...Some argue that the positive aspects of fraternity or sorority affiliation outweigh the negative incidents that sometimes occur on college campuses. Others say that Greek organizations are out-dated and should be banned from college campuses. The majority of fraternity and sorority have mission statements that promote positive behavior and high standards among its members; however, most students are interested in being a part of a frat to simply drink and part. According to the article by Aja Frost “Fraternity mission statements talk about leadership, philanthropy, community service, character and brotherhood, but ask the average student what comes to mind when you say “frat,” and the answer is usually “drinking.” The quote shows that students are not interested in the positive values frats have to offer instead they just want to part. Recent headlines have been dominated by stories related to the reckless behavior among Greek Organizations. Therefore, I believe Greek Organizations are an invaluable part of the college experience due to...

...Many Greek Societies, more commonly known as sororities and fraternities, have a bad reputation in the eyes of the public. This is due to the fact that social media primarily highlights the negative aspects of Greek Life, which are alcohol and substance abuse, and hazing. This is not what all sororities and fraternities are about; in fact, being in Greek Life can be very beneficial to an individual. Many successful people such as Charles Berger, the vice president of Apple Inc., eighteen U.S presidents including Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, and George W. Bush, and many actors and singers have been involved in Greek Life. This demonstrates that not all students in Greek Life are your stereotypical frat guy or sorority...

...and sororities are organizations that play vital roles in one’s college life, the educative community of colleges and universities, and the society that these organizations are in. These organizations are present in about eighty-five percent of all the colleges and universities around the world. Commonly referred to as Greek societies these organizations provide great opportunities for college students to develop their skills and appreciate their interests with peers whom they call and consider brothers or sisters. Being part of a Greek society poses a number of advantages to individuals that are in their college years. Membership in a fraternity or sorority gives students the opportunity to meet new people and enjoy college life while still excelling academically. These organizations provide greater fields for their members to excel in what they do best and discover more things and gain more knowledge about themselves. These Greek organizations present wider social and career networking thus making school and employment easier for their members. But while Greek societies present such number of advantages, the brotherhood or sisterhood also has its own set of disadvantages especially for new recruits, pledges and neophytes. Cases of abusive initiation rites, criminal behaviors and sexual assaults are frequently acquainted to the concept of Greek societies most especially fraternities. Due to these Greek societies are also frequently condemned but in truth Greek societies are also...

...II. Greece public debt 1. Current situation Greece has been in the public debt crisis since 2009. The Greek public debt crisis is one of a number of current European sovereign-debt crises and is believed to have been caused by a combination of structural weaknesses of the Greek economy coupled with the incomplete economic, tax and banking unification of the European Monetary Union. Those days, Greece has confronted with three main related problems: government trust crisis, declining liquidity capacity and high risk of bankruptcy. a) Government trust crisis The prestige of Greek government was impaired seriously during crisis time. Greece borrowed uncontrollable amounts from the financial market to ensure the liquidity for the budget deficit. The budget deficit limit allowed in Eurozone was only 3% of the GDP, while this level of Greece in 2009 was 13.6% and might even increase to over 14%. To cover the overspending in the past years, the Greek government had reported data inconsistently and bias, containing various unusual sections in budget. This action drew to the negative consequences on the reputation of the Greek government on the domestic as well as international market. The credit ascertaining organization successively downgraded Greece recently. Within the first four months of 2010 S&P had lowered continuously the credibility coefficient of Greece, from A- to BBB+ and BB+. b) Declining liquidity capacity Unpaid debt of Greece was nearly 400 billion...

...Abstract By charter, national Greek organizations (ie, fraternities and sororities) place an emphasis on upholding personal integrity, academic scholarship, and development of campus leaders. Recent concerns, however, assert that the drinking behaviors of members of Greek organizations are antithetical to the mission of their universities. Objective: The author's purpose in this review was to systematically examine scientific literature addressing the effect of Greek affiliation on alcohol-related beliefs and behaviors. The internal and external influences affecting Greek members' alcohol-related beliefs and behaviors are organized into a frame-work of various health behavior theories, based on the ecological perspective's levels of influence. Results: Results provide a broad perspective into the individual characteristics, social peer network, and environmental aspects influencing alcohol-related behavior among Greek members. Findings suggest that Greek members comprise a subgroup that consumes alcohol in greater quantities, underscores and misperceives the risks of alcohol abuse, and emulates a social environment and culture in which drinking alcohol is a key part of life. Problem drinking during the college years is a significant public health concern. The goal of the current review was to examine the primary psychosocial factors that predict problem drinking in college students. Variables examined included demographic variables, personality, drinking history, alcohol expectancies...

...because of the following: *Prioritization -Greek life might become your top priority in life, even over family and friends. Yes, you will learn a lot about life, leadership skills and business. Some people get very passionate about their Greek life that it has moved above school, family and friends on their priority list. *Time Commitment -Fraternities' and sororities' members will be asked to commit their time to the fraternity or sorority. This creates a huge cut through a student's academics. Most of the students join Greek life during their Freshman year so most of the members are new to college. They have not yet experienced the ways of college thus they would have difficulties in balancing their time between the organization and its activities and academics. *Ruins Relationships -If you already have a busy life, then by becoming a member of the Greek life you will become even busier especially during pledging. It could take time away from a boyfriend, girlfriend or great friendship. *Influence of Friends -Some members are just strained to join the organization because their friends are joining and they don't want to be left behind. So basically, they are not really into Greek life but they are forced to join because they don't want to go separate ways from their friends. Because of this, these forced members might not agree to some activities in the organization. *The Cost -It would be very costly to join Greek life. There are many fees to be paid like...

