Good Boss vs Bad Boss

...Good Boss vs. Bad Boss Cherie "Stacy" Martin COM/170 Elements of University Composition and Communication I January 28, 2012 Deidra Powell-Wallace Good Boss vs. Bad Boss There are many aspects of becoming a boss but , it is the way you present yourself, that determines of you are a good boss or a bad boss. When you think of a boss, how would you define them as a good boss or a bad boss? A good boss is one that has respect for everyone she would be understanding, knowledgeable, caring, and a good solid leader. To become that leader she would have great organizational skills, which include setting a realistic goal for the day. Make a systematic plan as to what is the most important to the least important thing to do for the day, initiate your plan by delegating it out to your employees, and follow up throughout the day to make sure you are training and teaching your employees. This will help them create and teach them how to achieve a goal by the end of the day. Always be prepared for the unexpected, but still maintain your goal. A bad boss is one that has no respect, no knowledge, does not like her job and has no concept of how to plan a day’s work or even reach a goal. She would be the type of boss that expects you to know what to do, then if you mess the project up you get yelled at or even are fired. When it was no fault of yours it was because your boss is not a leader at all. She may come to work late and want the employee to do all the work. She...

Good Boss vs Bad Boss

...Good Boss vs. Bad Boss There are many traits that a boss needs; like communication, respect and mentoring. These traits and others will decide whether you are a good boss or bad. It will depends on how one looks at it, are you an employee or a boss. Bosses will come and go, however the good ones will always stand out from the bad ones. At the same time, ironically, it’s easy to spot both extremes, good and bad. Everyone has a difference of opinion on what makes a good boss. I have worked for several bosses and the good ones outweigh the bad. When treated with respect and understanding an employee feels good about the job they are doing, and the boss. Communication and respect are important keys to any relationship, and the relationship between a boss and an employee is no exception. Because employees are the backbone of any business, a bad employee can negatively impact a business. Good bosses teach, train, and listen to their employees when they make suggestions, as they come from personal experience with customers or with a work situation that they have found that needs attention. Communication is key in a manager and employee relationship, understanding each other is key, questions need to be asked if needed to make sure everyone is on the same page. An employee’s perspective differs from the perspective of a boss, therefore meaningful discussion between both parties can bring positive changes and this will promote on a dialog of both...

Good Boss vs. Bad Boss

...employees feel that as long as they do their job everything will be okay, but is that true? Do the actions of the supervisor influence the job? Let’s look how an efficient vs. an inefficient supervisor influences the workplace, as well as production. How efficient supervisors influence the workplace An efficient supervisor is easy to work with and tries to create an enjoyable working environment by doing and provided several things to his employees. To start he mentors and inspires his employees by his own actions. The efficient supervisor helps the employee learn and grow so they can be the best, therefore when necessary he goes the extra step by physically getting down on the job; demonstrating to the employees that he knows how to complete the job. Due to his experience he is able to teach his employees. Another thing that influences the workplace by the efficient supervisor is his involvement on the job, is that he is able to listen and evaluate the employees’ needs and then attempts to meet them. He is a good team member as well as a leader. An efficient supervisor has good communication skills, and morale. When a supervisor has excellent communication skills it means the supervisor is willing to keep in touch with the employees by communicating with the employee regardless of their position, while proving good morale. Managing the Boss

...The relationship with your boss is probably the most important relationship you have at work. Boss management can stimulate better performance, improve your working life, job satisfaction, and workload. Give your boss a hand and reap the rewards. ________________________________________ When we think of managing someone, we usually think of managing our team members or subordinates. The above title appeared for the first time a few years ago in a Harvard Business Review article written by two well known socio-psychologists. Their argument was that in modern companies, subordinates are not solely dependent on their bosses, but that today's complexity requires interdependence: the boss needs her team as well. I have the vantage point of being an adviser to top management, a CEO, and now as Co-Director of the PED program at IMD. In addition, I have been involved in the restructuring of a major international company, which involves some 12,000 people and 12 hierarchical levels. In order to unleash the energies and get closer to customers, we divided the group into 250 'small companies' of some 50 people each and of three hierarchical levels. To change the mindset, we organised a 20-day management seminar, during which we discussed the challenge of how to deal with bosses, who in the old structure, tended to hamper change. The whole process forced me to crystallize my observations and previous experience and test them with the 250 managers. I have grouped the results into...

