“The Miracle Worker”

At first someone asked us, “How does a person identify that a certain thing is color red nor that person can’t see and can’t hear?” I shocked out and left me thinking how that person knows that. So my professor let us watched a film titled, “The Miracle Worker”. The film implies a child who has that kind of disability. My first impression, I was a little amazed and sad. Amazed because even though she has that kind of sickness, she used her other senses just to identify that kind of object. Example: When she touches her eyes, nose and mouth then she hold her doll, (she knows that object is like a human) she noticed that the parts of that certain doll is incomplete so that’s why she looked for an object that can be used as an eye of her doll. I was also sad because I know that she will grow up without knowing visually how beauty and wonderful does our nature have. So when the movie goes by, I was annoyed to his dad because he is keep telling to his wife that she has no hope. But Kate (mother of Helen) pleased him because she do believe that she still have chances to act normal even her sickness is permanent. Until they met a woman named Annie. She taught Helen how to grow up normal and how to communicate to other people even she has a disability. She said that even though she have no senses of sight and hear, she still have other senses like sense of touch, smell and taste. On that way, she still may identify that kind of an object and can still act like a normal child. I was amazed with that woman because of her patience and perseverance. She uses sign languages just to name those objects that they are using. How? When she arrived from the house of Kepler’s Family, she walked by stamping her feet just to make a vibration so she may feel that someone is coming. When they reached on a room with Annie and Helen, she let her to open her baggage and poke her things. The first thing that Helen got was a doll. When she got that doll, she suddenly holds her hand and spell out using the sign languages just to name/identify that this thing that she’s holding is a doll. Next is the cake. She let her to taste it and hold her hand again just to tell her that she’s eating a cake. Again, I was amazed because I just realized that on that way, she may learn things that may surround her.
So while she’s teaching Helen, Helen was so naughty because of her young age and her mannerism (she grew up by letting her go and every time she’s getting wild her mom will take her a medicine just to make her calm). So Annie decided to stay on a place with Helen without her parents so she may train her well. I was surprise because she’s a bright a woman. You can see how she pursue just to teach Helen how to be a polite person. But Helen’s father doesn’t trust her so she only gave 3 weeks just to teach Helen. Annie taught her how to eat properly. She also taught Helen how to remove her mannerism and to be a polite person. At first it left me thinking how she can do that but when the story goes, I was suddenly amazed. She even let her to go outside and go to the garden and river just to feel the environment and let her to feel free. I can see that the child is having a great time and it shows that she looks like she doesn’t have disability. Within those days that she taught, I felt her sincerity and love to that child. Because of that, she became a great teacher of hers.
At the end of the story, my tears appeared because of the perseverance of Annie. Helen became a polite person. She evenly returned the key that she hide when she locked the door of Annie’s room.
Generally, the film is not only a film that we normally watch yet, it teach us a lesson. A lesson that disability is not a barrier for you to pursue what you want. You can still be complete even you are born to be incomplete.

“Front of the Class”

It all started when someone asked us, “What is Tourette syndrome?” The question makes the crowd suddenly quiet. It left us thinking what does it mean. So he let us to watched a film titled, “Front of the Class”. This is a true to life story. The story tells a guy who grew up with this syndrome. This syndrome is characterized by involuntary tics and vocalizations and often the compulsive utterance of obscenities. The name of the guy is “Brad Cohen”. He got this syndrome since he was young.
At first it makes me laugh because of his movements but when I think about it, I was suddenly cast down and pity on him. I just realized that it is hard to have that kind of syndrome. It even discriminate him either. And I was more pity when his father doesn’t believe on him that he have that kind of syndrome nor he don’t even know that kind of syndrome. Because for his vision, he just need to control himself. For him, he just need an attention. And also because of his disability, he received a lot of bullies of his. He even always punishing by his teacher because they thought he has no good manners. Until when he reached to principal’s office. I was suddenly caught on the hop because at last someone already understand him (including his mom). Like normal people, he has his own goals and vision. He wants to be a teacher. He looked for a job but when it comes to interview, he’s always failed. And until now, he’s dad is keep discriminating him. It’s good that her mom is not. She used to cheer out his son since he was young. Because of that, he doesn’t lose hope. Until he was able to find a job. The teachers were amazed because he explained that disability is not a barrier to get your goals. I was amazed because of his braveness and perseverance. Because of his braveness and a good heart person, he met a girl named, “Nancy”. She fall in love to a person who has this kind of syndrome. For them, this is not also a barrier for you to fall in love. It is being who and what you are. I was amazed with his talent and passion when it comes in teaching. Because of his passion, he proved to his co-teachers and principal that he can act and teach normal. He either makes his students to be happy. Because of his achievement, his dad was suddenly wake up and realized that he is right. He was evenly proud to his son.
At the end of this film, I realized that disability is not a barrier for you to achieve your goals and visions to your life. It is up to you if you will let your discrimination dominant. Everything has hope. God is always there to guide you. Let us put to our minds the positiveness and faith to our almighty God. Just always aim high.

Procrastination

...Psychological Bulletin 2007, Vol. 133, No. 1, 65–94 Copyright 2007 by the American Psychological Association 0033-2909/07/$12.00 DOI: 10.1037/0033-2909.133.1.65 The Nature of Procrastination: A Meta-Analytic and Theoretical Review of Quintessential Self-Regulatory Failure Piers Steel University of Calgary Procrastination is a prevalent and pernicious form of self-regulatory failure that is not entirely understood. Hence, the relevant conceptual, theoretical, and empirical work is reviewed, drawing upon correlational, experimental, and qualitative findings. A meta-analysis of procrastination’s possible causes and effects, based on 691 correlations, reveals that neuroticism, rebelliousness, and sensation seeking show only a weak connection. Strong and consistent predictors of procrastination were task aversiveness, task delay, selfefficacy, and impulsiveness, as well as conscientiousness and its facets of self-control, distractibility, organization, and achievement motivation. These effects prove consistent with temporal motivation theory, an integrative hybrid of expectancy theory and hyperbolic discounting. Continued research into procrastination should not be delayed, especially because its prevalence appears to be growing. Keywords: procrastination, irrational delay, pathological decision making, meta-analysis Procrastination is extremely prevalent. Although virtually all of us have at least dallied with dallying, some have made it a way of life. Estimates indicate...
