Future Emergencies
This short story was written in 2002, a year after 9/11. So the setting is the post 9/11 America contributing the sense of uncertainty and insecurity of America’s future and the fear of changes in American people’s lives.
The female narrator She isn’t given a name, probably she’s used to represent ordinary Americans whose pleasant, enjoyable lives have been afflicted by 9/11 attacks, becoming frightened, anxious and longing for their past ways of life. Before the incident, she says she have always dated many men, then she meets Victor who is older, strong, intellectual and she knows that she can rely on his permanent shape. She finds Victor’s dark humor about the medieval age, or his love of penal things and conflicts charming, she’s still a kid. Their particular relationship allows her to be a naïve, uncorrupted girl and what’s so funny is when Victor writes on her essay “See me,” and they have sex in his office. These sound like a common love story, pretty naughty and funny; a young college student girl and her professor having an affair in the university. But her life and her thought after the 9/11 are changed. She says that they haven’t had sex and haven’t taken a walk together for a long time; their lives are less sexual and sweet. Then she’s attached by Paul, or specifically, his long elegant fingers which make her think that he may be a cellist. There comes the image of sexuality, the cello looks like a woman curve and he plays on that body. It tells us that she desperately wants to go back to the life she’s used to, free, exciting life. She doesn’t find Victor’s black humor of violent conflicts charming anymore, his taste becomes disgusting for her because when terror manifests in reality, it’s totally not funny. Maybe it explains why she wants to leave him. Moreover, she feels uneasy with the photograph of the old woman in a wheelchair

The Future of Emergency Management

...The Future of Emergency Management Jeffrey C. Jones Case Studies in Natural and Man Made Disasters Professor Charles Kocher July 16, 2012 Abstract Emergency managers have historically been just that, managers of emergency situations. As the field of emergency management changes, more and more emphasis is being placed on the prevention of the emergency all together. This paper will lay out the frame work of emergency management in terms of total reorganization. The current model although tweaked many times is still response heavy, the new model will be more prevention and mitigation based, as will call for the total overhaul of conventional emergency management. Introduction The American public as an expectation that be it private or government on any level professional responders and emergency managers should be capable of handling any and all types of emergencies. They have an expectation be it fair or not that these responders should execute these responses without error. This expectation is only further fueled by popular television programs that depict stoic emergency managers that handle the large events everyday. In addition to emergency managers the same could be said about military commanders, and political leaders. The odd coincidence is that this was also the key duty that emergency managers have always focused on. The thought was that if a manager handles the call or...

The Future of Emergency Medical System: Public or Private?

...The Future of Emergency Medical System: Public or Private? The people in every community across the country rely on a system that few are actually aware of and that most hope to never use. It’s activated during medical and trauma emergencies, responding on scene to provide life saving interventions and rapid transport to health care facilities. This is the emergency medical system (EMS). EMS is a relatively young industry having only formally been around since the 1970s when congress passed the EMS Systems Act of 1973(Shah). At the time, pre-hospital care was either non-existent, operated by the local hospital system, or run by a group of volunteers (Shah). The industry has come a long way since its creation and is ever evolving. As it became apparent that this could be a moneymaking field, many private companies entered the industry, taking over care from hospital systems and providing quality care to a city’s residents through multi-year contracts of service. Another industry undergoing changes in tangent with private EMS is city funded Fire & Rescue services, an industry with very high operation and labor costs. Statistically, there are fewer fires each year with slightly over 1 million structural fires in the US in 1977, there were only 484,500 in 2011, a drop of over 50% (NFPA, see appendix for graph), yet a city cannot just release its firefighters. In order to justify the expense of keeping firefighters on the payroll, many cities across the country have implemented...

Before entering students should know the proper rules and procedures ahead of time in case of an emergency. Which means procedures and rules should be practiced at least once a week for a month or until there is no need for assistance. Staff should be fully trained and well equipped given an emergency during any time. Even if no assistance is needed supervision is always required, as well as supplies, materials, and equipment at hand or is known to be in a close range. To keep everyone healthy indoors and outdoors, I make sure sanitary procedures are stated and present. When entering or exiting an area students, staff, and classroom equipment should be well sanitized daily. For example hand washing before and after eating along with when children are playing indoors and outdoors. Staff should sanitize before and after dealing with each child to prevent the transferring of germs. Rest and nutrition are also a very important role in a child’s everyday life. Students should be immediately tended to when dealing with allergy emergencies no matter how severe. Naps are required in a child care center, children should have a chance to rest during the day specifically children ages new born to five. To ensure I create an active learning environment indoors and outdoors, I keep activities active and very communicative. I like for the kids...

Reducing Panic in Fire Response

...interesting to know that the dress code instills some form of confidence to fire victims. When these victims see a firefighter in full fire combat, they feel at ease and adhere strictly to the orders they are given. A firefighter should, therefore, ensure that they are in their uniform when responding to such scenarios. Further, delays and bulky procedures tend to increase panic among the victims. There should be an easy procedure that will allow the evacuation of victims as fast as possible especially to the crowded places. Movements should be controlled to ease the overcrowding and possibly reduce the number of casualties. Firefighters should also provide emergency lighting facilities as in most instances fire emergencies cause blackouts, and if victims were left out in the darkness, they are likely to panic even more. Providing emergency lights allows victims to trace their easiest way out of the building. The exits should be well labelled to avoid directing the evacuees to risk areas that would subject them to more danger. References Freedman, M. (2015). Fighting Fire in the Sierra National Forest. Fire Department

...Before joining the Fire Department, I didn’t have a clue as to what it entailed. I knew that committing to the department wasn’t going to be casual; still I was surprised as to how much it demanded from me. In order to learn how to act during emergency situations, there were monthly company drills (training exercises) that we were required to attend. Sometimes the training was very intense, although they were highly controlled, it was always dangerous. A common exercise was entering a multi-storied building with fires at various locations, which we had to find and put out. The drill was highly teamwork oriented and required concise communication in making our way around. Other drills ranged from practicing force-entry into buildings to getting into full turnout gear with an SCBA ready to use. We had even purchased a junkyard car to set on fire in order to practice putting out car fires. Many of the fire related calls were minor or false alarms. Although there were some actual fire crises, many of the emergencies were medical. Some people are surprised to find out that the local fire department runs many of the ambulances. Some calls I responded to were: overdoses, heart attacks, and the elderly falling in their home. Usually an EMT on scene would check the patient and decide whether or not they needed hospitalization. If they did need medical attention, we would get them on the stretcher and bring them to the local hospital. I’d say being a volunteer at the CPFD had...

...Its better to save money for future Some people like to live a lavish life style, and some don’t. When it comes to spending money majority usually don't think about the future. They just want to spend all their money as soon as they have earned. One reason is retirement. Although I believe if one spend all money living a good life, by driving an expensive car, and living in a big house, you won’t have saving that means you will have difficulty in the future. For instance, my grandpa always taught us to save money. He said whatever I earned at least take a one dollar out each day and by the time the month ends I will have thirty dollars in my pocket without realizing. My grandpa has passed away, but he had seven children and none of them took care of him. I realized that if he hadn’t had savings he would not have enjoyed his retirement. He was very happy despite not having support of his children. For example, he used to go for a vacation every summer with my grandma. That is all because of his hard work since he save all his life instead of spent all money. The second reason is emergencies. No one knows what will happen next. We should have our savings in case of an emergency. One of my friend is like super advance. She drives an expensive car, always wears very expensive clothes like "Armani" and used to eat out at high class restaurants. I believe that she like to live a very lavish life and spend all of her salary on herself. For example, just the other day I was...