...social psychological tendency for observers to decide that the lucky person must have done something to deserve his good fortune. He or she becomes a better person simply by virtue of the observed rewards. • Conversely, if something bad happens to someone, the belief in a just world causes the conclusion that the victim must have been a bad person. • Success, however achieved, will promote efforts to find the many positive virtues in those who are successful – thereby justifying their success. • Paying attention to what departments are represented in powerful positions provides an important clue as to where the power lies. Obstacles o Belief that the world is a just place.  People want the world to be controllable and predictable, thus they want to believe the world is just, and thus if you behave by the rules you will be all right, or if you fail to follow the rules bad things will happen.  Hand-me-down management formulas that reinforce this false belief. o Yourself.  Don’t self-handicap. People are afraid of setbacks and implications for their self-image; so they often don’t do all they can to increase their power.  Get over yourself and beyond your concerns with self-image, or, for that matter, the perception others have of you. Good Day vs Bad Day

...GS1145 Bendall Short Answer 5.1 Good Day vs Bad Day Breckinridge School of Nursing Barbara Walker Abstract Anyone working as a nursing assistant has chosen a very challenging path. Poor compensation, workplace politics, short staffing, conflict between coworkers, irate and difficult residents, miscommunication, heavy lifting and the loss of those for whom we care all make for a tough work environment. I definitely have locked myself in the linen closet to get myself together moments. So, why do I keep coming back? Why do I stay? First of all, I embrace the challenge. I thrive on it. In my life, it is a rare and beautiful thing to be able to bring order to chaos rather than the other way around. I work at Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital and I have to say, the patients inspire me every day. We have a variety of patients; with cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s disease, cancer, dementia, brain and spinal cord injuries and just knee or hip replacements that still laugh and love and find joy in nothing short of amazing. It’s such an incredible gift to be a part of their lives…to walk them through the tough days and celebrate with them during their triumphs. They have shown me the uselessness of the word impossible. They all touch my heart, and I hope I touch their heart too. Good Day vs Bad Day I have to say that I’m proud of the work that I do. Nursing assistants come in all shapes and sizes. We are both male and female. Our Physical appearances are different...

At-Will Assignment 5

...by Justice Harlan in Adair vs. U.S. in 1908. Employment-at-will is a legal rule that developed in the nineteenth century, which gave employers the power to “dismiss their employees at will for good cause, for no cause, or even for cause morally wrong, without being thereby guilty of a legal wrong”(Halber,Ingulli). Although it is clearly stated about the employment-at-will and how employers can fire employees for anything, there are some exceptions to the rule. Three Key Exceptions The first exception to employment-at-will is the public-policy exception. With the public-policy exception, an employee is wrongfully terminated when it is against an explicit, established policy of the State the company is out of. The employer cannot fire an employee if they have a worker’s compensation claim if they were hurt at work. “It is recognized in 43 out of the 50 states. A couple states that do not recognize this are Nebraska, Florida, and New York”. (bls.gov, pg. 5) The public policy exception is the one exception that is mostly regarded in the U.S. The second exception to the employment-at-will is the implied-contract exception. This happens when the it is an implied contract between both parties, even though there is no written contract. The employer may make verbal or written representations to employees regarding the security of their job. Some states that do not follow this are Missouri, Texas, and Florida. The last exception is the covenant of good faith exception. This is one...

Employment-at-Will and Human Resources Situations

...Employment-at-Will & HR To The Rescue LEG500 Professor Kapalko 2 February 2014 Summarize the employment at will doctrine and evaluate each of the 8 scenarios. The employment at will doctrine is a common-law rule that an employment contract of indefinite duration can be terminated by either the employer or the employee at any time for any reason; also known as terminable at will. Traditionally, U.S. employers have possessed the right to discharge their employees at will for any reason, be it good or bad. The "at-will" category encompasses all employees who are not protected by express employment contracts that state that they may be fired only for good cause. "Good cause" requirements are typically a part of collective bargaining agreements negotiated by employee unions; nonunion workers rarely have this form of protection. The at-will doctrine also does not apply to contracts for a specified term, such as an employment contract that contemplates the employee providing service for a expressly designated number of years. In the following scenarios, the company’s human resources team must take action and decide whether to fire several employees for harmful actions. The scenarios are: John posted a rant on his Facebook page in which he criticized the company’s most important customer. In this scenario, John has publicly criticized the company’s most important customer, which might lead the customer to suspend all business with the company. Due to this customer being...
