Unit 3 Water
In this unit the issue is one of water. Although water covers 66.67% of the earth, only 3% is drinkable and of that drinkable water 70% is frozen in glaciers. This means there is only 30%; of the initial 3%, of fresh drinkable water available to us. Water is by far the most valuable resource on this planet. It is needed not only to sustain life for human, plants and animals, but also to support other daily activities that we have in addition to just living. Although we are lucky enough to have an abundance of water in northern America, there are many countries that don’t have an easily accessed supply of fresh water. Many countries, particularly those in the Middle East are continuously fighting for water.
Because of the need for water, and the limited amount on the earth this directly involves me. I never have really taken it for granted, but often times I do not try to limit myself in some aspects. I am lucky enough to live in a country where I do not have to fight or have my loved ones fight for water just to live. I need to be aware of other’s struggles and try to decrease my water usage for others.
I know I am guilty of taking extra long showers, running the water while I wash my face, or turning on the dishwasher or washing machine when it is not completely full and will just have to do it again soon. These are the actions I am willing and able to take to reduce my water usage. By changing these simple things I know that it may not seem like a lot in the moment, but it will make a difference. Especially if others make this type of effort as well. Change starts with myself, and then continues from there. If I make an effort the rest of my household, friends and family in my circle will. Then hopefully we will all have less water usage.
