College athletics had a range from $8 million to $124 million in 2008 alone, with Crimson Tide, Longhorns, Buckeyes, Gators and Volunteers among the top five (ESPN, n.d.). Among the professional leagues, the National Football League (NFL) generated $9.5 billion, Major League Baseball (MLB) generated $7.7 billion, National Basketball Association (NBA) generated $4.3 billion and the National Hockey League (NHL) generated $3.2 billion in 2012 (Gaines, 2012). Sports depend on the teams, teams depend on athletes, athletes depend on endorsements and the endorsements rely on fans.
