English Assignment Creature Creation Unit Project for Frankenstein BRUCE Suliman Mohammad
Diary Entry 1:

Does your creation have any physical or mental shortcomings? Explain.

14-06-1825,1725,
During my experiments, I found the secret to life and death. I found immortality. I stared death right in the eyes and overcame it. I went to the graveyard many times experimenting with cold, rotting corpses. Many times I have failed and lost all hope. But my desire to beat nature and destiny was so overwhelming that I just kept on coming back for more. Every time I came close to bringing the corpses back to the world of the living, I find that the creatures are extremely ugly. Physically, they are imperfect. My latest creation is Bruce. Bruce has been six feet under the dirt for so long that he is in his final stages of decay. His body has bits and pieces of flesh and skin that are just not there. Worms and maggots are all over his body. I found out that Bruce was killed in a street fight. Bruce was not a bad person but he wasn’t exactly a good person either. After bringing him back from his demise, Bruce came out of the chamber with no flesh on his right arm; his left thumb was detached from his hand, he was limping. Bruce was an abomination to God, humanity, and nature. Although he in no way physically perfect, Bruce was smarter than I imagined.

Diary Entry 2:

What physical or intellectual strengths does your creation have? Do they compensate for the shortcomings you mentioned earlier? Explain.

16-06-18251725, Today I was watching Bruce moving about in my lab. I found out that he is like a baby. You need to teach him what to do step by step. Although an abomination, he is truly fascinating. It’s as if he was truly reborn. Bruce’s limping hadn’t improved yet. I think it is something permanent as a side effect of the experiment. With all of his short comings, he is still incredible to me. His left arm, although missing a thumb, still functions normally but with absurd and unimaginable strength; he has to compensate as his right arm is completely useless for him. Furthermore, the mere sight of the arm is nauseating added to the stench of rotting flesh, being around Bruce can be very problematic and exhausting at times. His intellectual ability is unbelievable. To think that his brain was dead a mere two days ago! I can predict that he would be able to speak in about three days or so, with rigorous help and

Diary Entry 3:

Describe how other people respond to your creation. Would your creation have friends? Would he or she feel accepted into society? Why or why not? (Be realistic.)

17-06-18251725,

I’m very concerned about the way the public would act towards Bruce. I acknowledge that he is not a model of physical perfection but Bruce is a miracle of science. I think that if I let him go into the society he would be totally rejected and would become an outcast. Being in a fragile state of mind, what he would do and how he would act in response to rejection is beyond my imagination. Bruce would have an extremely difficult time finding friends because of his physical appearance. As Bruce’s intellect grows by the day, I think he would start experiencing emotions and would inevitably fell self-conscious about his appearance and ultimately he would not feel as an active member or even a member of a society.

Diary Entry 4:

How did your creature’s sense of self develop? What affected his/her self-esteem?

21-06-18251725,

I have been noticing that Bruce is spending more and more time looking after himself. He has been taking better care of the way he dresses and the way he combs his hair. I decided to put mirrors in his chambers. I encouraged Bruce to leave his chambers and come meet me on at the garden. The weather was magnificent. You can hear the birds’ chirps all around you. Wind blowing from the North carrying the fresh scent of orange trees. Bruce was reluctant at first to come out of the house. It was the first time that he sees that part of the estate. I made a list of errands to make sure that the servants would leave the house empty for me and Bruce. As Bruce approached the door the first thing that I noticed was that he had combed his hair and dressed handsomely. The second thing was very obvious to myself was that he was hesitant and afraid to step outside of the house. After placing the mirrors in his chambers, I taught him about what it means to look presentable. I gave him some clothes to wear and a new comb for his hair. I think that his sense of self developed partly as he observed me getting ready to go out of the house or when he observed me scolding the servants about the way they present themselves to the guest of the house. Bruce is still shy with low self of esteem. What affects it is still unknown to me. Further experiments need to be conducted

Diary Entry 5:

Describe your creation’s personality. What kind of self-worth does he or she have? Is your creation shy or outgoing? Is he or she superficial? Does your creation feel unhappy, and if so, whom does he or she blame?

25-06-1825, During the day, as I have noticed, Bruce doesn’t try to leave his chambers although I encouraged him to do so. At the beginning, light used to hurt his eyes but as he got used to the sunlight. It doesn’t any more. I think that he is too shy to go out even form his safe haven, his chambers and the house. I am beginning to question my judgment that made me put mirrors in his chambers. One of the maids startled him by screaming upon her sight of him. Unfortunately he killed the poor girl. I found out that he can feel remorse and retracts from his surrounding upon his feelings. Why Bruce is shy puzzles me. I acknowledge that he is capable of feeling and reacting emotionally with his surrounding but his excessive interaction might be another side-effect of me bringing him back to life. I think he feels extremely unhappy. I am to blame. I should have fixed him. Bruce is still very critical of the way he dresses and the way he combs his hair.

