...If you walk up Poly Canyon Road and take a left, crossing Brizzolara Creek, you will come to the agriculture portion of main campus. The abbotoir stands next to the bull pen and the creek. The bridge crosses a fish ladder to aid the salmon back up the creek to where they can spawn. If you continue walking you will come to a reservoir with pumps and machinery used by engineering students. On the other side of the reservoir, there is a small bird sanctuary and beyond are fields that are often full of students learning how to survey the land. Behind you a stand of trees blocks out the bustle of campus life and in front of you the fields are ringed by beautiful mountains. But this is all about to change. The abbatoir is going to be moved and the fields will become the concrete foundations of a new residential complex: Student Housing North. Student Housing North is a huge residential development that was approved and added to the Master Plan in 2001 and is projected to be completed in stages beginning in 2007. The complex will be comprised mainly of apartment style upper class housing but will also include restaurant and retail spaces. The plan is to double the number of students living on campus. The project will include two new parking structures in order to support the increase of students. A lot of controversy surrounds this aspect of the new project. The development aims to reduce traffic and congestion because 2,700 students will be living on campus instead of commuting...

Healthy Way…. • We have been aware of the need to live in places that promote a healthy way of life and therefore the well-being of people. • India’s antique heritage buildings have fully demonstrated how such buildings were regarded and made. • With the advent of Industrialization there was an increase in pollution and Global warming. • It lead to Environmental degradation on a large scale. Protection of our eco system became the need of the hour. This lead to the birth and need of Green Building concept! Key Questions 1. Why “Green” Building? 2. What is the difference between “Green Building” and “Conventional Building”? 3. What benefits do we get by going “Green”? Defining Green Buildings “Design and construction practices that significantly reduce, or eliminate the negative impact of buildings on the environment and its occupants with regard to site planning; safeguarding water use and water use efficiency; promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy; conserving materials and resources; and promoting indoor environmental quality.” (US Green Building Council) What does Green Building Offer? • Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is one of the top 5 factor which cause environmental risks to public health. ...Review of the White Paper on Sustainability A Report on the Green Building Movement, Building Design & Construction, November 2003. Abstract In fulfillment of an assignment to review the White Paper on Sustainability: A Report on the Green Building Movement, Building Design & Construction, November 2003. The White Paper on Sustainability main elements; are the historical overview of green building, the results of a specially commissioned survey, an analysis of trends, issues, and published research. And the last one is a set of recommendations that describe specific actions to be performed. A brief history of green building is also discussed in the white paper. The basics of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) including the LEED Certification levels and points system. The role of the Federal and State government in the sustainable building program, and the benefits we get from green buildings are also covered. Main Body Sustainable building is environmentally friendly, efficient using energy, water, and other materials. Green buildings is also protects occupant health and improving productivity. On Earth Day, April 21, 1993 the US President announced the plan to make the white house a model for efficiency and waste reduction. Within 36 months the improvements to the Presidential mansion let to $300,000 in, energy, and water savings. The greening of the White House also reduces the carbon footprint by 845 tons per year. The first of three “greening”...

...ACE TECHZION 2K15 Implementation and explanation of the Green Building concepts PRESENTED BY Y.SAI KRISHNA 138P1A0137 Towards the implementation and explanation of the Green Building concept Y.SAI KRISHNA (1256sai@gmail.com) Abstract: The “Green Building” is an interdisciplinary theme, where the green building concept includes a multitude of elements, components and procedures which diverge to several subtopics that intertwined to form the green building concept. Generally, the green building is considered to be an environmental component, as the green building materials are manufactured from local eco-sources, i.e. environmentally friendly materials, which are then used to make an eco-construction subject to an eco-design that provides a healthy habitat built on the cultural and architectural heritage in construction while ensuring conservation of natural resources. This ensures disassembling the building components and materials, after a determined building lifetime, to environmentally friendly materials that can be either re-used or recycled. During their lifecycle, the green buildings minimize the use of resources (energy and water); reduce the harmful impact on the ecology, and provide better indoor environment. Green buildings afford a high level of environmental, economic, and engineering performance. These include energy efficiency and conservation, improved indoor air quality, resource and material efficiency, and occupant's health...

