Good And Bad Acting

Good acting to me is very clear. From the start of the movie or show I can tell if someone is a good or bad actor. An important element to good acting is being able to 100%, completely transform into the character. So much so that whenever you see the actor again in another project, you can’t get that first character out of your head. A prime example of this are the actors of the TV show, Friends. For ten years, actors like Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, and Matthew Perry played the same exact characters. They each played their respective character so unbelievably well. They fell into a mold, and it grew bigger and bigger as the years and seasons continued. They also developed mannerisms for each character, and were consistent with them through out the seasons. Each character had its own little ‘thing’ that made them different and stand out from the rest. Every time I see Matt LeBlanc (who played Joey) in something else, I can’t get “How you doin’?” out of my head. I think sometimes there’s a downside to acting so well and being so good at one character, and that is, once it’s over, no one can see you as something different, and its hard for you to find new projects to work on. For me, I can’t see any of the Friends actors playing another role without thinking of their character in Friends. Another example of good acting, is in The Wolf of Wall Street. Leonardo Decaprio, Margot Robbie and Jonah Hill were unbelievable in that movie. They completely transformed into their characters, with the accent, walks, and everything. For me, Jonah Hill is the one who did the best transformation. I wasn’t a big fan of his acting, especially because he acted the same exact way in every film he made. For example, the way he spoke and held himself in Superbad was the same way he did in 21 Jump Street. But in Wolf of Wall Street, he was a completely different actor. He embraced the character Donnie completely, and became him. One example of bad acting for me is the usage of their tone. Sometimes the tone they use screams inexperienced acting. It’s kind of like their tone at the end of their sentence that goes up. An example of this are the shows on UCTV. I once stumbled upon a show on the channel and it was painful to watch. Every sentence they said ended the same exact way. They were so flat & wooden. Another example of bad acting is Kristen Stewart in Twilight. She was another person so painful to watch. She literally had no charisma or energy at all. It looked like she wanted to be anywhere else but behind that camera. She was so dry. Bad acting is not showing emotion, or even caring for that matter. They are not letting the audience into themselves and into the storyline. I think they have to be vulnerable to make it good acting.

Theatre Appreciation

...October 10, 2012 Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson Have you ever thought ‘Wow, that person can really act!’ or ‘Whoa, that person can not act’? Many people have their own opinions of what good acting is and what bad acting is. In my case, good acting is has to be natural. When an audience watches you act, they have to see that the setting that you’re in, you’re completely comfortable in it. Meaning don’t look stiff, don’t try to ‘overact’ your part, be completely natural with your character to where the audience might think the part was made for you. Good acting is when the person feels what the character feels and can bring about the emotion that the character is feeling. Bad acting is when a person can feel somewhat awkward on stage and the audience feels that awkwardness. I feel that if you’re more engrossed in the actor or actress rather than the character that they are in then that’s when you can tell their acting is not very good. The acting in Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson was good in my opinion. Everyone seemed up to par with his or her character and no one stood out to me with any sort of bad acting. I was satisfied with the play itself and the acting played a huge part on my satisfaction. Actors typically really make up the play. If the actors aren’t good, the play won’t be good. When I first saw the actor who was going to play Andrew Jackson, I immediately assumed he was going to be a jerk due to his appearance. Later on in the play, his attitude and his personality...

Ethics

...Acting Ethically is the Only Option In tough economic times, the temptation to fudge numbers or cut corners becomes overwhelming for some employers. However, acting ethically can improve business in the long run. Oct 27, kyle Scott, Ph. D.D. EMAIL IN-SHARE TWEET COMMENTS 0 When the choice is to feed your family or break the rules, your decision isn't tough. Who could blame Jean Valjean in Les Miserables for his choice to feed his family? We even applaud Robin Hood for stealing. But when you are the boss and you have to decide whether to fire employees or fudge numbers so you can keep them on board, the decision might be more difficult. Being ethical has a higher cost in hard times than in good times, which makes being ethical difficult in our current economic climate. But even good times can encourage bad behaviour as one might get a sense of invincibility when the money is rolling in. Philosophers and theologians make abstract appeals to a higher good that lose their force when confronted with real world choices. Those things that are immediate and tangible have a greater impact on our decisions than those that are obscure or distant. In addition to all the reasons academics, philosophers and ethicists give for being ethical, there are persuasive reasons you for being ethical, particularly when times are tough. And when times are good, you may find that acting ethically may even help prevent a turn for the worse. Acting Ethically Will Make You Money There...