Diary Entry 6:

Describe what your creation does for fun and/or what kinds of hobbies your creation has. Do these activities involve other people?

27-06-18251725,

I came into Bruce’s chambers to day and unexpectedly found him playing with pieces of boards that were lying around the room. He was building something that looked like a structure. Bruce apparently likes to build things. Maybe because of the isolation that I put him in, he is doing things on his own; but he doesn’t have to do everything alone, I am here for him.

Diary Entry 7: How similar is your creation to you? Does it have a soul, feelings, and emotions like you do? Does it deserve respect and to be treated like a human? Why?

29-06-1825,

As the days go by I see more and more of myself in Bruce. Bruce likes neatness and cleanness. I am obsessed with neatness and cleanliness. At the time, Bruce is an only child, and so was I. I can see a drive in Bruce that makes him want to stay alone. He doesn’t like people but he will ultimately realize that he can’t survive in this world without them. I realized this a mere 10 years ago. Bruce is a human being. He deserves every right any other individual receives for the reason that they are human beings. From the time that I have spent from Bruce, I find him more descent and more honest than many other individuals that I have known throughout my life so why should they receive a treatment that is different than his?

Episode in the life of my creature:
1-07-1825,
Today I decided to release Bruce from his captivity. He will be walking alongside me in the town. I am sure that he will frighten everyone in town. When we left the estate, all the servants saw Bruce for the first time. If they didn’t know what happened to the maid that went missing, by now they have known. I gave Bruce my black cloak for him to wear. We departed from the house and head to town, walking. When we were at the town doors, the guards looked like they’ve seen a ghost. Could they have known Bruce from a prior time? We head into the stores and start talking to different people. They weren’t that frightened from Bruce’s appearance after they spoke to him for a few minutes. Today was a big achievement for Bruce and I. I think today will be his birthday; 1-07-1825.

...Frankenstein When a crime is committed, the blame is usually placed on the criminal and this is because a crime cannot take place without a criminal. However, a criminal always has a reason for his actions. Crimes can be prevented if proper precautions are taken. In Marry Shelley’s Frankenstein, a creature is created and given life to, by Victor Frankenstein and it causes several emotional pains to him. Yet the monster is not being solely responsible for them. The creature is born like a fully grown newborn, despite its size; it knows nothing of the world. It can be argued that the creature’s mind is like a “blank slate” and that it only learns to be good or bad from its experiences. Therefore it’s not born good or bad, but learns the bad behavior we see in the novel, from those surrounding him. Frankenstein’s monster was judged by society due to his unusual physical appearance and this caused him to become evil and commit murders to his own creator’s loved ones. The encounters the creature has with people he meets, makes him hate himself over and over again because people react with fear and detest to his disproportioned and twisted appearance. The monster demonstrates the reaction of people in the village when they see him as he states, “some of the people ran away when they saw me [the monster] but the others shouted and threw stones at me. They wanted to kill me.” (Shelley 22). The monster feels judged and mistreated by the people of the village. There was no...

...12AP-2/3-EA8 1003 The so-called creature originated from the “Frankenstein” novel is widely adapted into reality through myriad number of scary movies, fantasy movies. Nevertheless, the transition of the Frankenstein myth is completely and sadly altered as the “being” is turned into a scary and loathsome creature. Even though the Frankenstein’s creation has made various appearances in our contemporary era, the misunderstanding of the creature’s nature and image is terribly misled. Mostly, people are stuck to the image of a vicious, hideous daemon and the famous scene of its being tied up on an electric machine at the top of a dark Gothic tower surrounded by turbulent thunders. That is the image that automatically pops out of everyone’s mind when he or she hears the word “Frankenstein”. Ironically, just a few people do realize that Frankenstein is not the creature’s name, and others just don’t, including so many well-known novelists and writers like Edith Wharton or David Lindsay. Furthermore, the creature is believed widely to be inarticulate, which is understandable as in the movies all that comes out of its mouth is deafening, scary roaring. So what causes all these discrepancies in the original and the contemporary image of the creature made by Frankenstein? It comes from the society where the prejudice on looks exists. Society favors, values good-looking appearances, giving the people possessing those unequal privileges while discriminating those who do not. With its...
