Hamlet: Is Hamlet A Smart Person?

Submitted By

Hamlet is a very smart person. In some parts it may feel as though he may not be smart at all he is. One of the moments in the play that stood out the most is when he delayed Claudius’ death. This showed that he wanted to make sure that he would have all the facts before acting on an impulse. Although the ghost showed Hamlet that his uncle killed his father Hamlet delayed in order to make sure that was true. That shows his intelligence by not jumping to conclusions. Any unintelligent person would instantly kill Claudius and would not be able to make sure they were doing the right thing. As Coleridge stated, “Shakespeare wished to impress upon us the truth that action is the chief end of existence” (Chan). This being stated Shakespeare wanted

Why Is Hamlet Mad

...Hamlet is a young adult from the sixteen hundreds, he is going through a very tough time in his life. His father has been killed and is back as a ghost. His mother is now married to his uncle. Hamlet is known as the person who goes mad during this play. Everyone has turned against him, the only option he had to maybe save himself was to act mad. Hamlet proves he is not actually mad because he talks to other people perfectly normal. He puts on his act only when he needs to, which is around people that he can not trust. He is afraid they will tell the king the things he says that is why he acts mad. Hamlet despises the king, his uncle father. Hamlet once said, “But my uncle-father and aunt-mother are deceived.” Hamlet despises their relationship and wants it to end. Hamlet is the only one that can talk to the ghost of Old Hamlet. The ghost told Hamlet “I’m the ghost of your father, doomed for a certain period of time to walk the earth at night, while during the day I’m trapped in the fires of purgatory until I’ve done penance for my past sins.” Admitting it is Hamlets father Hamlet is talking to. He is the only one that can talk to the ghost because the ghost only wants to talk to him. Others explained by saying they could see him but could not talk to him, because he only wanted to talk to his son....

Comparing Hamlet's Play To The Play

...Hamlet is one of the first plays by Shakespeare that I have ever read. I read the play as a senior in high school, but never watched the movie until this semester in class. The vocabulary in the play is different than what is commonly used now, making it hard to understand. But, the book does give definitions to the old English terminology. From what I can see there are many changes made from the play to the movie. For example, in the play, the late king talked to the guards, but in the movie, he talked to Hamlet himself. Also, the play never elaborated on the funeral of King Hamlet, it starts with the ghost talking to the guards, but the movie begins with the funeral with Gertrude crying. Throughout the story, Hamlet pretends to be crazy,...

Hamlet and One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest

...Many questions have been asked if Hamlet, McMurphy and Chief Bromden are crazy or sane. Hamlet is the main character from a play by William Shakespeare called Hamlet. McMurphy and Chief are characters from a novel by Ken Kesey called One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. There have been many scenes in the play where Hamlet might seams crazy but without a doubt he is sane. Even though McMurphy do some crazy things he is definitely not crazy because he is aware of his actions and he does all these insane things just to make the Nurse Ratched mad. Chief Bromden’s character can easily be identified as sane because he knows how to stay out of trouble and from getting electric shock treatments. Hamlet says to Horatio “How strange or odd soe'er I bear myself, As I perchance hereafter shall think meet to put an antic disposition on,” (I. v. 172-174). This quote is said right after when the Ghost tells Hamlet that his uncle Claudius has murdered his father. Hamlet plans on pretending to be a crazy so he can get revenge on Claudius. He also mentions to Horatio that to keep this to himself as a secret. This is perfect quote to proof Hamlet is not crazy and puts on an act as a madman. When Hamlet talks to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, he tells them in a way that he would be portray as a madman that he has been acting insane. “I am but mad north-north-west: when the wind is southerly I know a hawk from a handsaw.” (II. ii. 132-133). He also let them know that their true reason for visiting...

