...Saving Private Ryan 1998, dir. Steven Spielberg, Sound Designer Gary Rydstrom War movies often rely on the visual to communicate the events and emotion of each scene. This works up to a point, but viewers cannot fully relive battle in this way. Background music and limited sound effects make war movies generic, predictable, and sometimes historically inaccurate. In contrast, Gary Rydstrom uses sound to communicate emotion and portray realistic battle scenes in a way that makes the viewers feel as though they are actually part of Saving Private Ryan. One unique aspect of this movie, as opposed to other war movies, is that there is no background music in the battle scenes. Music in movies tends to make viewers realize they are watching the movie, but without it, the experience is so much more authentic. The battle scenes are shot with a handheld camera, giving them a shaky and chaotic feel. Because of this, the viewer does not really get the chance to experience the full breadth of the battle through the shot. Humans experience sound at all angles, as opposed to the one angle at which we experience sight. The dynamic sound effects of the battle scenes can completely engulf the viewer, helping them to have the full experience of trauma. Rydstrom paid particularly close attention to certain sound effects in these battle scenes to help them be as historically correct as possible. A variety of gunshot noises appear in each battle scene, each one corresponding to a different weapon...

After growing in popularity he and his fellow gladiators are sent to Rome where he later forms a plot with Lucilla, Commodus’ sister, and Senator Gracchus to overthrow his nemesis, Commodus, and to return Rome to a senate-based government. Maximus was successful in his attempt to lead his followers and defeat his enemy through his charismatic leadership style and his reliance on his expert and referent power. Maximus exudes charisma through his self-confidence and humility in which he leads his followers. In the beginning of the film, Maximus walks the talk by fighting on the front lines of battle amongst his army with the Germanic barbarians. In order to inspire his men, Maixmus uses imagery and rhetorical language to motivate his army to be strong and succeed...

...Identification of Chemotaxis Protein Substrates in Thiomicrospira crunogena Introduction Thiomicrospira crunogena is a Gram negative, aquatic, colorless sulfur oxidizing, chemolithoautotrophic bacterium. Cells are spiral shaped 0.2-0.3 µm in diameter and 1-2µm long, some individual cells can reach up to 30 µm long (3). T. crunogena is motile via a singular polar flagellum. It is the first deep-sea autotrophic hydrothermal vent bacterium to have its genome fully sequenced and annotated (1). Originally isolated from the East Pacific Rise, it is commonly isolated from deep-sea hydrothermal vent communities where warm, CO2 rich hydrothermal fluid that surges from cracks in the basal crust mixes with cold, oxic bottom water (1). This mixture creates eddies, or whirling of water similar to a vortex where the dilute hydrothermal fluid causes a dynamic habitat with respect to time and nutrient concentrations. The warm hydrothermal fluid emitted from the fissures contains CO2 concentrations between 0.02 mM to >1 mM where as the bottom water is around 2°C and contains CO2 concentrations less than 0.02 mM (1). This difference in CO2 concentration, temperature and oxygen concentration causes T. crunogena to be just as dynamic metabolically in order to survive in an ever-changing environment. As previously mentioned, T. crunogena is a chemolithoautotrophic bacterium deriving it’s energy from inorganic compounds such as hydrogen sulfide, thiosulfate, elemental sulfur...

...virtue against corporation’s coercive power. The case studies, a dangerous Business Revisited produced by Frontline and Big Boys Gone Bananas, directed by Fredrik Gertten, shows the power individuals have or gain when fighting against a large company; the points of comparison will be the hero’s response to threat, and the rewards or consequences of acts of heroism and virtue. The first point of comparison is hero’s responding to threat in the case studies, Big Boys Gone Bananas and Dangerous Business Revisited. In BBGB at the time of 4:12 until 6 minutes, Dole fruit Company threatened to sue Mr. Gertten and his employees with a cease and desist letter if they continue trying to show their film. Mr. Gertten showed his film anyway at the L.A. Flim Festival because he believed strongly in freedom of speech. Doles lawyers served a law suit due to the showing of the film (29:20). Gertten’s response to this threat was to fight back against the billion dollar industry and their powerful resources which consist of media manipulation, and scare tactics. At 57-58 minutes he and his staff decided to counter sue Dole because they were oppressing their freedom of speech. Mr. Gertten didn’t want to back down because social justice is at stake and filmers shouldn’t be censored. He placed this above all the scare tactics and coercive powers Dole’s threat conveys. It didn’t matter if he won or not but that he tried, this is a heroic quality. Ultimately, he wanted better working conditions food Doles...

...artifact…it was Tommy Powell, David Less, me, Chip Reid, Mr Ed (Williamson), KC Jones, Susan Elliott…we were the ones involved in all that, who found it and got it saved. The employees transported the artifacts, bricks, and mosaic Stax sign to Mud Island for safekeeping while Shlenker secured the funding for the museum. However, several internal and external factors caused the realization of the music museum and the rebuilt Stax inside to never materialize. This confluence of events caused the artifacts to remain in its Mud Island resting place for over a decade and transformed Sidney Shlenker from savior into one of the most despised characters in the history of Memphis. Today, many Memphis citizens refer to Shlenker as a “scammer,” “a flim flam artist,” and other colorful descriptions that reflect their extreme disappointment. To them, he oversold promises and returned nothing but underwhelming results and debt to build the music museum and turn the Pyramid into a source of civic pride. As a part of the contract with the city of Memphis to develop and operate the Pyramid, Shlenker agreed that while the city maintained ownership, he would secure funding to both reimburse its investment and develop various attraction both within and outside of the structure. However, due to this arrangement many investors and sponsors were weary to commit funds to the Pyramid. Additionally, the United States economy entered into a recession in 1990 due to a restrictive monetary policy set...

Or is language ability the product of the environment? o What is the “critical period” for language development? o Was Genie cognitively disabled at birth, or because of the environment in which she was raised? o Use examples from Genie’s case to support your ideas. Other ideas for discussion include: 1. Do you agree with the allegations of the lawsuit against the Genie team and Children’s Hospital that Genie was exploited for research and her privacy was violated to the detriment of her treatment? Was there an unavoidable conflict between the goals of research and Genie's need to receive treatment and care? Did harm come out of the researchers' good intentions? 2. ...Across the Universe Film Analysis Alisha Liboma English 225: Intro to Film Professor Denise Orpustan-Love July 30, 2012 The Beatles were one of the worlds most influential and iconic bands who evolved in the 1960’s from Liverpool, England. For years people have found refuge in their lyrics that calm, inspire, and awe us to this day. Across the Universe not only provides the audience with a more in-depth look at the Beatles’ lyrical explorations, but also incorporates the use of filming techniques such as, cinematography, editing and sound techniques. It also gives us a closer look at the Vietnam War, struggling singers, love and life during a revolutionary period in U.S history that would prove to be unforgettable. This review will encompass topics such as “mise en scène,” (Goodykoontz, 2011), storytelling, cinematography techniques and the meanings behind the directors actions in a film. The names of the characters in Across the Universe, with the exception of the character “Max,” played by Joe Anderson, were all derived from original Beatles songs. For example there is a character named “Jude,” from the song, “Hey Jude,” who’s character is played by Jim Sturgess, as well as a character named “Lucie,” played by Evan Rachel Wood, and, “Prudence”, played by T.V Carpio. In any part of the movie you see, you can find a character of a Beatle’s song. Using the Beatles’ music to create a flow to the movie allows for all types of audience members to connect to the film. While...
