Journal #1 – Week 1 – Foundations of Interviewing and Counseling

My thoughts on taking a counseling class was very thrilling to me. I know learning about children should be a class I’d be more interested in but personally I am notorious for my “Coffee dates” and deep conversations; I absolutely love to sit down in a relaxing café and catch up with old friends. Over the years I’ve noticed my company really respecting me and considering my thoughts on situations their going through, bad or good. Learning the foundations of interviewing was very eye opening to me. The textbook really clarified that there was a difference between interviewing and counseling. The textbook defines interviewing as the basic process used for gathering data, providing …show more content…
I have been placed in the position of a counselor to many of my friends and still am; I think having a conversation with a considerate and empathetic friend is a lot more acceptable then seeing a counselor in society today. When the picture of the penguins was pulled up and asked “who’s the counselor and the client” I at first saw them walking together, as the class discussed I started seeing it differently, and counseling really is a partnership you help them sometimes or you walk together and in the end they usually help you as the counselor. In the additional reading ‘BABEL” it discussed the four factors contributing to change. The one part that stood out too me was “The immediate result is that therapists spend less time trying to figure out the ‘right’ intervention or practicing the right brand of theory and spend more time doing what they do best: understanding, listening, building relationships, and encouraging clients to find way to help themselves”. Later she decided to go to UofT for law. Just recently we reconnected and she dropped out and said the program wasn’t for her and it was too expensive. Only after class I realized how the five stages of Mircoskills worked. Number one was relationship. Though university gets busy and seeing people gets harder, she still felt like I was someone that was welcoming to talk too, which I am so happy about even with the long breaks in our friendship. Second stage is focusing on the client’s strengths and wellness. I really wanted to make her feel like just because she’s not following the typical cookie cutter life stages as a student, she is still going to accomplish great things, and knowing a 4 year university program wasn’t for her but now a 2 year collage program is a huge step for her. The third step is Goals, we made sure with her year off before starting collage she would make this year a good one, doing things she loves, that she put away like photography. As well asking for a raise at her current job and volunteering her time somewhere meaningful. These goals were made between the both of us. Keeping in mind where she wanted to see in herself in the upcoming year. The fourth step was generating new ways for the clients to see and talk about themselves. And the fifth
