I. Introduction This research is about a pastor, Mr. Richard G. Doromal, who is originally a Medical Technology student and preferred to be a pastor rather than being a professional Medical Technologist. Discussed here is his life and how he became a pastor, his relationship to other people and how God transformed his way of living so as his spiritual life.
II. Pastor Richard G. Doromal: A True Disciple of Christ People may get surprised to know that their current job is not their calling. More people change jobs and careers during the course of their life. It is because their job is not their calling. A job is just an instrument to getting and knowing your calling in life. Your job may be actually close to have your calling but sometimes not, still depending on your destiny. Some people measure success by the amount of money acquired through his/her job, but God is not concerned about money, He is concerned with how you’re doing at the task He has given to you. It is not important how much money or what your status is in your life in advancing to the Kingdom of heaven. Changing career and choosing your real calling in life is never wrong in the eyes of a true disciple.
A. Disciple
A disciple is a person who believes in and helps to spread another’s teachings. A disciple is a fully devoted follower of Christ, a person who is really sold out for the Lord. They are the one who are ready to do what God told them to do. They don’t compromise and they are very loyal to their leader. Disciples are committed to passionate spiritually. They always attend fellowship and listen to God’s teachings and they make their prayer life stronger. Another is they are committed to cell life. They make sure to meet each other every day to share the goodness of the Lord. Also, they are devoted to the church. In doing these things, they became disciples and made this as their lifestyles. B. Discipleship
Discipleship is the act of following and learning from a teacher, especially Jesus. It is about sharing life to others people. We serve God by serving others. Real disciples/servants make themselves available to serve. They do what is needed even when it’s inconvenient for them. Another is real disciples pay attention to needs. They look ways on how to help others. Real disciples do their best with what they have. God expects you to do what you can, with what you have, wherever you are. Another action is real disciples do every task with equal dedication. Whatever they do, they do it with all their heart. Real servants too, are faithful to their ministry. They finish their tasks, fulfill their responsibilities, keep their promises and complete their commitments. Last but not the least, real disciples maintain low profile. They don’t promote or call attention to themselves. Instead, they humble themselves and do what God told them to do.
C. Being a Pastor A pastor is the one who serves the church in the ministry of preaching, teaching, and pastoral care. Pastors are the one who testifies the word of the Lord. Sometimes they are called as “vision bearers.” By the definition of the word pastor, these servants of God are called to “shepherd the flock,” which means they are entrusted with the responsibility of caring for the spiritual needs of the congregation. Even in small church these responsibilities are numerous. As the primary teacher of God’s word to the people, most pastors spend hours and hours researching and studying scripture in order to rightly understand the Bible so that it can be taught in a meaningful and applicable way. Besides preaching and teaching, pastors do a great deal of spiritual counseling, they make hospital visits, pray for the sick, train and disciple church leaders, and the list goes on and on. Pastors must control teaching to discipling. They must know how to mentor to produce multitudes. Another, pastors should shift from sermonizing to modeling; they must be a good role model to their people. Next, many pastors discipline people based on activities not on relationship. Pastors must develop relationship with the one whom they disciple. Last, pastors must shift from attracting people to deploying them, equip the crowd.
