...Society is Not in Control In the article Fat as a Feminist Issue, Susie Orbach writes about the confidence issues women face being women. These issues begin with obesity and end with sex stereotypes. Fifty percent of women in the United Stated alone are considered to be overweight. Orbach states, “Being fat isolates and invalidates a woman” (201). Women believe that the only way to fit the “social norm” is by being skinny. Obesity and overeating in women can be linked to gender roles as well as the roles society’s expectations play. According to Orbach, being fat is a feminist issue. She claims, “Fat is not about lack of self-control or lack of willpower. Fat is about protection, sex, nurturance, strength, boundaries, mothering, substance, assertion, and rage”(201). This is her explanation behind women being fat in the first place. Throughout the article, and more towards the end, she assures us that there is definitely an association between the way society views women and the reasoning for them being overweight. Orbach argues that women try to be “modern” and keep up with all the latest trends and whatnot, therefore causing them stress and then resulting in overeating. After reading this article, I’d say I both disagree and agree with Orbach’s discussion. McCloskey believes that the three proofs (Cosmological, Teleological, and the argument from design) are not a basis for proving God’s existence. McCloskey discharges the proofs by saying in his article, “, theists do not come to believe in God as a result of reflecting on the proofs, but come to religion as a result of other reasons and factors.” (McCloskey, 62). Lincoln may never have known the true impact of his actions or the legacy he left behind but he changed a nation and a world. After reading most of this book and feedback from others would have read much more into the subject I have a different view of the political game that had to be played in order for everything to work out. In the book it takes you step by step into Lincoln’s actions in relation to the civil war being fought. The careful planning and timing of releasing the proclamation at the right moment in the war ensured it be meet with the least resistant’s from the union and have a greater negative effect on the Confederate states. The study initially involved 600 black men, 399 with syphilis, 201 who did not have the disease. The study was conducted without patient knowledge or consent. Researchers told the men they were being treated for "bad blood," a local term used to describe several ailments, including syphilis, anemia, and fatigue. In truth, they did not receive the proper treatment needed to cure their illness. They didn’t even know they were in fact a part of a scientific study. In exchange for taking part in the study, the men received free medical exams, free meals, and burial cost coverage. The study lasted 40 years before it was exposed by the media. In July 1972, an Associated Press reporter published an article about the study, stating: “For 40 years the U.S. Public Health Service has conducted a study in which human guinea pigs, denied proper medical treatment, have died of syphilis and its side effects. The Study was conducted to determine from autopsies what the disease does to the human body.” Public outcry was immediate and the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare launched an investigation.
