...Fox Venture Partners – Enriching the Private Investor Pool Soubhik Ghosh G12109 Premise of the inception of Fox Venture Partners (FVP): Peter Lawrence and Dianna Frazier formed the Fox Venture Partners planned to form a private equity investment pool. They estimated they would be able to pool $100 million from private equity investors each contributing about 5% to 10% of the total fund value. They plan to invest the accumulated fund of $100 million in to 20 separate investments with $5 million in each investment. Issues and problems faced by FVP Lawrence and Dianna conceptualized the formation of “funds of funds” to garner funds from wealthy families and redirect those funds to invest into Venture Capitalist and private equity firms. They have discussed this idea with a number of Venture capitalist firms as well. These firms supported the concept also. On the other hand, their discussions with potential investors were also fruitful. As investors they selected only the HNIs. Being convinced with the merit of their concept, they set out to raise fund for their endeavor. They sent 172 private placement memorandums to 172 selected families. However, they got a very lukewarm response: 1% of the potential investors showed further interest. They cannot wait longer as it’s been 6 months already since they sent their proposal. Dianna foresees disbursement upto 7 years. Hence they need to hurry in fund raising. So what might be the problem? Analysis: First let’s understand...

...WRITING 101S, KADENA AFB 500 Hedgehog or Fox? Intellectual or the Artistic? Which is better? Fruitful Questions by James Sollisch emphasizes the importance of looking at things and problems more than one way in order to come up with a solution. This essay reminds me of a fable by Isiah Berlin told to me by an old professor of mine. In this fable the fox is a cunning creature, able to devise a myriad of complex strategies for sneak attacks upon the hedgehog. Day in and day out, the fox circles around the hedgehog’s den, waiting for the perfect moment to pounce. Fast, sleek, beautiful, and crafty—the fox looks like the sure winner. The hedgehog, on the other hand, is a dowdier creature, looking like a genetic mix-up between a porcupine and a small armadillo. He waddles along, going about his simple day, searching for lunch and taking care of his home. The fox waits in silence at the juncture in the trail. The hedgehog, minding his own business, wanders right into the path of the fox. The fox thinks he has the sure advantage now. He leaps out, bounding across the ground, lightning fast. The little hedgehog, sensing danger, looks up and thinks, “Here we go again. Will he ever learn?” Rolling up into a perfect little ball, the hedgehog becomes a sphere of sharp spikes, pointing outward in all directions. The fox, bounding toward his prey, sees the hedgehog defense and calls off the attack. Retreating back to the forest, the fox begins to calculate a new line of attack. Each...

...“Cecil Jacobs is a big wet hen!” I heard a familiar voice yell. I stood up from my chair and stumbled over to the window. “Hey!” I heard another familiar voice yell as I looked over the dark lot scanning for my two kids. The lot was completely pitch dark, but I became used to the dark long ago and I could barely make out an outline of what looked like a life-size walking ham. Why would Scout be dressed as a ham? I wondered to myself. I couldn’t see Jem although I knew it was his voice I had heard. I watched as Scout as Jem approached the big oak tree. Once the kids stumbled under the big old tree, I could make out Jem walking along side Scout talking quietly to her. The kids stopped all of the sudden, and I wondered if something was wrong. They shouldn’t be out here at this time of night. Where was Atticus? The Halloween pageant! I remembered the article I read in the weekly edition of the Maycomb tribune. That must be where they were and why Scout wore a ham as her dress. It must of ended late. “Run, Scout! Run! Run!” I heard Jem yell. At that moment I spotted a man with a ripped plaid shirt on, charging at the kids. My kids, I thought. He’s going to try to hurt them. The man wore a smirk of hate and revenge on his face. I couldn’t let them be hurt. They were all I had after years of being shut up in this old run down house because of my unknown sickness. I just couldn’t stay in my house and let the kids be hurt. I had to help. I grabbed what I needed from the kitchen and...

...Earlier this year I decided it was time to get my dog, Ninja, a playmate. Ninja is my mutt that I had gotten from the Humane Society a few years ago; however, I decided I wanted to try something different. I have never had a purebred dog, and I have been wanting a certain one in particular for quite some time. The thought of having a dachshund running around in my house filled me with pure joy. Dachshund had always caught my attention when it came to deciding what pet I wanted. Their irregular shaped bodies, or as Henry Mencken would say, “Dachshunds: A half-a-dog high, and a dog-and-a-half long,” made me fall in love with them even more. Since I have had Buster, I have never really taken to the time to learn where they originated or what his breed was used for. The only knowledge I have of dachshunds are what they look like, their coat and color varieties, the different sizes, and the common health issues associated with them. Though, I guess now I do not really have an excuse as to why I cannot get to know more about my little Buster. The dachshund can be found in historical accounts dating back to the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, when illustrations reflected badgers being hunted with dogs with elongated bodies, short legs and hound-type ears. The dogs of medieval Europe were noted to have the tracking ability of hounds and the proportions and temperament of terriers, much needed to pursue their main quarry of badgers. Dachshund is the German name for “badger dog.” The...