...Individual assignment DMAIC Triple Mock Up Green Building I am Anas Bin Razali with my team of team 16 are doing research at date of 15/03/2015, our group had went to British Malaysian Institute (BMI) to do our research on the Triple Mock Up Green Building. This experiment is essential as to compare with the green building and the conventional house build by typical material. For the individual assignment, I have to compare roof/walls/ambient/floor/windows temperature between M1, M2, and M4. M3 is yet under construction so it is not yet reliable to measure. Devine Chart Data I choose building M1 because of its material and structure are different than M2 and M4. M1 is made up of wood wool plus cement and it is a material produced using more than 80 years of European research and technology comprising entirely natural and non toxic materials. It is a building material made from wood fibers that are chemically impregnated and cleverly bonded under pressure with cement to form a light weight building material that produces great durability and versatility. The temperature exceeds the tropical thermal comfort line 11.30a.m onwards up to 32.8 C. It decrease a little but still up high from the tropical thermal comfort line. But from data that I collect with my friend and do different part to calculate the temperature, we confirm that in M1 there a leakage of temperature because of the structure in the roof. Measure Thermal camera The thermal camera we use it to measure...

...WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE BUILDINGS/ DEVELOPMENT? WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE/ GREEN BUILDINGS? In the 21st century, our world is developing from every aspect in a blink of an eye. Everywhere we go, there’s huge tall buildings, shopping centres, etc. But the question is, what is the advantage of a sustainable building? Sustainable building also known as green building refers to a structure and using process that is environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building's life-cycle. The common objective is that green buildings are designed to reduce the overall impact of the built environment on human health and the natural environment by: - Efficiently using energy, water, and other resources. - Protecting occupant health and improving employee productivity. - Reducing waste, pollution and environmental degradation. A similar concept is natural building, which is usually on a smaller scale and tends to focus on the use of natural materials that are available locally. Sustainability may be defined as meeting the needs of present generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Green building practices aim to reduce the environmental impact of building. The first rule is that the greenest building is the building that doesn't get built. Since construction almost always degrades a building site, not building at all is preferable to green building, in terms of reducing environmental impact. The...

...Designing a green building Designing a green building Mason Holmes GS1140 Mason Holmes GS1140 A zero-energy building is a building that gives back more electricity than it uses. By doing this, the owner actually saves a predicted $750 annually. The thought of the buildings sound very expensive, but as stated in this article, “With a $188,000 price tag -- only $9,000 more than Oakwood's Energy Star version of the same house -- it could soon be the most affordable net-zero home in the country. With about $750 in energy savings predicted annually, homeowners are expected to see a full return on their investment in less than 12 years.” (“Net-Zero Energy Buildings Take Hold in U.S., n.d.), you can see that for a house with solar panels and low-energy appliances that $188,000 is not bad for a four bedroom house that uses no air conditioning. GE or General Electric, have already started with these ideas and are teaming up with companies such as Tendril and Pacific Gas & Electric Co. to really get the upper hand in the smart home field. If I was to build a building of some sort that was “net-zero”, I would build a house, or houses for that matter. I would include various appliances that used little energy and water. Also, adding solar panels to the roof and possibly a smaller wind turbine on the side of the house would be very beneficial to generating power for all appliances in the home. I would build the house in a normally sunny region with moderate wind that has...

...Understanding Green Building Construction in Singapore Abstract: Given the pressing environmental issues that is plaguing the world in the 21st century coupled with the global changing of the climate each day, Green Building Construction is starting to be more recognized among counties. Most countries around the world are looking more towards sustainable development in the long term. Such is the case of Singapore as it established various schemes and initiatives to address the environmental degradation problems that it is facing at the moment. In this paper, I will be elaborating the approach that has been undertaken by the Singapore Government in its efforts to developing Green and sustainable buildings in Singapore. From up to date, the initiatives were quite successful but there are still certain limitations which will be addressed at the later part. No doubt that Singapore has enjoyed some success in the area of Green Construction, it will still be imperative for Singapore to continuously improve itself and maintain its success should it want to keep its competitive advantage internationally in the long run. ...Resolution of cultural conflicts A conflict is the occurrence of a clash between two or more parties, mainly as a result of conflicting interests or practices (Lansford, 2008). There are many courses of conflict, among them being cultural, racial, ethnic and sexual diversity. Culture basically refers to a person way of life, therefore, other aspects of diversity can all be said to arise from differences in cultural practices. In a situation where there is multicultural interaction, there is bound to be conflicting interests as aspects of one culture might entirely conflict with the other person’s interest. Conflict resolutions in these cases require more consideration and compromise than conflicts that arise among people of similar orientations. Both parties must recognize each others practices in order for the process of conflict resolution to commence. Recognition of the differences helps the conflict resolution process to integrate the differences, and to harmonize them where possible. It is also important that the incidence of cultural grouping is avoided as it may lead to a lack of unity and promotes homogeneous interactions. This is not healthy for the general well being of the group because it leads to conflict when the interactions occur owing to a lack of familiarity. In this regard, people should also be discouraged from being too centered on there culture as it discourages them from understanding the different cultures. In conflict resolution, it is also important...

