“You’re black!” “You’re yellow!” People will always be identified as their skin color, I do not know how whites developed a superiority complex. “FOBs vs. Twinkies” by Grace Hsiang and “Black Men and Public Space” by Brent Staples are two articles highlighting racial discrimination. Hsiang’s article focuses on intraracial discrimination while Staples’ articles focuses on racial stereotyping outside of his race. In ‘“FOBs” vs. “Twinkies”’ the author is surprised to hear about intraracial discrimination because she expected to hear about whites vs. the minority. Hsiang’s article is more geared to the Asian communities that are being americanized versus the communities that are sticking to their roots. The title of the article is “FOBs vs. Twinkies” after all. “Not all young Asian Americans buy into the dichotomy between “FOBs” and “Trinkies”. Many, like me, understand the term “Asian American” in all its complexity, and embrace all sides of our identity. Rather than identifying with one culture or another, my friends and I accept both (FOBs pg 343).” This quote demonstrates how Hsiang see’s the community and how she wants the articles to be projected. The article is exemplifying the intraracial points taken by the differently raised Asians. “When Asian Americans hit puberty, they seem to divide into two camps, each highly critical of the other (FOBs pg 342).” This quote illustrates how the community is divided into two halves. Staple’s article brings to light an enamored amount of racism between blacks and whites. “It was in the echo of the terrified woman’s footfalls that I began to know the unwieldy experience that I’d come into- the ability to alter public space in ugly ways (Black Men pg 347).” The quote states that because Staple’s is black he carries an unspoken sense of terror with him at all times. People feel uncomfortable by his presence in public space because he is black. He has faced many accounts of racial profiling throughout his life by all kinds of different people. The article is written with many personal experiences that Staple’s has gone through and endured. “At dark, shadowy intersections, I could cross in front of a car stopped at a traffic light and elicit the thunk, thunk, thunk, thunk of the driver- black, white, male, or female- hammering down the door locks (Black Men pg 347).” This is just one of many experiences that Staple’s experienced while living in Chicago. The article is filled with his own personal experiences of hate and racism. This cannot be taken lightly because he’s just one black man who’s spoken up about these stereotypes. The articles “FOB’s vs. Twinkies” by Grace Hsiang and “Black Men and Public Space” by Brent Staples both illuminate different types of racism. The articles have many similarities and many differences, they are similar in that
