar, and start out with an induction phase that restricts the foods you eat, and lasts about two weeks. The Adkins diet relies solely on counting the total number of carbohydrates you eat in a day, and the South Beach diet relies on the size and portion of carbohydrates eaten each day. Both diets result in about the same number of carbohydrates per day, but are calculated using different methods. So, let`s explore the reason we want to lose weight in the first place. First, we all want to improve our current health and prolong our lives. Unfortunately, because we tend to eat unhealthy foods, we experience weight gain and are acceptable to health related problems, such as high cholesterol. Changing your eating...

...Organic Virgin Coconut Oil - A Healthy Oil The Coconut Oil Story Virgin Coconut Oil: An introduction For about 3960 years of the of the past 4000 years of the documented historical use of the fruits of the coconut palm as a food and a pharmaceutical, the news has all been good. It was seen as a sustainable resource from which the harvested materials influenced every aspect of the lives of tropical communities, but most importantly its fruit, the coconut flesh, water, milk and oil. The use of coconut oil around the world in tropical regions is prolific: South and Central America, Africa, the Indian subcontinent, Micro-, Mele- and Poly-nesia and most of Asia. The uses are so respected that they were documented by Ayurvedic medicine in Sanskrit from 1500BC in all areas relating to the mind, body and spirit. Early European explorers including Captain Cook wrote affectionately about the beauty of communities across the Pacific using coconut oil as an integral part of their daily lives. During WWII the water of the young green coconut was successfully used as a substitute for a saline drip saving the lives of many allied soldiers. After the war, in England coconut oil was sold as "margarine" and in the USA as "coconut butter". However, this all changed in 1954. In the social environment of the USA in which coronary heart disease (CHD) was becoming the primary cause of mortality in the adult population, the young researcher David Kritchevsky published two academic papers. The initial...

Reasons Why Poor and Fat Go Hand in Hand

...Reasons Why Poor and Fat Go Hand In Hand | | | | | Being fat or plump used to be a sign of health and prosperity. If you look at pictures taken during the era of The Great Depression, you can see clear as day that the poor people in line at the soup kitchens were thin as tooth picks while the well-off crowd was pleasantly plump. Today however, that trend has reversed itself. Pictures of terribly obese people at Wal-Mart paying for their groceries with food stamps are now the norm while the better off crowd are skinny and svelte looking. There are many theories as to why this has happened and in the book, Omnivore’s Dilemma, Pollan reasons that is because the cost per calorie has become exceedingly cheap. Simply put, it is cheaper to eat non-healthy items and pack on the weight in the process, or in other words, it is cheaper to be fat. Some make the argument that lack of education in the poor communities is the main culprit of poor obesity. The argument states that poor people just do not have the education necessary to know what and what not to eat. This may have some validity in it, which I will address later, but it does not change the fact that, as stated by Pollan in The Omnivore’s Dilemma: “that a dollar could buy 1,200 calories of potato chips and cookies; spent on a whole food like carrots, the same dollar buys only 250 calories. On the beverage aisle, you can buy 875 calories of soda for a dollar, or 170 calories of fruit juice from concentrate...

Reflection Of Personality

...the belief that one's life is determined by forces outside oneself, one's interests, or one's wishes, and the only way to be happy is to submit to those forces. The authoritarian submits to those who are higher up and steps on those who are below. Quite awakening call for me. What’s very evident until this moment is its very hard for me to trust a person, I have no confidence on the world around me, and sometime it results to anxiety and insecurities. I know maybe this is the reason why my past relationships were affected by my trust issues, but I am not really sure what the possible causes of this conflict are. According to Erik Erikson’s Psychosocial Theory, as I have observed and as I have seen, I will always look onto Stage 1: Trust vs. Mistrust and will lead me to Sullivan's theory of particular importance are the personifications of the caring, nurturing good mother and the anxious bad mother. For Sullivan, the oral stage is about eating: the infant gets hungry, and can satisfy that hunger through nursing at its mother's breast. Just as there are "good" and "bad" mothers, so there are "good" and "bad" nipples. A "good" nipple is a source of hunger satisfaction. A "bad" nipple is attached to an anxious mother. But what I remember was my mother wasn’t able to breast fed me; I was forced to drink formula milk right ahead because she cannot be able to produce milk even how hard she tried. It can be assess that we don’t have that much bond and attachment at very young age....

