It is a refinement of an earlier simulation, Appleton-Baker. Overview The Parkers and Gibsons are neighbors. A vacant parcel of land, now owned by the Parkers, sits between their two house lots. The vacant parcel is smaller than the minimum required by zoning for a building lot, but potentially has value to abutters for "accessory uses" or simply as a buffer. The Parkers bought the land 15 years ago for $20,000 thinking that they might build a tennis court on it, but never went ahead with this project. The Parkers recently sold their house, but the purchasers are not very interested in buying the extra land. As a result, the Parkers have approached the Gibsons to see if they would like to acquire the parcel. As it happens, there is a large bargaining range in this case. The Parkers are moving out of state and will reluctantly sell the land for $15,000 to the purchaser of their home if the Gibsons aren't interested in buying the lot. Unbeknownst to the sellers, the Gibsons are very interested in purchasing the land to expand their house. They recently received an inheritance...

...Introduction Gibson Insurance Company is faced with a challenge that is critical to the long-run sustainability of the company: how to use costing systems to operate more efficiently. With the growing size of the company in the recent years, the current cost allocation system is no longer suitable to provide vital information for the management in making pricing decisions, compensating employees, and managing costs. Therefore, it is essential that a new cost allocation system must be implemented to better measure the costs and gain insights to guide managerial decisions which can affect the organization’s efficiency. By evaluating Gibson’s current business practices and product lines, the report will identify issues and provide a rationale to utilize a new cost allocation system in order to increase efficiency and profitability. Company Background Gibson Insurance sells two different types of financial products: annuities and life insurance. Annuities are typically financial contracts that offer a re-occurring payment plan. Annuities consist of tax-deferred investments; this means that investors can place their pre-tax dollar income into various financial tools in order to decrease their income. The main goal of tax-deferred investments is to lower an individual’s income for an overall tax savings. Another product is a life insurance in which the policy holders contribute a certain amount of money per year in order to pay a lump sum to any benefactors if the policy holder...

...Young 1 Whitney Young Troy University Oct 3, 2014 Young 2 The Academy Award winner Mel Columcille Gerard Gibson also known as Mel Gibson, father of 8, has had many accomplishments. He played the lead role in the movie Braveheart, directed Passion of the Christ, and recently starred in a the box office hit, Expendables 3. He has had a lot of highs and lows of his career and has done everything from winning multiple awards to receiving DUI's followed by public outbursts. You did not hear much about him being a “bad boy” during the 80's or 90's, but in the last 15 years his behavior has gotten progressively worse. What could have caused this Oscar winner to have so many issues? [Gibson, 2014]. During a documentary, Mel Gibson announced that he was bipolar. He said, “I had really good highs, but some very low lows. I found out recently I'm manic depressive”. [ABC News, Marikar]. Mel Gibson has been accused of being a homophobic, racist, and misogynistic pig. While fans and critics may blame his behavior on substance abuse or accuse him of being a megalomaniac, he has been diagnosed with bipolar I disorder. The difference between bipolar I and bipolar II disorder is mania which Gibson suffers from. Mania is only found in bipolar I disorder. (Comer, p. 245). During his arrest for his DUI, he made remarks about Jews being responsible for all the wars in the world. He then came back and apologized...

...Rosencrantz and Guildernstern bring in the players, Hamlet decides to let the players play the Old King’s murder. Scene 2 is divided into sub-sections in a way to present the plot and the theme more clearly. The “fishmonger scene” refers to the part from Polonius’s explanation of Hamlet’s madness “Your noble son is mad” (2.2.92) to the end of Hamlet and Polonius’s first interaction “except my life” (2.2.210), initiates Hamlet’s actions on revenge and vouchsafes how other characters view his “madness”. This essay will compare the actors’ gestures and line arrangements from directors Kenneth Branagh and Franco Zeffirelli to depict the different effects in Hamlet’s madness. First, the actors’ gestures between Kenneth Branagh version and Mel Gibson version show differences to the interpretations of Hamlet’s madness. There are not many gestures in the Kenneth Branagh film, which can mean something. When Polonius talks to Claudius and Gertrude, also when he talks to Hamlet, he does not have obvious big body movement, but instead just standing straight, walking steadily, behaving perfectly like a honorable and educated man; Hamlet as the noble son of the King and Queen, and the respectable prince of Denmark, however, has many big and dramatic gestures while responding to Polonius’s questions. Here, regardless of our general impression about Polonius being too verbose and distracting, he in fact seems very much like a reasonable man. This remark does make total sense of why Claudius and...

...ABSTRACT Gibson Insurance Company (GIC) faces a challenge during the current year. GIC’s current cost allocation system must be revised to accommodate the implementation of a new management planning and performance management system. The goal is to better allocate GIC’s corporate support-service costs to the business lines and business units in a result of more precise pricing strategies, sales compensation and improved cost control. We have analyzed GIC’s situation based on the given information, and concluded with a solution to improve the old cost allocation system. The new cost allocation uses adjusted cost bases which better reflects to the actual usage for new and existing policies. More support-service costs are assigned to new policies than existing ones as it requires more resources for implementation. We have also provided recommendations to improve the new allocation approach. We suggested that GIC use step method and revised allocation bases to effectively control costs, measure performance and reflect actual costs. INTRODUCTION GIC is an insurance company that offers two different kinds of financial products: annuities and life insurance. It has full ownership of two subsidiary companies: Compton Insurance Services and Midwest Mutual Insurance Company. Compton and Midwest both sell annuities and life insurance; however, the pricing strategies and the features of these products differ between the companies. Although its subsidiary companies are presented...