D. Pastor Richard Doromal to His Disciples
Pastor Richard G. Doromal didn’t fail in his role in playing as a disciple and as a pastor. He is a very remarkable friend, spiritual father, mentor, and of course, coach. He helps not just in developing his disciples as good leaders, but also to mold and improve his disciples’ confidence, great courage, sincerity, and open-mindedness towards discipleship. To his 12 (disciples), his teaching is perfect. He does what God wants his disciples to learn. He has a way of seeking his 12’s weaknesses to make them stronger than what they were for them to be able to face life’s challenges. He taught them how to reach out to people and to the lost, discipling them and sharing everybody the word of God. Pastor Richard possesses the father-like image to his disciples. We are made to be Christ-like so we must know how to win souls and make disciples. First, we must see what Jesus saw. Keep our eyes open and let yourself to see what God wanted you to see. Second, we must feel what Jesus felt. Jesus have the love for others and compassion to people. Third, we must pray what Jesus prayed. Lastly, we must do what Jesus did which is, he reached out to people, changed their lives for the best and made them disciples. Pastor Richard Doromal looks for one’s willingness to serve God after all the training and discipleship. He himself is devoted to Christ and he has the great willingness to serve God through producing more and more disciples to also serve God themselves. He is great and getting greater in praising and worshipping the Lord. He is anointed and blessed to have the capability of handling 12 disciples, at the same time preaching and serving the church and its people. E. The Accurate Lifestyle of a Christian As Christians, we are the models for God so it is important that we have the lifestyle that is good in the eyes of God. It’s impossible to have a sinless life but we still have the capability of living Christ-like and reach out to the souls of the lost. We should always remember that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and we should respect them for it is God’s creation. Let’s not put poisonous materials into our bodies nor abuse them. It may be hard to determine the do’s and dont’s in taking care of our body but prayer should always be done for the guidance of God in the things that we are not sure of. God doesn’t want us to have harsh and mean life so we better take care of ourselves. F. Knowing the Calling of God When you find your calling in life, nervousness or worry may also come because we put right up there with knowing God’s will or knowing our real purpose in life. Part of this confusion comes because some people use these terms in other ways but others define them in specific ways. Things get more confusing when we use the words vocation, ministry, and career. It can be clear to us if we accept the basic definition of calling: “A calling is God’s personal, individual invitation to carry out the unique task he has for you.” Being called by God, we must possess the kind of life God wants us to have. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to one hope when you were called—one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and it all (Eph 4:2-6). G. A Pastor’s Way of Communication Communicating to other people is also a way of expressing what and who you are. Pastors have different ways of communication. They stop and listen. One must always take the time to stop and be there to listen to another. Having this attitude will help in creating better relationship with much more understanding and trust. Having the relationship in discipleship requires communication from the disciple to the disciple. When we are having trouble in arguing with our significant other, it is true that we’re often so afraid of not being heard.
Pastors tend to force themselves to hear. Most of the time, people get themselves too busy doing their works, to a pastor, being busy in planning and organizing church activities that somehow leads to exhaustion or stress. They actually get tired of doing their jobs but fortunately, they have the wisdom to force themselves to listen and just be there to halo without being upset or doubtful.
Pastors know that humor and playfulness usually help. One doesn’t have to be funny in order to use humor and playfulness in everyday conversations. They just need to use the sense of humor they have and try to inject it into more of their communication with people, Humor helps lighten everyday frustration and helps put things into perspective.
Pastors also know that communication is more than just talking. It can also be done in other ways such as sending messages or others as long as they are keeping themselves in touch. We must also adapt these ways of communication in order for us to learn patience just like pastors do, especially in reaching out to others and in discipleship.
H. Pastor Richard Doromal’s Impact to the Church
Pastor Richard Doromal had a very remarkable impact to the church—GCGK—and its people. Firstly, Pastor Richard inspires people through his preaching. He shares his past experiences and also the things he had learn from those experiences. Secondly, he makes it certain that his disciples are also doing what he himself does in his discipleships and trainings. He does what a pastor should really do; he develops leaders and makes them Christ-like. He is there to help during difficult times, and he leaves a very wonderful legacy to people—to change for God.
III. Conclusion Changing career is never a hard task especially when you’re conscious that you are being called by God. Pastor Richard G. Doromal never regret choosing his profession as pastor rather than being a professional Medical Technologist though he encountered many challenges in life, in which he learned a lot. He was able to let people understand what and how a true disciple of Christ acts and say. He was a perfect mentor in discipleship with the Christ-like image model to his people in GCGK (Glorious Church of God’s Kingdom), his church located in Marikina, which is currently growing fast. Everything in his life was very simple until he let God be in control and this very simple life became truly special, especially when he started sharing the good news to others whom he knew needed God in their life. Today, he is working on making the church grow bigger at the same time, producing more disciples to let the good news spread not only in Marikina, but also to Philippines entirely.
