...Education and Workforce Development Ninth Quality in Higher Education International Seminar in collaboration with ESECT and The Independent. Birmingham 27th-28th January 2005 The Competencies for Next Generation Employability Eamonn McQuade, Deirdre Hogan, John O’Donoghue, Theresa Maguire, Eamonn Murphy. Programme for the University Industry Interface, University of Limerick Conference Theme 3: Working with employers Abstract It is generally accepted that employees will need to broaden their knowledge, skills and competencies through a lifetime of learning if they are to remain employable, and if enterprises are to maintain their competitiveness in a knowledge-based global economy. However, identifying and developing skills and competencies for next generation employability in Ireland is a challenging task. The Programme for University Industry Interface (PUII) is an action research project, established in 2003, to determine the skills and competencies required by Irish Industry and to develop learning models that will facilitate their delivery. This paper presents the outcomes of an action research methodology based on a Community of Practice model (COP), which addressed the issues surrounding competencies for next generation employability. It proposes a competency framework which integrates the four key categories of skills: Business, Technical, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, and presents a set of recommendations for individuals, employers and higher...

...professional development for the purposes of this report can be defined as an attempt to help the individual analyse their abilities and interests to guide their placement, progression, and development through various assessment activities (Gunnigle & Flood, 1990, p. 172). Literature suggests that the effectiveness of several management and professional development activities can be enhanced by paying attention to managerial self-awareness and variables related to self-awareness like self-efficacy (McCarthy & Garavan, 1999). Admundson (1995), argues that the two key variables that moderate career decisions are the individual’s self-awareness and self-efficacy which are essential because high levels of self-awareness and self-efficacy enables the individual to exert more control over long term effects and are in a better posistion to respond proactively to situations. Therefore, analysing managerial and professional development in regard to self-awareness creates a positive effect to both personal and professional enhancements. This report posits the importance of managerial self-awareness to the effectiveness of personal and professional development. It aims to develop understanding of self awareness for career development gauged from feedback tools, specifically the Personal Assessment of Management Skills (PAMS) instrument. To identify strengths and skill areas for development and to identify long term career goals. Firstly, the report reviews the PAMS instrument against popular...

...profession that something needs to be done to keep up with the pace. “With more than 3 million members, the nursing profession is the largest segment of the nation’s health care workforce” ("Report," 2010). The message of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in regards to the future of nursing clearly states that changes should be made in its field in order to meet these emerging demands. As stated in the IOM report on The Future of Nursing: “A number of barriers prevent nurses from being able to respond effectively to rapidly changing health care setting and an evolving health care system. These barriers need to be overcome to ensure that nurses are well-positioned to lead change and advance health” ("Report," 2010). Because of this, focus in the changes in education, nursing practice, nursing role, and leadership are the key requirements for nurses today. If changes are not started at this time, then the future of quality and safe nursing care is at risk. Knowledge is power, and quality education is needed to acquire knowledge. “A more educated nursing workforce would be better equipped to meet the demands of an evolving health care system, and this need could be met by increasing the percentage of nurses with a BSN” ("The Need for Highly-Educated Nurses," 2011, p. 1). The goal of the IOM report on the future of nursing, with respect to education, is to increase the number of nurses with baccalaureate degrees from 50% to 80% by 2020. A solid educational background is a foundation...

...vision and analytical technology for the externally globalized environment – social and economy (Y.K. Pang, HKIE, 2009). Integrated with the upward paragraph, this promotion has rapidly developed owing to the advocate of “Lifelong Learning” (executed by Tung Chee-hwa, the first Chief Executive of HKSAR). Based on the data generation, the percentage of growth rate of continuous education has increasing from 18 in 2002 to 28 in 2003 (Professor K.M. Yeung, HKU SPACE). In the literature aspects, “Lifelong Learning” is the recognition that learning may stretch out across a lifetime for anyone sustainability use and renew throughout each lifespan (Field, 2006). Based on Role of Reflection in Learning (Kolb, 1984), its operation is coordinated with 3 main items – (1) 1 Action, (2) Reflect on Experience; and (3) Conclude and Learn. For my own view, it could be comprehended with using the outcome of your lifespan to strengthen the core competence to make the continuous improvement for the future action. This dominant academic skill will be critically used in this professional project. In Hong Kong, the educational development “Lifelong Learning” is coherent with “Qualifications Framework”, a technical term that is defined as the facilitation among academic, vocational and continuing education through the establishment of a comprehensive and voluntary network...