...No, we will run, and we will live. William Wallace: Aye, fight and you may die, run, and you'll live... at least a while. And dying in your beds, many years from now, would you be willing to trade ALL the days, from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take... OUR FREEDOM! “ -William Wallace One of the most well-known monologues in movie history is William Wallace’s speech before the Battle of Stirling. It shows why he is such an inspiring leader. It also contains just enough humor and seriousness to be taken to heart. This must be the reason for the name behind it all: Braveheart, perhaps Mel Gibson’s finest film. Mel Gibson is the star and director of Braveheart. He has also produced many movies. Braveheart won two Oscars for best director and best picture. It also won a Golden Globe for best director. The movie is based on an epic poem written by a man known as Blind Harry in 1722. The setting takes place in the 13th century when the country of Scotland was under the malicious rule of King Edward I of England. It revolves around a man and...

...Linda Braly English 2342-S70 Dr. William Brannon April 20, 2012 “Neuromancer” – Journal #5 While reading “Neuromancer”, it is hard not to compare the characters journey through “cyberspace” to our current day “cyberspace”. Obviously, Gibson was well ahead of his time when he created this novel. Case was subjected to large amounts of “ICE” and touring agents that were employed to prevent IA’s from getting too large. The fact that the author required Case to get through so many layers in order to achieve their mission, made it is obvious that author placed great importance on the need to maintain control of the information and prohibit access to unauthorized users that was floating around “cyberspace”. This can be compared to our current technology. We place an exorbitant amount of personal information into “cyberspace”, potentially allowing ourselves the chance to have our identities and our money stolen. Cyber-criminals must still go through layers before they can penetrate our information, but as we all know it is possible. Much like in “Neuromancer”, they had touring agents and massive amount of ICE to try and protect their information, in the end it did not matter. We must rely on virus applications and hopefully a dash of common sense to keep our information from landing in the hands of people like Case. However, with the ease of shopping, banking, and bill pay on-line, it is obvious that we are more concerned with convenience than we are with identity theft. I guess that...

...When one thinks of great movies, Australian cinema is not usually the first thing that comes to mind. However, this is not to say that it has gone completely unnoticed. Australian cinema has been a sort of boom and bust industry since its inception in the late 1800’s. When it is booming, it can be one of the most successful film industries in the world. Nonetheless, when it is down, it can be so unproductive as to only produce a few movies in a decade. After several previous attempts to solve the slump of the film industry, the Australian government created the Australian Film Commission (AFC) in 1975. The AFC was a used to help the film industry by providing government funding to Australian filmmakers to facilitate the production of internationally competitive films. This made it much easier to screen Australian films across the globe for an international audience. Upon its inception, the effects of the AFC were seen almost immediately with the release of Peter Weir’s Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) as well as Ken Hannam’s Sunday to Far Away (1975), two of the first internationally successful Australian films. According to Film History: An Introduction, a textbook by Kristin Thompson and David Bordwell, “The AFC helped finance about fifty features in its first five years, out performing its European counterparts by recovering about 38 percent of its investments.” The era of films made during the 1970’s and 1980’s as a result of the AFC’s funding have been referred to as Australia’s...

...A bibliography is a list of the sources you used to get information for your report. It is included at the end of your report, on the last page (or last few pages). You will find it easier to prepare your final bibliography if you keep track of each book, encyclopedia, or article you use as you are reading and taking notes. Start a preliminary, or draft, bibliography by listing on a separate sheet of paper all your sources. Note down the full title, author, place of publication, publisher, and date of publication for each source. Also, every time a fact gets recorded on a note card, its source should be noted in the top right corner. When you are finished writing your paper, you can use the information on your note cards to double-check your bibliography. When assembling a final bibliography, list your sources (texts, articles, interviews, and so on) in alphabetical order by authors' last names. Sources that don't have authors (encyclopedias, movies) should be put into alphabetical order by title. There are different formats for bibliographies, so be sure to use the one your teacher prefers. General Guide to Formatting a Bibliography For a book: Author (last name first). Title of the book. City: Publisher, Date of publication. EXAMPLE: Dahl, Roald. The BFG. New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1982. For an encyclopedia: Encyclopedia Title, Edition Date. Volume Number, "Article Title," page numbers. EXAMPLE: The Encyclopedia Brittanica...

...The Neuromancer has a major significance in cyberpunk fiction and is one of the early contributors in making it a mainstream. It also brought on some of its lingo and ideas such as, “cyberspace”. This importance didn’t happen to be as soon as it was published in 1984; however, it took several years to establish its place and popularity. The Neuromancer was unique and different from most science fiction works at the time thus establishing cyberpunk as a legitimate sub-genre. In this book, Gibson graphically describes the lifestyle, values and culture of a post-human society, which it is what this essay tries to explore. For Humans to become an entity which is very existence is dependent on technology is a scary idea. However, this fear is completely absent in this book. Instead, it is obvious that Gibson’s take on the subject is somewhat favorable to the idea of cooperation between man and machine and it should not be seen as an evil or bad thing. It’s like it was meant for humanity and technology to merge together. From enhanced reflexes to built-in holographic projectors, the characters in his book have undergone several body enhancements and modifications to give them the edge in this technological future. One example is Molly Millions, a main character, has many modifications and enhancements done to her body making her a walking death 1 machine. One of these modifications is the vision enhancing mirror lenses. Since her eye sockets are sealed with these mirror lenses...