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT I would like to express my special thanks of gratitude to my teacher Mrs.Magtibay as well as our principal Mr.Empleo who gave me the golden opportunity to do this wonderful project on the topic of Fraternity, which also helped me in doing a lot of Research and i came to know about so many new things I am really thankful to them. Secondly i would also like to thank my parents and friends who helped me a lot in finalizing this project within the limited time frame. INTRODUCTION Fraternities and sororities are often seen as both detrimental and beneficial to college campuses. Some acknowledge the benefits of Greek organizations for both the individuals who participate in them and for the institution. A fraternity or sorority can provide a caring and supportive subcommunity where students develop interpersonal and leadership skills , make friends, learn how an organization works, develop a common cause, participate in community service, and have fun .Kimbrough (1995) found that Black fraternities and sororities provided a significant source of leadership development...

... Is Greek Life a Good Thing For Colleges? You may have heard of people like Mathew McConaughy, Donald Trump, Eli Manning, Brad Pitt, Erin Andrews, Alicia Keyes, and Jennifer Garner. This group of people are all successful but being successful is not the only thing they have in common. Each one of them were a brother or sister of a Greek Organization at the college they attended. A Greek organization is more formally known as fraternity and sorority groups. These groups are an organized society of men and women connected together in an environment of friendship and brotherhood or sisterhood. They are dedicated to the academic and social growth of its members. For many years people have tried to ban Greek groups from college universities. These people say that fraternities and sororities do nothing to help the university. These people are wrong. I believe that fraternities and sororities are positive organizations that help the college and the students do well and should not be banned. Fraternities and sororities make the college experience more enjoyable for students, members are active in the community and the university, and after they graduate they will have multiple connections because of the many brothers and sisters they have. Greek organizations have a long history and it is taking serious by members. Grades are also an important factor to the brothers and sisters; they will not take their education lightly because they will be punished. Ryans 2 Greek Life, as...

...Related Studies and Literature Local Related Literature In joining a fraternity, one must undergo the initiation rites better known as hazing. Some dismiss hazing as a parochial issue, to be dealt with only by the universities and academies involved. But in his article “Hazing should concern us all”, Juan Alvin Tiamson submits that it should concern us all. He wrote that by now, hazing particularly the violent kind has invaded most of our institutions. It is now prevalent in schools even in police and military academies. Hazing, as we all know, systematically develops a culture of violence among the youth. Most importantly, the bonds developed by hazing become seeds of corruption. Hazing is hazing whether it results in death, mutilation or years of pain or whether it is done inside or outside the school or institution. In the article “Fraternal Fury” written by Argee Guevara, he stated that there is something intriguing and frightening about the culture of college fraternities. The more we try to understand it, the more we end up abhorring it. As a result of two rival fraternities rumble, one was reported by TV Patrol to have been severely injured after getting a pretty nasty whack on the head when rival frat men pounce on him with lead pipes, clubs and baseball bats. The cause of rumble is un-important since rumbles erupt for a variety of reason, none of which is intimately related to the pursuit of academic excellence, the repudiation of our foreign debt or the liberation...

...Why We Should End Hazing in Greek Life Some people may think that hazing isn’t a problem or might just think it doesn’t happen at all. These opinions are because hazing happens behind closed doors and has become very secretive because of the amount of trouble students can get in if they are caught. I feel that hazing has become a huge problem among universities and really needs to be addressed on to find solutions. Hazing in general can happen in sports teams, high school and the military, but I feel that it is currently a huge issue in college Greek Life. It is a huge problem among many universities across the country and there have been laws passed in some states to end it, but it always seems to occur in many fraternities and sororities. Hazing does not only affect people physically, but mentally as well. It is an abuse of power that can have devastating and life-threatening consequences. When I think of hazing, I immediately think of forcing a younger student to drink alcohol in a short amount of time. I personally think that a person should not have to drink alcohol or do an asinine prank to become a member of a group. It is a group working towards a certain cause and they shouldn’t be associating alcohol with their induction into the group. There have been many tragic events that have happened in the past that have been related to hazing in college. Statistics from Hank Nuwer (1990) show that hazing has been associated with more than 50 deaths in college fraternities...

...UNIVERSITIES IN THE PHILIPPINES By: Noruie A. Magabilin 1BSA-2 Chapter 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND This chapter includes the problem and its background, statement of the problem, significance of the study, the scope and delimitation and the definition of terms. Introduction Fraternities and Sororities is generally considered as a bad organization or brotherhood nowadays. And this Brotherhood affects the academic performance of many students especially some of Bs accountancy students who tried to join this brotherhood. The reasons that a student may choose to explore social or service fraternity or sorority life are as varied as the students themselves who join. Many students find that membership in a chapter gives them opportunities to develop valuable skills they have not been able to find elsewhere. Sometimes, joining a fraternity or sorority is an excellent way for some students to meet people, get more acclimated to campus life, gain important leadership skills, have fun, contribute to the community, and/or establish life-long friendships. Fraternity and sorority life is not for every student Right around now is the start of the academic year at many universities. Among the traditional activities accompanying the start of school is fraternity/sorority rush, in which students especially some of the BS Accountancy students ,who wish to join a Greek-letter organization attend functions to learn about and select from the different houses and the fraternities...
