...Pak. J. Weed Sci. Res. 17(1): 51-63, 2011. EFFECTS OF WEED CROP COMPETITION PERIOD ON WEEDS AND YIELD AND YIELD COMPONENTS OF SESAME (Sesamum indicum L.) Zubair1Ijlal1, Asif Tanveer1, Muhammad Ehsan Safdar2, Ahsan Aziz2, Muhammad Ashraf2, Naeem Akhtar2, Farhan A. Atif2, Asghar Ali2 and Muhammad Mudassar Maqbool3 ABSTRACT Farmers’ efforts to control Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) weeds provide low economic returns as the information regarding critical weedcrop competition period is lacking. We investigated the critical weed-crop competition period in sesame at the Agronomic Research Area, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad Pakistan during summer season (July-November) 2005. Treatments were weed-crop competition periods (WCCP) of 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 weeks after emergence in addition to full season competition and full season weedy check as negative and positive controls, respectively. A gradual decrease from 6.88 to 12.40 % in seed yield was recorded with 6 weeks to full season weed-crop competition. Non significant reduction in seed yield was observed up to 5 weeks WCCP. Weed crop competition for a period of 3 weeks did not show significant decrease in straw yield, number of capsules plant-1, number of seeds capsule-1 and 1000 seed weight, whereas a significant decline in all these parameters was noted as WCCP exceeded 3 weeks. Weed density and dry weight did not increase significantly until WCCP was prolonged up to 3 and 4 weeks, respectively. This study led to conclude that...

...Identity by Julio Noboa Polanco is a free verse poem that is made up of 5 stanzas. The theme of the poem is identity and the poet compares a flower to a weed saying that sometimes it’s better to take a risk in life and be different to everyone else rather than being rooted to the ground and stuck in the same place. The poem has a strong and defiant tone, as seen in ‘Let them be flowers,” and “I’d rather” and the poet appears to be very confident with his decision. It is written in a positive tone as the poet is celebrating his individuality and happy about his choice. The poem mainly consists of metaphors, as the poet is referring to himself as a weed as seen in most of the poem: “I'd rather be a tall, ugly weed, clinging on cliffs, like an eagle wind-wavering above high, jagged rocks.” He has also amended to using the form of an actual weed and flower. An example is “Let them be as flowers, always watered, fed, guarded, admired, but harnessed to a pot of dirt.” The flower is representing everyone else, admired, popular and pretty but trapped while the weed as shown in “I'd rather be unseen, and if then shunned by everyone, than to be a pleasant-smelling flower,” is representing the poet who would rather follow his own path than be like everyone else. There is also a very clever use of personification by the poet as he gives the weed and flowers human like qualities as seen in “If I could stand alone, strong and free, I'd rather be a tall, ugly weed” The poet also uses contrasting...

...The Problem Of Evil There are many events throughout the world that occur, that we cannot explain. The evils that exist are moral and non-moral evils. The moral evils that exist are poverty, oppression, persecution, war and injustice. The non-moral evils that occur frequently but not usually on a daily basis are earthquakes, hurricanes, storms, flood, drought, and blight (philosophy. Lander.edu/intro/hick.stml). These evils happen with thousands of people dying daily for no reason. The problem of evil is a touchstone of any religion. The direct confrontation with evil results in suffering, and thus endless questions about the meaning of life. That is why all religions have to give a proper answer regarding the origin, nature and end of evil (www.comparativreligion.com/evil.html). Many people think these occurrences are evil and why does God allow them to happen. To believe in God is difficult because of all of the evil that he allows. This is because many evils (for example, the suffering of children) seem to serve no justifiable purpose. Therefore, these kinds of evils count against the existence of God. These evils are called gratuitous (or pointless) evils. (http://www.equip.org/articles/addressing-the-problem-of-evil-). The pointless evils that exist show that God may not exist. The different religions of the world justify that a God does exist. Many religions of the world believe that you cannot have good without evil because it helps to keep things balanced...

