...What Grinds My Gears I’m sitting at my school’s cafeteria minding my own business while I read the newspaper. It’s seven o’clock Monday morning and I am wondering why I have to be eating breakfast so early instead of being able to sleep in. I’m also in a bad mood because they decided not to serve any cereal at breakfast and god knows I love my cereal in the morning. Instead I have to settle for an American breakfast: sausage and bacon with some eggs as well. After I am done with my breakfast I check the time to see if I have to go to class yet. Seven forty-five, still fifteen minutes before I really have to go. So I grab the New-York Times and decide to catch up on the daily news. However, when I come back from getting the newspaper the group of five students who sat next to me decided that they did not have to pick up their trays with everything on them. I get a little annoyed that they could care less about something as simple as common courtesy. I decide to watch how many students actually pick up everything after they finish their breakfast. I am flabbergasted to see that roughly every one out of five students leave everything. This is when I really get angry. People that have no patience or common courtesy really grind my gears. People always seem to be in a rush and in concordance fail to have even the slightest trace of patience. The most common example of this that I experience is when I drive. In Miami people always seem to be in a rush. There is never enough time...

...Being driven by something can mean a variety of things. When having something that “drives” one, it can be in terms of motivation and determinedness or annoyance and irritation. When I think about what drives me, I feel all of these things. I have found things that motivate me and things that also simply just grind my gears. Having something that drives me in terms of motivation is an essential thing for me. Being a college student, sometimes I get stressed and depressed with the obstacles I am presented with. Personally, when I start to struggle with my grades and add that in with my financial issues, I tend to want to give up. However, I am reminded by what drives me to not quit and to push myself so I can get my degree and graduate. What drives me to push through anything I may encounter in school and in life is my mother....

...think old people shouldn’t drive because they cause the most accidents, they are very slow when driving, and they put their own and other lives at risk. They are getting to be a big problem and I think that they should be stopped. How many more people must be hurt until our government finally comes to its senses. The first reason why old people shouldn’t drive is because they cause the most accidents. In my research I found that the elderly 75-85years old cause more accidents than young and reckless adults 16-21(U.S.A. Today). The pro-elderly might say that the elderly don’t know any better and that the government doesn’t require you to take a driving test once you become a senior but whose really to blame (U.S.A Today). The elderly shouldn’t be driving in the first place. Statistics state that as you get older you lose focus and that exactly what is happening they aren’t paying attention (smart motorist). The second reason why the elderly shouldn’t drive is because they are very slow. The speed limit clearly says 65 and they are driving at 15. It really grinds my gears. Studies say that the reason they drive slow is because they take medications that can make them sleepy or drowsy and they have little physical activity (smart motorist). So it’s not completely their fault. But that doesn’t make an excuse for the problem. They shouldn’t drive if they know that they are taking medications that make them sleepy or could make them sleepy. The last reason why old people shouldn’t...

...After spending much of my childhood growing up in New York City I have acquired the distaste for insanity. No, not the mentally ill kind or the crazy of every type you find simply walking the streets of the city but the people who exhibit insane behavior by doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results, a definition commonly attributed to Albert Einstein. Although there is no evidence that Einstein ever said that phrase or any combination of words that resemble anything close to that, journalists and politicians who use the phrase always seem to need to attribute it to an icon. The fixation on who said the words superseding the power of the words themselves bothers me, such behavior is one of the many types of...

...English 101 student Michael Mitchell English 101 27 March 2013 A Blessing in Disguise My family had planned a trip to telluride, Colorado, for spring break. I had been anticipating it for months and it finally came. We packed the car with all of our suitcases and strapped our skis and snowboards to the top of the car. I hopped in the car, put on my headphones, and got prepared for the long journey that awaited. We drove a total of seven hours on roads that snaked through mountains and roads that were long, flat, and looked as if they had no end. As we started getting closer to Colorado I started seeing snow on the side of the road and began fantasizing about shredding down the mountain on my board. I couldn’t wait to launch off the huge jumps I had heard about and try new tricks. I day dreamed for the rest of the car ride, not responding to anyone or anything. The car stopped, but I was still day dreaming and didn’t notice until my sister slammed the car door. When I got out of the car I was immediately in awe of how nice the cabin was that we were staying at. I pushed my sister out of the way and quickly ran to go find the best room in the house. After I got all of my luggage in the room, I looked out the window and saw that the cabin was directly on one of the ski runs. This meant that I could go out the back door and be on the slopes. No walking, no lines, and no carrying my gear from the parking lot to the mountain. Once everyone got situated we put on our snow jackets...

...mechanics (APA style, etc.) of writing a research paper, and more on what it takes mentally and emotionally to not only survive, but actually thrive, in the process of completing so demanding an assignment. (And let’s face it: you will have many across your academic career.) I rely here on not only what I have gleaned from over 35 years of grading university-level research papers, but also from my own ongoing research and writing. So, what works? Here are seven keys to mastering research papers: 1. There’s No Wasted Motion As I reflect back over my research career, beginning with my master’s thesis and doctoral dissertation, I am aware of having read many more books, articles, and other resources than I eventually ended up using in my final research manuscripts. I also recall the multiple drafts I’ve written, only to “transcend and include” them (a developmental psychology term) with each successive draft. The question is, was all that reading and writing, much of which didn’t find its way into the final research paper, nothing more than a colossal waste of time and energy? “No!” is my unequivocal response. Every article I read, or...

It's whether or not our work fulfills us." Kobe's 'work' is the game of basketball, it fulfills him. He loves the game so much he wrote a poem about it and shared it with the world. “As a six-year-old boy Deeply in love with you I never saw the end of the tunnel. I only saw myself Running out of one.” “And so I ran. I ran up and down every court After every loose ball for you. ...Power by the Wind 1 Power by the Wind Power by the Wind covers the topic of wind energy. There is a large sector in our country that believes wind energy is an excellent alternative resource, including myself. There is also a group of people that believe that the wind turbines that are used to generate wind energy is a bad idea because they obstruct the natural view, causes death to birds, and generates noise pollution. They also argue that wind energy is not a dependable source of energy because the wind does not blow continually. I will explain the long history of wind energy and the methods that have been used to harness it. I will also look at wind energy from a positive and negative perspective. A Long History: The human relationship with the wind has been a long one with the use of sailing ships and windmills. For centuries past the wind was used as the main power source for sailing ships. The use of windmills seems to have started with the Persians for grinding grain (between 500 and 900 A.D.). Windmills started appearing in Europe around the time of the Crusades (1096 -1270). The European design is very different from the Persian one Power by the Wind 2 and there is an ongoing debate whether the Europeans developed the windmill themselves or the Crusaders had taken the idea back to Europe. The earliest windmills found in Europe were a post mill construction. The main structure of the windmill sits on top of a post and...
