‘Equity’ is a complex and contested concept.
i) Provide a detailed explanation of the concept of EQUITY in education, and why it has become a key goal of many education systems around the world. (10 marks) ii) In Australia, the issue of provision of government funds to non-government (‘private’ or fee paying) schools is often identified as an issue of equity. Discuss the arguments FOR and AGAINST governments allocating funds to non-government schools in some countries, such as Australia, and include a justification of your OWN VIEW on this issue. (12 marks) iii) CRITICALLY ANALYSE the following statement:
“ Education reproduces inequalities in society”. (10 marks)

Equity in Education:

The idea of equity within society is a highly complex and contested issue, which lends itself to various definitions and meanings that are often hard to clarify. In the simplest terms, the concept of equity can be regarded as fairness, whereby personal and social circumstances, such as gender, socioeconomic class, race or ethnic group, are not obstacles in achieving ones education potential.

Citizens from all groups in society have the opportunity to participate successfully in education.