Metabical: Positioning and Communications

...Q1: What is the Decision-making process for Metabical? Who is involved in the process? Consumer research over the years has shown that shoppers often follow a relatively common shopping behavior for product purchase. In theory, a shopper is said to go through the following five stages as a process. In reality, sometimes the steps may be switched around or even left out, as not all consumers are by rule, always alike. The decision-making process (DMP) for Metabical, Cambridge Sciences Pharmaceuticals‘ (CSP) new weight-loss drug involves several people. The product end-user is the main subject of the decision-making process, but other external parties interject at different stages, influencing the consumer’s ultimate decision. Below is the flow Metabical’s consumers would go through as part of their shopping behaviors. Stage 1: Need Recognition & Problem Awareness A recognition occurs that consumers are unhappy with their current body image, their weight or their unhealthy lifestyle. This can come from consumers’ existing, continuous dissatisfaction in terms of their weight physical appearance. It can also be triggered by external media sources such as TV, Outdoor, Radio or Magazine advertisements whereby a variety different visuals, articles, messages can lead to consumer awareness that there is a problem, and a need, that must be satisfied. At this point, both the consumer and the respective media agents are involved in process. Stage 2: Information Search In...

Development Through the Life Stages- Michael Jackson

...Development through the life stages The human lifespan Throughout this essay I will be going into depth of the life of Michael Jackson. I will be informing you on what he went through in each life stage he went experienced and also including debates on nature and nurture and discussing which sides affected him as a person. Infancy Michael Jackson was born in a poverty stricken area called Gary, in Indiana. He was born in 1958 and was the 7th of nine children. He was raised in a poor, lower class family this may be because he had one working parent which was his father called Joe Jackson, He was a steel worker in a factory however his mother was a home maker. For every infant the same developments occur. As there isn’t a lot of information about Michael when in infancy I can still figure out what happened during the ages 0-3 years old. Reflexes and motor skills are learnt at the ages between 0-2, this is when an infant will learn the different sensations. The reflexes involve, sucking, grasping, blinking and stepping. It’s also normal for an infant’s weight to change so Michael also experienced weight change whilst growing in this stage. Michael would have developed gross motor skills at this stage, this means he had the ability to turn and hold his head up. Other motor skills would be learning to sit up, roll over, stand up and also walk. Social development of an infant is the social skills that are learnt at the ages of 0-3 years old. Michael would have experienced many...

...unmatched R&D capability enabling them to research on new ice cream products to satisfy consumers’ needs and retain their loyalty. In addition, Nestlé also has a huge resource pool, which they can utilize to expand their product lineup and business portfolio through various merger and acquisitions. Nestlé entered into the US premium ice cream market in 2002 through the acquisition of Dreyer’s ice cream followed shortly by Movenpick in Switzerland and Häagen-Dazs. This acquisition allowed Nestlé to venture into highly desirable niche premium market and expand their global coverage. It was not long before Nestlé overtook Unilever as the biggest ice cream manufacturer in 2011, in terms of both sales volume and market share (Nestlé: 17.5% vs Unilever: 16%). Switzerland, despite being Nestlé’s home market, did not provide a significant inflow of revenue. On the other hand, Nestlé derived most of its revenue from foreign markets which it has penetrated into, for example the USA and Europe. When news of the booming financial market in Asia went viral, Nestlé did not lack to expand its influence into emerging markets in Asia, especially China whereby they sell ice cream to cater for the local taste through its multidomestic corporate strategy. ...Metabical: Positioning and Communications Strategy for a new Weight-Loss Drug Q & A 1. Who is involved in the decision making process? What is the decision making process for Metabical? Since Metabical is a prescription drug for weight loss which can only be bought via a prescription, the overweight patients are not the only decision makers involved. The health care providers are also decision makers in this process for they are the ones who prescribe the drug. The consumer decision making process (J.Paul Peter & Donnelly, Ch3, p.49) for Metabical goes through five stages: a) Perceiving or recognizing a need. According to the case, 65 % of Americans are overweight. Many perceive themselves as social outcasts. Here Metabical ties in with a variety of needs in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs: the need for belongingness and love for companionship. After all no one likes being excluded. Exclusion can also negatively impact one’s self esteem. So it also ties in with the need for self esteem and self actualization since excess weight negatively impacts hiring, wages, and job promotion. b) Alternative Search: Once the need for love and belonging, and self esteem is recognized the overweight individual collects information from marketing sources like ads, or public sources like newspapers and magazines. The consumer might even ask his health care provider about it. He/she might even ask their overweight friends i.e. group sources who tried many diet drugs...
