...MICROFINANCE STANDARDS RATIOS A maturing microfinance industry needs standardized methods to measure and analyze financial performance and risk management. The proposed Microfinance Financial Reporting Standards: Measuring Financial Performance of Microfinance Institutions (the Standards) seeks to address this need. These Standards are designed for use by all microfinance institutions (MFIs): non-governmental organizations, non-bank financial institutions or companies, commercial banks, rural banks, credit unions, and cooperatives. Below are the detailed description of each ratio and table. 1. Profitability Ratios All MFIs, from non-profit NGOs, to for-profit banks, must be profitable over the long-term in order to be self-sustaining. Profitability allows an MFI to continue operating and to grow. Profitability ratio is any ratio that measures a company's ability to generate cash flow relative to some metric, often the amount invested in the company. Profitability ratios are useful in fundamental analysis which investigates the financial health of companies. An example of a profitability ratio is the return on investment which is the amount of revenue an investment generates as a percentage of the amount of capital invested over a given period of time. Other examples include return on sales, return on equity, and return on common stock equity. Operational Self-Sufficiency (originally called “Operating Self-Sufficiency” or OSS) and Financial Self-Sufficiency (FSS)...

...Financial Terminology Financial management is such a fascinating subject. A lot of people would ask, “Why?” Financial management can be easily explained as the management of money. Financial management is crucial for both individuals and organizations because it deals with managing funds. It guides a company and individual in making optimum use of money to achieve maximum returns. While working on this specific assignment I decided to concentrate on financial ratio analysis, since I am the business owner, and most of the financial terms like balance sheet, shareholder’s equity, EBITDA, EBITDAM, financial ethics, financial benchmarking I am very familiar with. I must admit that understanding financial ratio analysis I found somehow difficult, this is why I decided to concentrate on this topic. Summary of Articles The first article that I read is called “Financial Ratios, Discriminant Analysis and the Predictions of Corporate Bankruptcy” by Edward I. Altman, published 1968 in the Journal of Finance. The article says that academicians are seeking to eliminate ratio analysis as an analytical technique in assessing the performance of a business. According to the article theorists are attacking the relevance of ratio analysis. The article explores the possibility of whether the gap between traditional ratio analysis and more rigorous statistical techniques can be bridged. According to the article the traditional ratio analysis is no longer an important analytical...

...from 84 to 180 months. A sale is recognized when payment is received or in this case of credit sales, when a down payment (5 to 10%) is received and the company and the customer enter into an installment contract. At the time of sale, the company receives immediate payment for the stated principal amount of the installment contract and a portion of the finance participation resulting from the interest rate differential. This accounting treatment is reasonable/not reasonable, because the way Manufactured Homes accounts for these transactions as sales are in accordance with Statement of Financial Accounting Standards. They recognize their sales at the moment the manufactured homes are sold and they will get paid immediately. So it’s approved if we look to the matching principle. 3. The company generally sold the majority of its retail installment contracts to unrelated financial institutions on...

...the Hong Kong financial institutions will be examined. It will be followed by the discussion of the effectiveness of various measures undertaken by the relevant parties to tackle the issue. Finally the hidden problems after the crisis will be covered. Hong Kong, being a small open economy and highly integrated with the global economy and markets, would not possibly immune from the global credit crisis. According to HKMA (2008), the profitability of retail banks deteriorated in 2008. The net interest margin for 2008 fell to 1.84% compared with 1.90% in 2007, whereas the non-interest income of retail banks dwindled to 37.4% from 43.0% in 2007. Moreover, the interbank liquidity was tightened. The liquidity ratio fell from 53% in 2007 to 45% in 2008 from HKMA (2008). The asset quality was deteriorated, too. As revealed from HKMA (2008), the classified loan ratio and overdue and rescheduled loan ratio increase to 1.24% and 0.68% in 2008 from 0.85% and 0.57% respectively. Turbulence in global financial markets resulted in tightened credit conditions in Hong Kong. Since banks were reluctant to lend out too much money, interest rates for interbank borrowings rose sharply. Growth in domestic credit turned negative to -3.5% in the fourth quarter of 2008 from 2.7% in the third quarter, reflecting a conservative lending style by banks. Another notable effect includes a run on Bank of Asia, reflecting some panic response by investors and financial institutions. Although the...

...1. The key aspects of Manufactured Homes(MNH) are the selling of manufactured homes at a big price range with the focus on the lower end of the market and the financial participation. MNH sells the mortgages of the customers to unrelated financial institutions and earn money by the difference in the interest rates. MNH sold mobile homes in the Southeast US, primarily to low-income individuals who could not afford a traditional single-family home. The company sells affordable comfort. The company believed that its focus on the lower end of the market had two advantages. First, since its customers were seeking to fulfill an essential housing need, sales were less affected by changes in general economic conditions. Second, the company’s repossession rates were significantly lower than those of the industry since its customers were likely to work very hard to keep their primary residences even when times were bad. Although the market will be very competitive this year, we think the company’s special attention to the low-end of the market, to which many large competitors pay less attention, will give MH a solid niche position. MNH has a viable business, because it earns their money with two different aspects that are related to each other. The selling of manufactured homes to the lower end of the market and the selling of the mortgages (installment contracts) on a recourse basis. When the customers buy a home it is easy for them to buy a mortgage with it at the same company. Another...

...Islamic Economics and Finance Measurement of Financial Development: A Fresh Approach Noureen Adnan 1 Financial development can be defined as the policies, factors, and the institutions that lead to the efficient intermediation and effective financial markets. A strong financial system offers risk diversification and effective capital allocation. The greater the financial development, the higher would be the mobilization of savings and its allocation to high return projects. Financial development can be measured by a number of factors including the depth, size, access, and soundness of financial system. It can be measured by examining the performance and activities of the financial markets, banks, bond markets and financial institutions. It is observed that higher the degree of financial development in a country, the wider will be the availability of financial services. A developed financial system offers higher returns with less risk. In this paper it is attempted to collect main components of financial development including Banks, Stock markets, insurance companies and bond markets for 41 economies during the period of 1988 to 2009.
