2. Les implications du choix du segment sur :

- Le produit : Si la segmentation est trop précise ou trop focalisée sur un marché, le risque serait de limiter fortement le potentiel du produit et donc passer à côté d’un large public avec des attentes parfois légèrement différentes. Il est donc essentiel de connaitre le potentiel du produit afin d’élargir un maximum et de positionner le bon produit pour le bon segment, par exemple le Orange Tab et le Red Tab.

- Le prix : le positionnement dans un ou plusieurs segments, entrainera une modification de stratégie au niveau du prix. Il est essentiel, afin de définir le bon prix, de savoir dans quelle gamme de produits nous désirons nous positionner, pour quel public et quel sera l’importance de l’image de la marque et de la qualité.

- Le canal de distribution : On observe (annexe1) que le segment visé par Levi’s (prix initial 40-50$ et 50-60$) devait idéalement se situer dans un canal de distribution type jeanserie pour les femmes, et grands magasins ou magasins spécialisés pour les hommes. Mais vu que Levis est également présent dans les grands magasins et mass retailers, les politiques agressives sur les prix de ces derniers ont fait descendre le prix de vente moyen des jeans Levi’s. Cela est un exemple de l’influence négative sur le prix de vente d’un positionnement voulant viser l’entièreté du ou des segments ciblés à travers tous les différents canaux de distribution.

3. L’évolution du marché :

De 1853 à 1980 les ventes augmentent, le marché s’élargit de plus en plus avec de nouveaux modèles qui apparaissent, on quitte le monde du « vêtement résistant pour le travail » à un vêtement plus « fashion » ou « sport wear ». Le produit devient mixte (homme et femme) et l’élargissement est complet avec des gammes low-cost et de nombreuses marques visant le produit de « luxe ». De 1996 à 2002, le marché s’est davantage développé dans le « casual ».

De 1996 à 2000, le marché est passé de 28,5 millions d’unités vendues à 25,1 millions, ce qui représente une baisse de 12%. Cette baisse a été plus marquée chez les femmes (14,3%) que chez les hommes (9,9%), lié à une variation plus rapide des modes.

Au départ le marché était fort concentré entre deux sociétés (Levi’s et Wrangler), par la suite la concurrence s’est fortement accrue dans tous les segments. Les prix n’ont alors cessés de diminuer ces 5 dernières années (1996 à 2000), lié à un positionnement plus féroce des grands magasins et mass retailers.

De nombreux grands magasins et mass retailer possèdent maintenant leur propre marque de jeans, généralement low-cost mais surtout fortement inspirée des collections des grandes marques. Ces marques sont présentes à côté des grandes marques dans les rayonnages, grandes marques qui servent à attirer du trafic de consommateurs.

5. Gestion par Levi Strauss de son portefeuille de marques au Canada depuis 1982 et impact sur la marque GWG :

Levis Strauss Canada (LSC) a cherché à se différencier par rapport à la concurrence en se focalisant sur les marchés porteurs du milieu et haut gamme en développant le « Levi’s Red Tab » (prix de vente plus élevé, plus de choix et coloris et nouveautés saisonnières) et le « Levi’s Orange Tab » (prix de vente moins élevé, moins de choix et coloris et haute qualité des tissus).
Après une série de mauvais positionnement, GWG s’est recentré sur le marché masculin avec sa nouvelle ligne Company avec comme caractéristiques : qualité et prix bas…
LSC s’est fortement focalisé sur la croissance de sa marque Levi’s et la marque Company devait automatiquement profiter de ces efforts. Mais Levi’s a finalement fait concurrence à GWG car présent dans les mêmes canaux de distribution et les ventes n’ont cessées de décliner. Aucun montant n’a no plus été investit en publicité ou innovation et la marque a finalement été cédée, sous licence, a un fabricant de jeans canadien qui n’a pas réussi à limiter la chute des ventes.

6. Recommandations pour GWG :

Au vu du nombre d’unité de jeans vendus et le plan financier de Mrs. Klee, la marque continue à être rentable à hauteur d’un bénéfice d’un peu plus de $300 000, pour un volume d’environ 220 000 unités.
Nous proposons de :
- Mettre fin au contrat de licence afin d’économiser le prix de 8% sur prix de vente (220.000 jeans x 25$ X8%= 440.000$) ainsi que de mettre fin à la fonction support de licence chez Levi’s : économie 80.000$

- De positionner la marque sur un marché de niche : Cibler les Hommes « ruraux » (40+) en se focalisant sur la haute qualité des tissus, le confort et en réduisant le choix. GWG devient une marque positionnée dans le segment « milieu de gamme fourchette basse ».

Le jeans GWG sera vendu sur le circuit de distribution des retailers « ruraux » par le biais de vendeurs indépendants payé à la commission.

...philosopher Socrates lived and breathed for justice. He ironically died for unjust reasons of course but he still lived for what was right. Two thousand four hundred years after his death however, the Nazis managed to destroy the very essence of justice, and life, for millions of their victims. In Auschwitz, as with all concentration camps, justice was non-existent. There are very important things missing from Auschwitz that Socrates would have considered essential for justice to exist. Let us start by confirming above all things that the main point of punishment is a consequence of wrong doing: the degree of punishment agreeing with the degree of crime (hopefully but not always the case). That is the basic idea of justice in my mind. For Primo Levi and twelve million others of the Nazi’s victims in the concentration camps, this was most certainly not the case. Yes the Nazi’s did have political and criminal prisoners that somewhat earned their spot there but the large majority of the prisoners never did anything wrong whatsoever. This is the first and most clear way in which justice was destroyed. Their crime was existing, whether they Jewish, gypsy, handicap, or what have you. On top of that, the crimes against humanity that the Nazis committed were so horrible, so grotesque and unspeakable, that the only deserving victims of such treatment were the ones responsible for it. Originally titled If This Is a Man, Levi expresses captivating images and vivid emotions of his experience of inhumane treatment. ...The Gray Zone by Primo Levi – Summary In the chapter, the gray zone, the author Primo Levi describes the human relationships inside the Lager. In describing the gray zone, Levi discusses the different roles of prisoners assigned by the Nazi.