The process of organic farming has been brought in to use to preserve water & soil & also to reduce the pollution that can be caused because of faming. Organic farming does not involve any of the conventional farming methods to keep away from the diseases that can occur in the livestock & to control pests in the vegetable or fruit farming & for that matter even fertilizer. Organic farming puts in to use the natural methods to keep away from any harm to the farming. The organic farming differs from the conventional farming in a lot of ways. In conventional farming, synthetic chemicals are made use of to increase the growth of cultivation. However, in organic farming it is preferable to make use of organic wastes & compost in the kind of fertilizers, which may finish up in increasing the nutrients supplied to the plants. To get rid of weeds, conventional farming methods make use of herbicides. On the other hand, organic farming would prefer going in for rotation of the crops that would prevent the particular weed from destroying a plant. Also, organic farmers would prefer going in for hand picking of the weeds or tilling to...

...Another idea conveyed by Tan is how you often need to embrace yourself and your mind, to let them free. Rose realizes she is going to have to force herself to accomplish the daunting task of decision making, rather unwillingly, during and after her divorce with Ted. While Ted was out of the house, the garden in front of the house that he had put countless hours into, and loved with an intense passion, became overgrown with weeds and looked extremely disheveled. During their marriage, Ted made all of the decisions for the couple; he often didn’t even let Rose answer the questions he asked her, as he just answered them himself. Not only does Ted just answer his own questions, but he also doesn't even ask the questions. This allows Rose to nestle...

And how did I end up with this ? Simple, I smoke weed or Marijuana, I started to smoke weed when I was in my second year of college at a certain school, a friend of mine introduced marijuana to me and because of curiosity i tried it. At first joint, I didn't felt anything but when i took the second puff my head felt heavy and my eyes are started to turn red and i began to imagining things like birds flying in the sky laughing out loud with the people whom they drop their poop, I also became observant about my surroundings thinking why the leafs of that tree is so green and the other is yellow and we laughed with nothing in particular. But what is marijuana ? Marijuana is a medical herb plant or also known as Cannabis Sativa in scientific name. Some people often said that Marijuana is addictive, YES of course it is. ...Smoking weed every day is not cool. It’s not healthy, it’s not wise- it’s illegal. All good reasons why you shouldn’t spark up, right? Wrong. As a young adult, it’s hard to not give into some of the pressures that you’re faced with everyday, especially throughout high school. I was originally introduced to weed as marijuana, and how evil it was. Not only would my mother preach about how bad it was, but the school system shoved it into our heads as well. Marijuana is a “gateway drug”. Might as well say, “if you smoke it, you will die”. Wrong- false advertisement- stop there. There’s no way something that “god created” should be illegal, or cause you harm. It’s just a plant! Boyfriend one: 18, stoner, fluent drug user, and drinker (what a great pick). The first guy to ever ask me to smoke with him. I barely knew anything about weed or what it does, how it feels, or even how to smoke it. I felt like the most ignorant, and immature person in my boyfriend’s life, but that never changed my opinion on how I felt about the matter. Weed was still evil and I was still immature, oh well. I tried to get him to stop, which really did nothing. And on top of that, I was trying to talk him out of doing and experimenting with all the drugs he was trying, which was much more difficult. Every weekend him and his friends would call me telling me what drug they were taking that day. Whether it be ecstasy, acid, MDMA, or xanax, they were always on something. My ex was never sober and no matter...

...English 1B 16 February 2016 Legalizing Recreational Pot Heavy marijuana smokers are at risk for some of the same health effects as cigarette smokers, like bronchitis and other respiratory illnesses. Marijuana is the most commonly abused illegal drug in the United States and around the world. Those who support its legalization, for medical or for recreational use, fail to recognize that the greatest costs of marijuana are not related to its prohibition; they are the costs resulting from marijuana use itself. If the United States were to legalize marijuana, the number of users would increase. New users would not be limited to adults if marijuana was legalized, as regulations on alcohol and tobacco does not prevent use by youth. The legalization of recreational pot in America will increase the number of drug users at a younger age nationwide because many youth are more susceptible to peer pressure, the curiosity and sensation of what other drugs will feel like will grow causing more people to try and become addicted to other types of drugs, and finally because the recreational use of drugs will become a social norm instead of a taboo. The legalization of recreational pot in America will increase the number of drug users throughout the country as well as increase the number of younger users. There is a possibility that since this drug would be legalized, there would be easier access to it. Since access to marijuana would be extremely easy with stores selling it in shelves, more...