...Sustainable Construction and Green Design info Green Building Discussions USGBC- United States Green Building Council. organziation website “www.usgbc.org” NAHB- National Association of Home Builders. organization website “www.nahb.com” Built Green- organization website “www.builtgreen.net” These “organizations” are organized around the idea that a group of individuals have found merit and acheivement in creating better building practices that benefit the environment and an owner’s built habitat. The individuals probably understood that creating an organization would benefit their agenda more efficiently and effectively than just a charter or group. The organizations then have the interest of their members. Their members have founded these organizations simply to provide better building practices, cleaner environment, more effecient energy use, and better overall quality life built directly from the green building elements. The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) does not appear to have been started with the initial effort to create green building practices. This organization has been around longer than the green building movement began its’ roots, but has watched the trends of the housing market, evaluated the financial systems within this industry, and have forecast from these analysis. Provided, the NAHB has seen a growing interest in the community to create higher quality homes and businesses while also protecting the environment. The NAHB bagan their interest...

...Vol. 14 Nº 27 Ben Tran: Green Management: The reality of Being Green in Business 21 GREEN MANAGEMENT: THE REALITY OF BEING GREEN IN BUSINESS GESTIÓN VERDE: LA REALIDAD DE LA SOSTENIBILIDAD ECOLÓGICA EN LA GESTIÓN GERENCIAL Ben Tran1 ABSTRACT Green management and going green are not as clear cut and easy as hyped by the general media. While going ecologically green is indeed beneficial and appropriate, the process and procedure of becoming green is anything but easy. Firstly, turning green is largely not a legal requirement, but a voluntary process. Thus, even though LEED (which is by far the more publicly known green certification standard) governs the certification of the green management effort, it is not a compulsory condition for practitioners to go green. Secondly, even with the encouragement of incentives to comply, practitioners are skeptical in becoming green due to: (a) a lack of true understanding of the benefit of ecologically friendly procedures (the practice of profits versus the theory of benefits); (b) lack of short term gain in life cycle costing (practitioners want instant incentives); and (c) mostly, because it is not a legal requirement for the vast majority of municipalities. Keywords: Green management, green business practices, barriers toward green management, encouragement & incentives for green management, LEED Certification. RESUMEN La gestión ambiental sostenible y el tornarse ecológico no es tan claro ni factible como lo pregona la prensa. Mientras...

...Green Depot: The Eco-Friendly Way Kaplan University In this report I will put into words my interpretations of the marketing mix of Green Depot. “The marketing mix is the set of controllable, tactical marketing tools that the firm blends to product the response it wants in the target market” (Armstrong & Kotler, 2010, p. 81). Marketing Mix Analysis Overview Green Depot is the eco-friendly version of Home Depot. Providing “environmentally friendly and sustainable building products, services and home solutions” (Green Depot, About us 2005). I would analyze the marketing mix of Green Depot as adequate. The company’s primary goal is incorporate “green living and building in communities so it is easy, affordable and gratifying” (Green depot, 2005). I choose only adequate because green living although in the future may be affordable currently it is in fact a bit expensive. This company was founded in 2005 by Sarah Beatty her purpose to make green services readily available and easily adopted into standard construction operations was successful. Green Depot has created a unique filter to gage whether or not the products are in fact “green”. This filter focuses on five categories air quality, local, social responsibility, energy conservation. By use of their “proprietary filter” Green Depot has been set apart from the greenwashing stigma “a form of corporate misrepresentation where the company will present a green public image and publicize green initiatives that...
