...Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION Rationale Over the decades ago, Seymour Papert (1980) wrote Mindstorms and advocated a revolutionary philosophy in which technology was as seen as a fulfilling two major roles in education: (a) a heuristic role in which the presence of the computer was seen as a catalyst of emerging ideas and (b) an instrumental role in which the presence of the computer would carry ideas into a world larger than the research centres where they were incubated. When the Children’s Machine was published, Papert (1993) looked back over the decade since Mindstorms and asked question, “Why through a period when so much human activity has been revolutionized, have we not seen comparable change in the way we help children learn?” Technology’s exponentially increasing power, decreasing costs, portability and connectivity have gone beyond what it have been started. Yet, inside classrooms across the country, there is such a problem on how technology is being used for the enhancement of reading comprehension. It is not the unavailability particularly of computers but how they are being used in the classroom discussion. In teaching reading, technology is one of the available effective approaches. However, the use of technologies to enhance reading instruction is still its infancy. This reflects that the technological capabilities that are known to have potential in helping children to read, such as computer, have only become sufficiently affordable and available in widespread...

Authorities within supervising universities have realized that strong research by a candidate is often obscured by poor presentation, leading to the paper being ignored by the research community and journal reviewers. On the basis of their academic background, the authors of this paper decided to form a set of clear guidelines for writing research papers and giving oral presentations aimed at helping PhD students. To support the effectiveness of the methodology proposed, a statistical analysis has been conducted. The methodology described in this paper was initially intended for use in the fields of computer engineering; however, it is applicable more widely. In conclusion, if the methodology reported in this paper is followed strictly, it is much less...

...Theories about the relation between flow, habit and addiction Xiao Tan Abstract There’s always a blurry line between flow and addiction while the fine line between habit and addiction is already settled. The new CSI model describe the different roles of Challenge, Skill and Interest in this topic. I am still trying to find a way to add a fourth property to this model which may lead to the generation of a four-dimensional model. 1. The introduction of the new CSI model The new model is based on a fundamental model covered in the material from the lectures: CS model or Flow Chart. The old CS model pointed out a clear area when Challenge and Skill reached a balance spot which is known as “flow area”. Above the “flow” section where Challenge is high and the Skill of individual is low indicates the part that individual gets anxiety and below the “flow” section where Challenge is low and the Skill of individual is high shows the part that individual gets boredom. So here is when an idea came to my mind that there should be a third variable considering this model. Otherwise there should not be anyone who is really excited about doing the work he/she is familiar to, since the Challenge is low and Skill of individual is high. In my point of view, there are a few personalities should be considered. However, what matters more among those characteristics is Personal Interest. Therefore, I am adding the third axis to the original Flow Chart: Interest, which makes the model...

...International Business & Economics Research Journal – August 2009 Volume 8, Number 8 The Franchising Decision: The Perspective Of The Franchisee In The Hospitality Industry Ramon Diaz-Bernardo, Instituto de Empresa Business School, Spain ABSTRACT Franchising is a major trend in the hotel industry. Despite the fact that almost two-thirds of branded hotels in the U.S. are franchised, there is a lack of empirical research on franchising in the hospitality industry. In this article, I reviewed one of the most relevant lines of research in franchising literature, usually referred as creating franchising systems, and we have concentrated on analyzing the reasons and motivations to use franchising from franchisee perspective within the hospitality industry. The paper identifies the main reasons for choosing franchising for franchisees, explores what are the most valued characteristics of franchising, and gives some guidelines on how to make the franchising offer more appealing to potential franchisees in the hotel industry. Keywords: Franchising, Hotels, Franchisor, Franchisee INTRODUCTION A franchise system is a collaboration agreement between two independent business partners, the franchisor and the franchisee, whereby the franchisor allows the franchisee the right to use his brand name, products and services, and specific know-how in exchange for direct or indirect payments to the franchisor by the franchisee. In other words, the franchise system consists of multiple...

...During my research of various hospitals in central Texas, I began to notice the requirement for a basic entry-level nurse was a bachelor’s degree. Hospitals would hire an associate degree nurse on the condition the individual is actively pursuing his/her bachelors degree. There is a push nationwide for the minimum requirement of a bachelor’s degree for all entry-level nurses. How much more professional and effective are the BSN nurses versus ADN or diploma based trained nurses? This leads me to ask the question: Is the use of Baccalaureate Degree Nurses any more effective than the use of Associate Degree Nurses? Professional Values: The Case for RN-BSN Completion Education. (Kubsch, & Hansen, 2008). This study was done to determine if BSN nurses possess greater professionalism than ADN nurses do. The purpose of this research study was to answer two main questions. “Do differences in the perception of professional values exist among practicing RNs? If so, is the difference related to educational background or is it due to other factors?” (Kubsch, & Hansen, 2008). Nurses in hospital settings were interviewed and surveyed. Three programs were looked at. The BSN, associate degree and hospital-based diploma programs. “A total of 590 RN’s who were working at a mid-sized Mid-western hospital and 130 nurses enrolled in an RN-BSN program were invited by e-mail to participate in the study” (Kubsch, & Hansen, 2008). The survey was done solely online. There were a total of 198 surveys completed...

