Focus on the Good Things in Life

I believe that bullying is wrong. Sometimes people can be so oblivious to what they are saying to someone. It doesn’t matter if it’s on purpose or not. People should think about what you say before you say it.

I was struggling for the longest time with depression because I felt like I didn’t belong in school. I felt like there was no place for me in school with all the other people. When you’re being bullied sometimes you’re afraid to speak out or tell a teacher or your parents. I let every little thing anyone said about me get to me. It hurt; not just in an emotional way, but a physical way as well. When you’re being bullied you can’t help but feel helpless. I was too scared to tell anyone about my problems. I never told my parents, friends, or my teachers. I was too afraid of being judged even more. Even after the bullying stopped all the words and things people said to me got stuck in my head. The bullying went on for like a year or so and then it went away because I started fixing everything that other people thought were wrong. I got skinnier, I grew my hair out, I just started to try and “fit in”. The things people said to me still float around in my head sometimes. Mostly when I’m lying in bed at night, it all comes back to me. I did struggle in school for a while and I still kind of am, but it’s getting better and I’m a lot more focused on the important things in life, like school.

What I’ve learned is that you can’t let the pointless, irrelevant things people say get to you. Sometimes letting those things get to you can really mess up how you think and all your major goals you set for yourself. I let that happen and I didn’t do so well in school, but I’m slowly but surely getting back to where I used to be in life. I don’t want all the things people say to me get to me anymore and if you are struggling with the same thing I advise you to cut some things out of your life and not let certain people in your life that don’t need to be in there, in. I know that one of the main problems I had was trusting people too easily. Don’t let people in your life easily, because even your “friends” can bully you; it can hurt you in the long run.

Everyman

...Tristan Brophy English 12 February 11, 2015 Everyman Everyman is an attempt to portray the significance of man’s morality; it focuses on faith based on works. The focus is not on good deeds already obtained but on locating said deeds before proceeding to death. Everyman noticeably centers on the Catholic religion that was prevalent during medieval times, unlike the Protestant view that bases religion on faith alone. It was very important that people are aware of the fate of their souls if they ignored good deeds. Everyman made it apparent to everyone that without “good deeds” they would not to heaven. It did not require that these good deeds transpire over time but that they can be found through “knowledge”, before death came. The interpretation of this play is that one’s eternity depends on the good works that they do in life. This play makes an effort to explain the need for salvation and God in one’s life. It is considered a morality play which focus’ on what behavior is customary and accepted as praiseworthy and respectable. However, when Death comes, it does not demand that Everyman be ready instantaneously to give account for his life. Death gives notice and warns him when he says, “See thou make thee ready shortly”. Therefore giving Everyman the opportunity to make himself ready for death. Everyman looks to Fellowship for comfort, after becoming aware of his failure in the works department. He does not look for his works to save him from his fate...

`Everyman’s Good Deeds

...Everyman, in its attempt to clearly depict the importance of man’s morality, focuses on a faith based on works, however; this focus is not on good deeds already obtained but on locating said deeds before proceeding to death. It would seem, then, that it is not necessary for Everyman to reflect on good deeds he has performed but that he find a way to acquire them quickly. Unlike the Protestant view, which bases religion on faith alone, Everyman noticeably centers on the Catholic religion that was prevalent during medieval times. Since illiteracy was a vast problem, Catholic religious leaders needed to get their message out to their followers. It was vital that these people become aware of the fate of their souls if they disregarded works. Everyman made it clear to all that saw it that without “good deeds” they had no way to heaven. It did not, however, require that these good deeds be performed over time but that they could be found, through “knowledge”, before death came. It is crucial to the interpretation of this drama that one believe that their eternity depends on the good works that they do in life. The fact that this is considered a “morality play” predicts that there will be a focus on what behavior is customary and accepted as upright. Yet, when Death comes, it does not demand that Everyman be ready instantaneously to give account for his life. Death gives notice and warns him when he says, “See thou make thee ready shortly”, and herein giving Everyman opportunity to...