...A Fox’s Tale (Tail) One day a fox was out on a walk, following the same trail that she had once followed when she was just a pup. While walking through the dense woods, it became more and more difficult for her to see where she was stepping. All of a sudden she heard a snap, followed by her own whimpering. Her beautiful tail had been caught in a bear trap. It was only after a tough struggle that she was freed. Although she was no longer trapped, she was still filled with sorrow. Her tail had been cut off and left in the trap. “Oh, how ugly I do indeed look!” Cried the fox, “won’t the other foxes laugh at me?” After racking her brain for quite some time, the fox constructed a plan to prevent being laughed at. Soon after that she called a meeting among her friends and said, “Friends! Have you ever wondered why, after all of the trouble it causes us, we carry these long bushy tails? Let us get rid of them and be free from their nuisance.” To the grief of the fox who was missing her tail, her friends had noticed just that, she was already missing her tail. They laughed aloud and replied, “You used to say that tails looked just fine when your own was okay- and still intact. Now that you’ve lost yours, you want us to lose ours too.” Just as this fox’s friends did, you should always evaluate people's intentions; they may wish to drag you down in order to make themselves feel...

...cold, as it was always this time of year. Autumn's refreshing draft of cool air filled the valley, kissing the river in front of the Husky. The shades of orange, red, and brown around him were typical of course, but there was no harm in hoping these colors would not accompany the fall season this year. The feeling of vibrant energy with dull decay had always struck a chord in his chest. "Is this really necessary Jack?" he shouted further down the river bank, glaring down a red fox pawing softly at the river's current. "Calm down pup, this'll only take a minute if I can just lay a paw on a single fish," Jack shot back quickly with obvious frustration stemming from his voice. His fur was already drenched at his previous attempts, but this did not stray him from his persistence. The Husky had already begun lying down on the bank's shore, paying little attention to Jack's assurance of success. He let out a sigh and licked his front paws. He'll never learn, why does my closest friend have to be the only fox around who can't even catch the smallest of fish? The sound of a splash rang out down the bank. He rolled his eyes knowing this couldn't possibly be the sound of a fish having been caught, but the sound of Jack slipping into the stream. Frustrated at the sound of Jack's obvious failure, he stood to his paws once again, bitter his rest was interrupted so soon. The pack had ordered them to bring back dinner, or risk their own hides in he case of failure. The sun had begun to...

...G is the letter C with an L-shaped end stop. It’s the shape of a device welded onto many bridges to keep the girders from falling and breaking into pieces of concrete and twisted steel. Something shook inside my heart when I saw the handless vet. He crossed the stumps of his arms and cried, “Help me! I’m a vet.” He shivered as the clerks ushered him out of Starbucks on that December night. Then, a man wearing an Airborne cap led him back into the store. He bought the vet coffee and a sandwich. He gave him an old sweat-shirt. As the man in the hat stood guard, a woman approached them. She held her pumpkin latte topped with whipped cream and a drizzle of caramel. “It’s hopeless,” she told the kind man. She’s worked as a social worker in east...

...The Arctic Fox By Rebekah K, Grade 3 Project due, January 23, 2011 The Arctic Fox is a cute ball of white fluff. They are the size of a cat. They have short ears and legs; they have fur on the bottom of their feet, to keep their feet warm when they walk in the snow. Their fur coats are white in the winter months; this helps them blend in with the snow to protect them from their enemies. Brown – grey in the summer months, so then they look like the rocks and plants that grow in the tundra. The fox has a big bushy tail that they use for balance just like a cat. They also use their long bushy tail to keep them warm when they are sleeping. They have cute little faces, with a black nose and pretty brown eyes. They are one of my favorite animals. The Arctic fox lives in some of the coldest places on earth. In Canada they live in the Northwest Territories. Most foxes dig burrows under the ground or in dens. Some of the dens are over 300 years old. Each new generation of foxes will live there. Most of these dens have over a hundred doorways to get in them. If a fox doesn’t have a den they will burrow deep in the snow for shelter or find a cliff ledge. ...

...Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) Marissa N. Webb Biology 101 American Military University Mr. Daniel Pettus Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is the largest of the true foxes. “True foxes” is a nickname for the genus Vulpes. Red foxes are the most geographically spread member of the Carnivora. Red foxes live all around the world in many different diverse habitats including forests, grasslands, mountains, and deserts. They are located across the entire Northern Hemisphere from the Arctic Circle to North Africa, Central America and Asia. I currently live in Virginia Beach, Virginia and red foxes are located throughout the local area. The red fox is found in all areas of Virginia except for the extreme southeast corner. It prefers diverse habitat, in less populated areas, like farmland. You can distinguish a red fox from other similar animals by the following physical characteristics: they are the size of a small dog, a total of 39-41 inches and a weight of 9-12 pounds. They have prominent, erect ears, a pointed nose, and a long, bushy tail with white tip. Their fur is long and soft, with the upper part reddish-yellow, black-tipped on the shoulders. Red foxes are omnivorous. Most of their diet consists of rabbits and mice. They are also known to eat poultry, squirrels, muskrats, quail, small nongame birds, insects, nuts and fruits in smaller amounts. The life cycle of the red fox is as follows: young foxes must...

Synopsis of the Situation The Lennar Company faces the damage caused by the Fraud Discovery Institute’s claims, the financial crisis, mortgage defaults, and dramatic fall in house prices, particularly in some of their active markets. The country is in the midst of an economic recession that began in 2007, and on top of that, the company has been accused of operating a ponzi scheme and profiting while allowing investors to lose money. On the day of the announcement by the Fraud Discovery Institute, the company’s stock price took a dramatic fall. The problem is, the person that founded the Fraud Discovery Institute is a ‘reformed’ crook who has made it his mission to expose fraudulent behavior of others as a way of redeeming himself from some of the negative things he has done. The question is, is he really reformed, or is this just another scheme he has plotted to gain access to company’s information so he can pounce when the company is most vulnerable. Alternative Solutions Since Lennar’s mission statement states...