...RESEARCH ARTICLE CRITIQUE Biomedical Science Brief summary The article selected for this paper is “A study into the potential role of Survivin localisation in resistance to drug-induced apoptosis” written by Helen Angell. The paper is about the role of an anti-apoptotic factor from the class of caspases. The subcellular localisation of surviving can play important role in the therapy of breast cancer. Cancer is an abnormal process in which the cellular apoptosis is inhibited. Survivin is a protein known to regulate cell division and apoptosis. Chemotherapy in cancer patients in targeted to induce apoptosis. Surviving has been known to be localised in the cytoplasm and nucleus of the cells. The main therapeutic role of Survivin comes from the fact that the sensitivity of the breast cancer cells to chemotherapy is increased in its presence within the nucleus. Description of the methods and techniques used Various methods have been used by the author. All lab-based methods are used for the determination of localisation and presence of the protein in the cell. • The fourth method used is tissue culture, for the purpose of over expression the protein in the selected cells. • Second method subcellular fractionation was done for the separation of the cellular components. • Immunoblotting was chosen...

...Running head: INCOME DISTRIBUTION IN THE UNITED STATES Income Distribution in the United States and the Lorenz Curve 1 Market economies are favored and well-known for generating macroeconomic growth and progress in industrialized nations, such as the United States. Numerous academic studies and economic research have been done not only to measure economic growth, but also to analyze any disparities in income distributions among the general American population. This paper will examine trends and patterns of American wages since the 1970s, focusing on shifts in income distributions to see if these shifts can be interpreted as income inequality across different sectors of our society. Furthermore, this paper will study two important and interlinked methods of measuring income inequality, which are the Lorenz Curve and the Gini Coefficient Index. The Executive Branch of our federal government and the U.S. Congress keep a close eye on income distributions throughout the entire nation. These bodies rely heavily on data collected and analyzed by non-partisan agencies such as the U.S. Census Bureau, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), and academic institutitions that provide data and statistical analysis to assist in economic and budgetary decisions made by elected officials concerning a wide array of policy issues such as taxes, social insurance programs and other issues that impact the overall economy...

...Analyzing the Research Anne Marie Wouapet Walden University NURS 4000 Section 07, Research and Scholarship for Evidence-based Practice June, 21, 2015 Analyzing the Research Introduction In both the two educational research materials, it is evident that there are two research approaches – the qualitative and the quantitative methods displayed. Researchers who employ these two paradigms of research are considered as either qualitative or quantitative researchers. Studies reveal that these researchers at no instance cross into employing another research method into their work. For instance, a qualitative researcher cannot cross into the confines of the quantitative researchers and vice versa. The rationale behind this is mainly attributed to the fact that both research paradigms have axiological and epistemological assumptions that are considered distinct. This paper, therefore, seeks to identify some research components within a research project, and evaluating the results of these projects by assessing the studies strengths and weaknesses of the study articles, within the qualitative and quantitative paradigms. The two principal articles of this study include; Impact of a smoking cessation educational program on nurses interventions, and the conceptualizations of culture and cultural care among undergraduate nursing students. Overview of Quantitative Article Vandenberg & Kalischuk (2014) in their article titled, “Conceptualizations of culture and cultural care among undergraduate...

...Chapter 2: The Lockdown Rules of the Game Just Say No Supreme Court Sanctions Legal Misrepresentation The Fourth Amendment isn’t the only rule violated in these situations; most of the American civil liberties have been undermined due to the drug war. The Court has allowed the following: War on Drugs tactics #1: Consent Searches Started in 1960’s but rarely used until the 1970’s -primarily for hostage situations, hijackings, and prison escapes Once arrested, one's chances of ever being truly free of the system of control are slim, often to the vanishing point. Tens of thousands of poor people go to jail every year without ever talking to a lawyer. Approximately 80% of criminal defendants are indigent and thus unable to hire a lawyer. People fear police harassment, retaliation, and abuse−especially poor people of color. Those looking for an attorney often find that unless there are broken bones and no criminal record, private attorney would unlikely be interested in the case. Without significant provision over the authority when exercising police discretion, they can arrest Americans for nonviolent drug charges with relative ease. The Supreme Court lets them do it by, and I quote, “eviscerating Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable searches and seizures by the police.” Due to this, people are outright saying that there is a “virtual drug exception” in the Bill of Rights. What this means is that the Supreme Court is creating and abusing a section of the Bill...
