In the short story, “The Monkey’s Paw,” the author, W.W. Jacobs, creates a suspenseful mood through his use of foreshadowing throughout the story. The story depicts how the curiosity about the power of an usual object brings unexpected consequences and impacts the characters’ lives forever. For example, Jacobs uses foreshadowing through dialogue when a character states, “The first man had his three wishes...I don’t know what the first two were, but the third was for death” (90-92).
