...The Farewell Address by George Washington set certain principles that will make Americans be a successful and violence free country which was agreed by Mercy Otis Warren although Felix Grundy, on the other hand, disagrees by the principles that Washington wanted. Felix Grundy opposes on the Farewell Address by trying to conquer Canada and making the country more powerful while cutting connections between Canadians and Indians at the same time. As stated, “I am willing to receive the Canadians as adopted brethren; it will have beneficial political effects; it will preserve the equilibrium of the Government” (Foner 161). It shows that Grundy wanted to make the America politically powerful while preserving the Government’s balance by inducing...

...Learning to Win: Sports, Education, And Social Changes in Twentieth-Century North Carolina published by Pamela Gundy focuses on the state of North Carolina and discusses issues such as race, gender, and class that are controversial in education and athletics. Grundy combines many different aspects throughout her book by using stories of other people to explain her central point. Grundy uses personal stories from coaches and athletes such as Walter Lingle, John C. Lendon, and David Thompson. In doing so the book contains an abundance of historical information which is not always shared with the public. The book is neither for or against combining sports and education but just states the facts and different sides of the story. This book holds...

...Journal of Change Management Vol. 5, No. 4, 369 –380, December 2005 Organisational Change Management: A Critical Review RUNE TODNEM BY Queen Margaret University College, Edinburgh, UK ABSTRACT It can be argued that the successful management of change is crucial to any organisation in order to survive and succeed in the present highly competitive and continuously evolving business environment. However, theories and approaches to change management currently available to academics and practitioners are often contradictory, mostly lacking empirical evidence and supported by unchallenged hypotheses concerning the nature of contemporary organisational change management. The purpose of this article is, therefore, to provide a critical review of some of the main theories and approaches to organisational change management as an important first step towards constructing a new framework for managing change. The article concludes with recommendations for further research. KEY WORDS : Critical review; theories and approaches Introduction Change management has been defined as ‘the process of continually renewing an organization’s direction, structure, and capabilities to serve the ever-changing needs of external and internal customers’ (Moran and Brightman, 2001: 111). According to Burnes (2004) change is an ever-present feature of organisational life, both at an operational and strategic level. Therefore, there should be no doubt regarding the importance to any organisation of...

...Seven bodies were exhumed with toxicological analysis reports indicating large amounts of morphine was present in the systems of his victims (Saferstein, 2015). Dr. Harold Shipman was arrested in 1998, killing between 215 to 260 of the patients that was under his care by injecting them with amounts of painkillers that was deadly. A thorough investigation had proven that Dr. Shipman had made some changes in his patient‘s medical records but to no avail. Dr. Shipman masqueraded as a family physician with a caring bedside manner, but under that disguise was a cold-blooded killer. Angela Woodruff, the daughter of the murder victim, Kathleen Grundy, played a vital role in bringing the murderous Dr. Harold Shipman to justice. Angela Woodruff did not believe any of the explanations given for the death of her mother. Mrs.Kathleen Grundy, a widow, who was 81 at the time of her demise, was also active and wealthy. Dr. Shipley tried to convince Angela Woodruff not to get an autopsy but failed. At first, Angela Woodruff happened to be a lawyer, who was over her mother’s affairs. Angela had later found out that another will was in...

Change 15: 213–229 (2006) Published online in Wiley InterScience (www.interscience.wiley.com) DOI: 10.1002/jsc.764 Strategic Change Rethinking and reinventing Michael Porter’s five forces model Tony Grundy Cranfield School of Management, UK Michael Porter’s five competitive forces model has been a most influential model within business schools but has perhaps had less appeal to the practising manager outside of an MBA and certain short business school courses. In this article it is argued that whilst there are a number of reasons why the model has not achieved greater currency, most importantly it can be developed a lot further. The paper looks at a number of important opportunities for using Porter’s model in an even more practical way, including: mapping the competitive forces, which can vary significantly over market and competitive terrain and within the same industry; understanding its dynamics; prioritizing the forces; doing macro analysis of the sub-drivers of each of the five forces; exploring key interdependencies, both between and within each force. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Introduction When Michael Porter conceived the five competitive forces model, it propelled strategic management to the very heart of the management agenda. The framework became a centrepiece of texts on business strategy and strategic management, and essential examination material on MBA and similar courses globally. But what has become of his original five competitive...