Acting Like A Girl

...The participants are asked to “show what it looks like to throw like a girl”, the participants flail their arms and act as if the object does not travel very far. After about 40 seconds, 5 young girls are brought in and are asked to perform the same tasks, the performances are very different. When asked to run, the young girls run as fast as they can. When asked to fight like a girl, they throw hard punches. When asked to throw like a girl, they throw as hard and as far as they can. The original participants are asked a series of questions, including “Is Like A Girl a good thing?” The first young girl who answers, replies with “I actually don’t know what it really… if it’s a bad thing or a good thing. It sounds like a bad thing. It sounds like you’re trying to humiliate someone.” The cultural myth is that acting “Like A Girl” means that you are weak and incapable of performing tasks at the same level as a man, which is so far from the truth. This commercial puts shame on the people who think less of others who act like a girl. The intended audience for this commercial would be younger females who are just starting to go through puberty and have...

Discipline and Management

...as the teacher want to take on. The classroom will be neat, safe, and the teacher should always have something going on for the students. Discipline is always misunderstood for classroom management. Discipline is not punishment and many people think it is. "This is a pathway to guide people towards self-control in the future and the outcome of discipline should not be used as the fear of authority" (Charles, 2008, p. 7). Classroom discipline should be appropriate for students functioning at any and all stage. This will enecourage good interaction for students and there will be good behavior. The terms are similar becausethey work with each other towards hopefully the same goals which are balance and harmony. They are different because classroom management is for the teacher and discipline is the students responsibility. The two terms are related to one another because management should prevent bad behavior...

Teleology and Deontology

...just because you do something bad as long as the result is good the action can be forgiven. If one man kills another man he is a murderer. But what if the man he killed, killed others? Or done worse crimes? Was he a rapist? Possibly, and if he is then was his actions justified? The saying does say if the result is good the action is justified but how good of a result does it have to be? If you rob a bank and give the money to the less fortunate is that justified? How about killing one to save the lives of many? Let’s use teleology and deontology to help us figure this out. First let’s define what deontology and teleology mean. The word deontology comes from the Greek roots deon, which means duty, and logos, which means science. Which means deontology is the "science of duty." Deontology focuses on independent moral rules or duties. In order to make the correct moral choices, we simply have to understand what our moral duties are and what correct rules help us regulate those duties. The word teleology comes from the Greek roots telos, which means end, and logos, which means science. Which means teleology is the "science of ends." Teleology focuses on the consequences which our actions might have. When we make choices which result in the correct consequences, then we are acting morally. When we make choices which result in the incorrect consequences, then we are acting immorally. Deontology dictates that if we fail to do our duty then we are acting immorally. For example if we...

Lord of the Flies Position Paper

...Are humans by nature inherently evil  Lord of the Flies provides one with a clear understanding of Golding's view of human nature?  Whether this view is right or wrong is a point to be debated.  This image Golding paints for the reader that of humans being inherently bad, is a perspective not all people share.   Lord of the Flies is but an abstract tool of Golding's to construct the idea of the inherent evil of human nature in the minds of his readers.  To construct this idea of the inherent evil, Golding employs the symbolism of Simon, Ralph, the hunt and the island. Golding drives the point that the instinctual evil within man is inescapable.  At one point in the book, when the Lord of the Flies is representing all evil, this theory is stated as, "The Lord of the Flies was expanding like a balloon".  Along with this idea is the religious symbolism that is used for ineffectively confronting the evil.  At a point in the book, Golding has Simon, symbolic of Jesus Christ, confront the Lord of the Flies.  This is a pig's head on a stick that is imagined to talk and represent the evil in all humans.  Simon tries to act and spread the knowledge of this evil to others but is killed.  This is a direct reference to the death of Christ, alluding to the Holy Bible.  At many points throughout Lord of the Flies, Golding writes for the characters to become gradually more and more evil.  This attribute even reaches the symbols of goodness and order, such as Ralph.  Once, when Ralph and...

A Negative Role Model

...In my opinion, role models are supposed to be individuals who set a good example for other human beings, most of the time these role models are famous people, such as actors, actresses, athletes, and politicians Unfortunately , not every famous person is a good influence for the society we live in. Lindsay Lohan became an actress at a young age, and ever since then she has been acting and making many movies throughout her life. Even though she is a really good actress many bad comments have been said about her and these comments have been backed up with evidence. So now the big question is, is Lindsay Lohan a good role model or influence for the children and adults living in this society? I think Lindsay Lohan is a bad influence for other humans because, she uses drugs, she is not discrete with her body, and she does not know how to behave in public. To begin with, Lindsay is a bad influence for society, especially children because she uses many drugs. She right now, is going through many trials and also rehab because she has troubles with drugs. Each time she enters rehab she fails to accomplish her goal which is to stop using so much drugs, but somehow she always manages to get herself started again, even with prescription drugs. Lindsay Lohan’s use of drugs has become so bad that in one of her trials it was said that after being kicked out of one of the rehab shelters, no other shelter wanted Lindsay because they were afraid she would destroy many months of hard work of...