7 Habits of Highly Effective People

...Zach Bayreuther 3-5-13 Leadership Studies 251 “Two Habits I Need to Work on” When reading the book Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, written by Stephen R. Covey, I learned that I need to work on some things, if I want to be successful. I need to set specific goals because goals are what drive people to be successful. Covey talks about a “Paradigm Shift” and wants his readers to change their mindset. He proposes seven habits that effective people portray throughout their life and he wants everybody to pick these up in order to be more successful. The two habits that I am going to focus on are Habit 1: Be Proactive, and Habit 4: Think Win-Win. I want to focus on these two because when reading about these two, I feel that if I can improve these habits, I can bolster my mindset/life. I feel that everybody can be more proactive. This is Covey’s first habit. This habit discusses that your decisions are the primary factor for determining effectiveness in your life. You have to take responsibility for your choices and the consequences that follow your decisions. You choose if you are happy or sad. Every second that you live, you decide what you are doing with your life. Covey then says that if you’re not happy with your life, change it. It only takes one decision. However, it starts with one decision but that one may trigger a bunch of others. You cannot blame everything on your parents or grandparents. Covey talks about two different people in this chapter...

The Mental Game of Baseball: a Guide to Peak Performance

...from major and minor league players, who at some point in their career discovered the importance of mastering the inner game in order to play baseball as it should be played. H.A. Dorfman, and Karl Kuehl divided this book into sections. These sections are Goals, Focus and Control, Expectations, Dedication, Responsibility, Attitudes, Confidence, Preparation, Concentration, Mental Discipline, and the winning way. The purpose of this was to focus on each of these aspects individually, and not clump them all together. In the first section titled goals, the books describes that the baseball players need to set performance and end result goals. Then the players must set process and action goals in order to achieve performance goals. These direct and determine their behavior, which creates focus. Goals make players take risks. By not setting goals, it allows the players to float, eliminating pressure and responsibility and then they are unable to handle the anxiety. The goals that players set on themselves, the chance of anxiety becomes much less. Focus and control should be on each individual player within the framework of the baseball team. The focus and control on each player is very important. It transfers the focus from the opponent who...

Life Is a Camera

...Life is a Photographic Telescope (Also known as a camera) The obstacles we go through in life directly affect who we become by providing us with memories to last a lifetime. We all lead different lives, and we all make different decisions, thus we all have different moments that we’ve captured to look back on. The metaphor “life is a camera” describes how everyone has different perspectives on life. The things we experience and how we react to them directly influence the people we will become. Like a camera, we can focus on what’s important, capture moments, develop from negatives, and take another shot when things go wrong. So power up, pick a moment and seize it. Your life is passing by. What are you going to do with it? First, take a step back and focus in on what’s important. Don’t be misguided by the loads of junk nearby. In life you have to appreciate the beautiful things you’re given. It’s easy to dwell on the long lines, and the mean things people say about you, but by crumbling under the despair of what others think of you is a telltale sign that you’ve forgotten what is actually worth worrying about. The opinion of those who are actually important to you, those who hold a special place inside you, those are the people whose opinions matter. Don’t lose yourself to the hogwash of everyday life. You’re alive. So be grateful. Life is filled with flaws, and you will probably never be put in an ideal situation. Deal with it. If you’re searching for your perfect ending...

13 Virtues by Ben Franklin

...THE GOOD LIFE Lessons from Ben Franklin’s 13 Virtues WHY THIS TOPIC? ● ● Ben Franklin created these 13 virtues at the age of 20 (!) and practiced them most of his life. He focused on one per week I love the diversity and simplicity of his virtues. They cover large and small aspects of the good life :) WHO’S THE AUTHOR? Franklin is a fascinating historical figure: a Founding Father and Renaissance Man (scientist, journalist, businessman, statesman), he was well-respected and enormously influential in his time; his writings, teachings, and discoveries deeply improved our lives. WHAT’S IT ABOUT? Franklin always carried a booklet with these 13 virtues. Each time he disobeyed a virtue, he’d mark it in his booklet. Since he focused on one virtue per week, he’d complete 4 cycles each year (13 virtues, 52 weeks). Here’s my (loose) interpretation of his virtues: 1. Temperance. Don't overeat or overdrink 2. Silence. Speak only when you have something good to say 3. Order. Organize your life; pay attention to ALL aspects of your work 4. Resolution. Always do what you say you'll do 5. Frugality. Spend little and spend wisely 6. Industry. Use your time wisely; stop doing wasteful things 7. Sincerity. Don't lie; be honest and fair 8. Justice. Don't harm others or ignore your obligations to them 9. Moderation. Avoid extremes; don't hold grudges 10. Cleanliness. Regularly clean your body, your clothes, and your home 11. Tranquillity. Don't get upset at small or...

