The damages of Television and movies

Television and movies have changed since I was born, it wasn’t that much like it is now where mostly all of the movies and television shows have sex and violence in a lot of scenes. If you were to ask someone what they thought about the movie sin city many would say that it had a lot of violence and sex. When I was younger I went to go see that I was about to turn 15 and wow that movie had a lot of stuff in it. I believe they should have more strict rules about children and teenagers seeing those kinds of movies and television shows.

Today many children and teenagers are allowed to see movies that are rated R as long as their parents or guardian are present. Honestly that should not be allowed period. There are many things children shouldn’t see and two of those things are sex and violence. If their raised in a bad environment and their allowed to see stuff like that that could in fact affect them in the long run. There have been many people I know influenced by movies that become very bad people doing all types of wrongs.

Now in today’s generation television shows aren’t as bad as the movies but some if not most still have sex and violence and most of them. Now parents have a little more control now than they did back then due to the parental controls most cable companies provide. Though there are some people who just don’t care about what their children watch. Many shows that I know would affect a child would be the walking dead, sons of anarchy, and the breaking bad. I mean really The breaking bad is about a person who cooks meth, the walking dead is about zombies and for sure would give children nightmares, and the sons of anarchy are a motorcycle crew who do all kinds of wrong. If I ever have a child I will not ever show him/her this kinda stuff at such a young age.

Now another influence that cases problems is games. Many games are in fact similar to movies, the newest one that was the worst for children to play would be grand thief auto 5. This game has caused a lot of problems, many children have played this game and have become very affected by it. In some instances they have been come raged-filled monsters (Cheese). There was a teenager who was at least 16 or 17 and he thought it would be okay to steal a car from another person. There is a phrase I would like to bring up “Monkey see, monkey do”, they see this stuff on games, movies and television and think that it is okay to do themselves this is what causes their foul behavior. A study found that the rate of foul language in 1999 was more than five and one half times higher than that of 1989 (Anderson). Again I must bring back what I said before “monkey see, monkey do”, they hear other people say foul language and they think it’s okay to use it to talk to other people or insult them.

Technology today are more advanced than it was back then so what I think that every cable company should do before selling their product is to have them set up the parental control if they have children in their homes. I think that many people just don’t know how to set it up and that’s why many children can watch the shows they aren’t supposed to watch. With this I believe they will have a better control of what they watch and what channel they switch to.

Many children’s behavior depends on what they see and what they watch. They think that if they see other people saying bad stuff they can do it too or if they see other people do bad stuff they would also want to do stuff like that. If their parents allow them to watch rated-R movies and TV-ma shows they will be affected by it somehow. They either would want to do bad stuff when their growing up or maybe if there in their teens they would do stuff like that all the time.

A huge factor in all of this is the internet, many shows and movies provide advertisement on websites. Many children if left unprotected will click on that advertisement and are shown stuff they aren’t supposed to watch. Now parental control is on the internet as well but again many parents just don’t know how to use it or turn it on.

All in all I think it would be better if for the movie companies to just not allow children under the age of 13 be allowed to watch rated-r movies. Again for the television I think it would be best for the cable companies to at least set their parental controls up for parents who do not know how to set them up. Though we cannot control what every single child is watching we can at least try and give the parents the control of what they watch.