... Case Title : The Parable of the Green Lawn Case number : Case 1 A new housing development has lots of packed earth and weeds, but no grass. Two neighbors make a wager on who will be the first to have a lush lawn. Mr. Fast N. Furious knows that a lawn will not grow without grass seed, so he immediately buys the most expensive seed he can find because everyone knows that quality improves with price. Besides, he will recover the cost of the seed through his wager. Next, he stands knee deep in his weeds and tosses to seed around his yard. Confident that he has a headstart on his neighbor, who is not making much visible progress, he begins his next project. Ms. Slo N. Steady, having grown up in the country, proceeds to clear the lot, till the soil, and even alter the slope of the terrain to provide better drainage. She checks the soil’s pH, applies weed killer and fertilizer, and then distributes the grass seed evenly with a spreader. She applies a mulch cover and waters the lawn appropriately. She finishes several days after her neighbor, who asks if she would like to concede defeat. After all, he does have some blades of grass poking up already. Mr. Furious is encouraged by the few clumps of grass that sprout. While these small, green islands are better developed than Ms. Steady’s fledgling lawn, they are surrounded by bare spots and weeds. If he maintains these footholds, he reasons, they should spread to the rest of the yard. He notices that his neighbor’s lawn is...

...to uproot the metaphorical weeds. Hamlet’s use of rot imagery manifests his dissatisfaction with life and inability to vie for his throne. The pattern of deception imagery delineates how Hamlet’s impotence to avenge his father’s death furthers the deterioration of his life. Image patterns used by Hamlet demonstrate his nobility and that his desires are incongruous with his reality. As Hamlet depicts the flaw in Denmark’s monarchy through the use of unweeded garden imagery, his ethics and consequent disillusionment emerge. Prior to Claudius’ usurping of power through murder and incest, Hamlet’s nobility resides in him being the immediate heir to the throne. "’tis an unweeded garden, / That grows to seed; things rank and gross in nature / Possess it merely" (Shakespeare, I.ii.6). Hamlet accurately portrays the flaw in Denmark’s monarchy: incest. As a weed destroys a garden by spreading rapidly and impeding the penetration of sunlight onto the beautiful plants, Claudius, the biggest “weed” of all, impedes the instillment of morality in his inferiors and encourages evil. Disgusted by Claudius’ duplicitous antics and Denmark’s subsequent political turmoil, Hamlet yearns for the perfect world: one in which all that is around him is in perfect harmony as it was when his father was alive and he can hear the music of the spheres. Hamlet is emotionally affected by the disruption of the natural order and warns his mother: “do not spread the compost on the weeds” (III.iv.151). Similar to...

...Unit 5 IP: Theories of Crime Causation American InterContinental University Virgen Ramos Abstract This essay will cover four main theories: the social control theory, the neutralization theory, the labeling theory, and the routine activities theory. These four theories will then be compared to the following four programs: the Midnight Basketball League programs, the Weed and Seed programs, the Graffiti Reduction program, and the Prison Rehabilitation program. They will each be discussed and described thoroughly with the use of examples. Overall, this essay will cover how the public is trying to decrease crime rates. Unit 5 IP: Theories of Crime Causation In this large world, we have large amounts of crime rates. These high crime rates lead to the creations of specific theories. These theories lead to the makings of specific programs. These specific programs all have to do with a theory. This theory is what gives the public the idea to form a program to try to see if it will help. Discussed in this essay will be many different theories and which programs go along with them. The first theory to be introduced in this essay is Hirschi’s social control theory. “Hirschi’s social control theory proposes that delinquents fail to form or maintain a bond to society consisting of attachment, commitment, involvement, and belief” (Wiatrowski, 1981, p. 525). In other words, his theory is that if people are not involved in something they enjoy doing, something they look forward...