...An essay on Organizational Change APA Style Submitted to: Sir Syed Ali Mujahid Submitted by: Asad Iftikhar Bhatti (11083) An organization is a social group which distributes tasks for a collective goal. The word itself is derived from the Greek word organon, itself derived from the better-known word ergon - as we know `organ` - and it means a compartment for a particular job. There are a variety of legal types of organizations, including: corporations, governments, non-governmental organizations, international organizations, armed forces, charities, not-for-profit corporations, partnerships, cooperatives, and universities. A hybrid organization is a body that operates in both the public sector and the private sector, simultaneously fulfilling public duties and developing commercial market activities. As a result the hybrid organization becomes a mixture of a government and a corporate organization. In the social sciences, organizations are the object of analysis for a number of disciplines, such as sociology, economics, political science, psychology, management, and organizational communication. The broader analysis of organizations is commonly referred to as organizational structure, organizational studies, organizational behavior, or organization analysis. A number of different perspectives exist, some of which are compatible: * From a process-related perspective, an organization is viewed as an entity is being (re-)organized, and the focus is on the organization as a...

...change has been a necessary process during the organizational development which is mentioned as a planned change process, managed from the top, taking into account both the technical and the human sides of the organization by Schien(1992). The ex-British Prime Minister named Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881) (B. Senior and S. Swailes, 2010) explained that ‘change is inevitable in a progressive country’, he also considers that ‘only change is constant’. Being proved by Collins (1998), Huff and Huff (2000), Organization change is one of perennial issues in organization and management theory. However, the type of organizational change is not unique, Strebel (1996) illustrates that change may be a constant but it is not always the same, in addition, Grundy (1993) indicates that there are three varieties of change including Discontinuous, ‘smooth’ incremental and ‘bumpy’ incremental change which are separated by the rate of change (Figure 1). Some authors believe that organizational change can be managed and planned. Lewin is the father of planned change approach which is described as an “ethical and humanist approach to change” (Hughes, 2010). Also, by using Lewin’s planned approach to change model (1951), Lunenburg C F...

...Conceptual Framework Most research reports cast the problem statement within the context of a conceptual or theoretical framework.4 A description of this framework contributes to a research report in at least two ways because it (1) identifies research variables, and (2) clarifies relationships among the variables. Linked to the problem statement, the conceptual framework “sets the stage” for presentation of the specific research question that drives the investigation being reported. For example, the conceptual framework and research question would be different for a formative evaluation study than for a summative study, even though their variables might be similar. Scholars argue that a conceptual or theoretical framework always underlies a research study, even if the framework is not articulated.5 This may seem incongruous, because many research problems originate from practical educational or clinical activities. Questions often arise such as “I wonder why such an event did not [or did] happen?” For example, why didn't the residents' test-interpretation skills improve after they were given feedback? There are also occasions when a study is undertaken simply to report or describe an event, e.g., pass rates for women versus men on high-stakes examinations such as the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1. Nevertheless, it is usually possible to construct at least a brief theoretical rationale for the study. The rationale in the USMLE example may be, for...

...What Happened To The “SLAVE” Who Wrote The Letter Everyone is Talking About Added by blacklikemoi on February 6, 2012. Saved under Black History, Inconceivable Tags: Big Spring, Colonel Anderson, David Lee Child, Dayton Daily Journal, George Carter, girls, Jordan, Jourdon Anderson, Lydia Maria Child, shooting A letter written by a freed slave to his former master has surfaced again after almost 150 years and is creating a lot of buzz. The letter was written by former slave Jourdon Anderson to his master Colonel P.H. Anderson in August 1865. According to Letters of Note, Colonel Anderson had written his former slave, asking him to return to work as a freeman on the farm on which he had spent 30 years as a human tool. The former slave’s response to his former master’s request surfaces again after the book, The Freedmen’s Book, compiled by Lydia Maria Child almost 150 years ago, was reissued this month. Child was born in 1802. Her husband David Lee Child, was an abolitionist who also campaigned for Indian rights and women’s rights. Jourdon, in the letter replied to his master that he and his family had moved from Big Spring, Tennessee to Ohio, after being emancipated and now he had a job and was being paid, for the first time, for his labor. The letter starts out heartbreaking and somber but by the letter’s end, it is revealed as one of the great, all-time, understated sarcastic missives, with the final sentence, “Say howdy to George Carter, and thank him...