On 'Existentialism Is Humanism' by Sartre

...provide a possible solution to these problems. In order to understand Sartre’s account of morality we should first examine the basis upon which it is developed. Sartre develops his account of morality from a perspective of what he calls a “consistently atheistic” existentialism. The “consistently atheistic” existentialism maintains that God does not exist. This means that there can be no universal moral values, but it also means, and this is very important for Sartre’s account that man’s existence comes before man’s essence. If God does not exist then there can be no universal moral values because such values, at least in the European morality, come from the “commandments of God”. We use these commandments to define good and evil, and upon these two opposing concepts we base our morality. Furthermore if God does not exist then man was not created according to a divine plan, his essence was not defined a priori, and therefore there is no such a thing as “Human nature”. Sartre defines his phrase “existence precedes essence” as applied to man in the following way: “…man first of all exists, encounters himself, surges up in the world—and defines himself afterwards”(EH pp. 349). By this Sartre means that man’s character (essence) is not defined when he enters the world, he is pure potentiality, and he defines himself through his actions (he himself defines his essence). Therefore, man is defined only insofar as he acts, only his...

How Actors Contribute to a Film

...respective roles, but by their emotions, facial expressions, and physical movements. This person must also be able to grab and hold the attention of the audience, and keep them entertained. What is the goal of acting? The ultimate goal of any actor should be to make the audience completely believe in the reality of the character. (Boggs & Petrie, 2008) There many ways, also known as “methods” actors may adopt to achieve their goal. One way is called the GOTE method. GOTE is a very easy to remember acronym that stands for Goal, Obstacle, Tactics and Expectation. This is a very basic approach to breaking down a character. (Russell) Goal is what the character is going after, the whole purpose for the script. The Obstacle is what stands in the way of the goal and is a direct opposition to the goal. Tactics are what the character uses to overcome the obstacles and reach the goal. The Tactics is what makes the character real, and shows the audience what type of person they are. Tactics can be funny, honorable, deceitful, etc. The Expectation gives the tone and excitement to the Tactics. This is what keeps the goals from being too academic and boring. It shows the characters excitement and enthusiasm behind the Goal. (Russell) Another method of acting that is commonly used is the Stanilsavski Method. (Ellis) This method was created by a Russian director named Konstantin Stanislavski. The major goal of Stanislavski method is to have perfect understanding...

William Golding, the author of Lord of the Flies believes humans are born evil but society keeps us from showing it. He believes all humans are born innately evil. Golding shows the reader this through examples in Lord of the Flies. Jeffery Kluger, the author of Time magazine article “What Makes Us Moral” believes it depends on how you are raised. William Golding and Jeffery Kluger have different opinions on if people are born innately good or innately evil. William Golding, the author of Lord of the Flies, believes humans are born innately evil through Lord of the Flies. Golding shows humans are evil through this quote "Roger stooped, picked up a stone, aimed, and threw it at Henry-threw it to miss" (Golding 62). This shows humans are evil because Roger is devolving from civilization and society is the only thing keeping him from Henry. Roger’s arm is controlled by civilization which is stopping him from throwing the rock at Henry. Another example is when the boys kill Simon. "A thing was crawling out of the forest. It came darkly, uncertainly. The shrill screaming that rose before the beast was like a pain. The beast stumbled into the horseshoe." (Golding 152). This shows humans are evil because the boys kill Simon even though they know he will be the only one to emerge from the forest. Simon’s death...

History of Psychology

... The career of Aristotle well represents the development of American psychology during the first half of the century. He is commonly regarded as one of the most influential figures when it comes to theoretical approaches regarding philosophical perspectives. Aristotle was the first recognized person to make key advances in the areas of logic, physical works, natural history and moral responsibility. In addition, he supported that behaviour cannot be just good or evil; instead an individual can attain good or bad personality traits. His ultimate goal is to outline what the good life entails for human beings. Aristotle made the first important developments in the field of philosophy of nature. He eventually came to realize that our realm was made up of uncountable natural forms. Aristotle held an understanding about human nature that he interconnected with his notion of virtue. According to this concept, the improvement of moral character shapes people’s perception toward others and allows them to enrich the common good. He claims that habitually, man is blind to morality suggesting that man is born without knowledge. Therefore, man has to attain knowledge of morality in order to be part of human nature. He proposes that our choices made after birth determine our morality. I too, understand the Aristotelian concept of morality. Aristotle said that moral virtues are not innate, but they are acquired by developing the habit of exercising them. For example, an...

Pinto

...In the case of the ford pinto Lee Iacocca wanted to produce a car to meet with the competition of the Japanese market. The car was to be designed and produced in a condensed time 25 months vice the 43 which would have been the usual. Ford motor company completed the task. At the time there was not a standard from the national highway traffic safety committee as to a rear-end impact, that requirement was not in place until after production. I find Ford was not acting un-ethical in the design and production of the vehicle. The un-ethical part of the event started at the point when the rear-impact test was performed and it was found that the pinto was not up to par. Ford was on the correct path as to the testing of the pinto. There will always be a new regulation in any process of production.