The Substance of Life

...I think that overall life is a grand mystery where we all at some point wish to find our purpose and meaning of life. I believe the substance of life is spiritual for most people but I’m somewhat indecisive. It is kind of hard to determine if I believe in God because it is what was taught, or do I believe in a higher spiritual being to cope with life. Belief in a God is common and different religions praise different forms of God. God is frequently called the ultimate judge, with equal attributes to supernatural powers. This creates a debate in those that are judgmental. It allows developing behavior to be based on new principles of right and wrong. Behavior that deviates might otherwise be blocked out by the sensibilities that the majority finds justification and fellowship in a new group who can appeal to the authority of their god. People believe in god because it feels good, satisfying the natural desire for validation of their thoughts and acts. God is easier to convey as a behavior enforcer than group will, so it finds endless application as a social bond. Voltaire has long been quoted, "If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him”. Deism supports a belief in God, but a God who does not uphold the moral values we feel he should. It explains a logical question that I ponder on often, which is suffering. For me it makes it hard to swallow the notion that God would allow certain events to happen in life. Recently I have been looking into the Egyptian religion...

The Little Things

...of the good things that can happen to you throughout the day, you don’t really notice how many small things there are that can have a positive effect. Small things on their own aren’t much, but when you start to add them up they can become something huge. For instance, playing fetch with my Labrador Buddy, or giving in to that craving of chocolate and enjoying every bite are very small things in the grand scheme of things, but take either out of my life and it would be a tragedy. Every once in a while something happens that is clearly a big good thing, but they don’t happen often enough to really get you through that daily grind. For instance, my mom recently celebrated her 70th birthday after a year when she had a pretty serious health scare, and celebrating that milestone with her and my family was huge. Being able to see her turn a year older was a great feeling, and feeling like I might lose her was really scary. The day she had her surgery was another big one. Seeing her wake up and smile after everything went well was one of the good moments of the past year that stands out to me the most. These are the moments that make you feel stronger as a person and make you realize how close you are to your family. The little things don’t hit you so powerfully though. Over the course of my 21 day experiment I noticed that things like the smell of a good candle, eating a home cooked meal, and just enjoying a great workout always make me happy, but were the sort of things that I...

Happiness Is a Choice

...object not made for consumption. My daily activities intertwined themselves into one blurred memory. At times, it was tough to decipher reality from the dream world. Was I living in the Matrix? During that period of my life, I would have said yes. Simply put, I wasn’t happy. I was another statistic on a chart in the CEO’s office of a multi-billion dollar industry. I was depressed, or that’s what the doctor labeled me as. My doctor prescribed my to an anti-depressant. I was part of an increasing usage of anti-depressants among young teens. I didn’t care what anybody called it, I just wasn’t happy. Deep down in my heart I wanted to be, but I couldn’t. My perception of everyday happiness was what I would see on television or read about on the internet. I started to question what happiness really was. How do people achieve happiness? What does it mean to be truly happy? Why are some people happier then others? These are questions I wanted answers to! I came across an individual who offered me a few simple words. “The outcome of your day, good or bad, is based on what you choose to focus on. No matter what the situation, you have a choice. You can choose to think positively, and you can choose to think negatively.” I started to live my life by those words from that day forward. After a short period of time and changing my perception on how I chose to look at the world, I started to become happy. I found it easy to get out of bed. My days were becoming more...

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

...PEOPLE ~ BY STEPHEN COVEY THE 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE HABIT 1 : BE PROACTIVE Your life doesn't just "happen." Whether you know it or not, it is carefully designed by you. The choices, after all, are yours. You choose happiness. you choose sadness. you choose decisiveness. You choose ambivalence. You choose success. You choose failure. You choose courage. You choose fear. Just remember that every moment, every situation, provides a new choice. And in doing so, it gives you a perfect opportunity to do things differently to produce more positive results. Habit 1: Be Proactive is about taking responsibility for your life. You can't keep blaming everything on your parents or grandparents. Proactive people recognize that they are "response-able." They don't blame genetics, circumstances, conditions, or conditioning for their behavior. They know they choose their behavior. Reactive people, on the other hand, are often affected by their physical environment. They find external sources to blame for their behavior. If the weather is good, they feel good. If it isn't, it affects their attitude and performance, and they blame the weather. All of these external forces act as stimuli that we respond to. Between the stimulus and the response is your greatest power--you have the freedom to choose your response. One of the most important things you choose is what you say. Your language is a good indicator of how you see yourself. A proactive person uses proactive language--I can, I will...