...perceived by people. In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Hamlet seeks out revenge on Claudius, his uncle turned step-father who killed his father and is now trying to act innocent. Although the characters believe in Claudius’ innocence and furthermore that Hamlet is crazy, it is in the final interaction between Hamlet and Claudius that all can see Claudius’ guilt. It is a natural response for some to react in fear with violence, as it is part of our human nature which can be seen through Hamlet’s driving desire to kill Claudius, his impulsive, accidental murder of Polonius, and in Claudius’ initial murder of Hamlet’s father. In the start of this play, Hamlet’s father comes to him as a ghostly figure and explains his unfortunate murder. After further explaining to Hamlet that he must avenge his unrighteous death, the ghostly fallen father fades into the darkness of the night. Hamlet’s storms away from the scene shocked, enraged and confused about the news he has just heard. His first instinct is to kill Claudius, to avenge his father’s death, as he has just been instructed to do. His father’s ghost says, “Revenge his foul and most unnatural murther. murther most foul, as in the best it is; But this most foul, strange, and unnatural.” Although death is most obviously frowned upon, his loyalty and honor to his father is something to also look at here. His first instinct is to react in violence, however his motives seem to be more pure than what is acted on. Hamlet feels that if he does this, it...

Hamlet

...the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, I utilized much time in comparing and contrasting whether or not the young people of 2014 relate to Hamlet. There are some thoughts that had come across me as to why I could see some similarities of Hamlet to the young people of 2014, but in the end, I realized there was a lot more to Hamlet that I have not seen in any children of the present day. Therefore, I do not believe the young people of 2014 relate to Hamlet. William Shakespeare was the most influential writer in English literature. He was born in 1564 to a successful middle-class glove maker in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. Shakespeare attended grammar school, but his formal education proceeded no further. In 1582 he married an older woman, Anne Hathaway, and had three children with her. Around 1590 he left his family behind and traveled to London to work as an actor and playwright. Public and critical success quickly followed, and Shakespeare eventually became the most popular playwright in England and part-owner of the Globe. The play of Hamlet is mainly about a boy named Hamlet who is trying to avenge his father’s death. Throughout the play he has many thoughts and suspicions of the cause and of the murderer but being as contemplative and thoughtful by nature, he holds back from entering a state of craziness and madness. The two watchmen discover the ghost that walks the ramparts of Elsinore Castle in Denmark and believe it to resemble the recently deceased King Hamlet, whose...

An Analysis of the Characters of Hamlet, Laertes and Fortinbras from William Shakespeare’s Hamlet

...Angela Romero 1226344 English IX Tim Keppel An analysis of the characters of Hamlet, Laertes and Fortinbras from William Shakespeare’s Hamlet In William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, revenge is the central topic, which breathes life into the play. As his main objective in life, Hamlet craves to avenge his father’s death, the king of Denmark, betrayed and killed by his own brother. Throughout the play, Hamlet comes across two other main characters in Shakespeare’s tragedy, Laertes and Fortinbras, whose fathers are also murdered. Even though there are differences between these 3 characters, this series of unfair deaths puts them in the same situation and makes them have aspects in common. Thus, the purpose of this essay is to compare and contrast Hamlet, Laertes and Fortinbras in terms of behavior, the honor for their beloved fathers, the desire to revenge their fathers’ death and their modus operandi of vengeance; as well as to explain the perception they have of each other. On one hand, Hamlet, the prince of Denmark, is characterized by his eloquent behavior, his philosophical thinking, which constantly leads him to questions that cannot be answered easily, such as his famous one “to be, or not to be”. He is smart and lets others think he’s just mad. One of his other characteristics are his constant thoughts about existence and the duties of a man. “What is a man, if his chief good and market of his time be but to sleep and feed? A beast, no more.” “For there are actions...

...Character Analysis Hamlet Hamlet is an enigma. No matter how many ways critics examine him, no absolute truth emerges. Hamlet breathes with the multiple dimensions of a living human being, and everyone understands him in a personal way. Hamlet's challenge to Guildenstern rings true for everyone who seeks to know him: "You would pluck out the heart of my mystery." None of us ever really does. The conundrum that is Hamlet stems from the fact that every time we look at him, he is different. In understanding literary characters, just as in understanding real people, our perceptions depend on what we bring to the investigation. Hamlet is so complete a character that, like an old friend or relative, our relationship to him changes each time we visit him, and he never ceases to surprise us. Therein lies the secret to the enduring love affair audiences have with him. They never tire of the intrigue. The paradox of Hamlet's nature draws people to the character. He is at once the consummate iconoclast, in self-imposed exile from Elsinore Society, while, at the same time, he is the adulated champion of Denmark — the people's hero. He has no friends left, but Horatio loves him unconditionally. He is angry, dejected, depressed, and brooding; he is manic, elated, enthusiastic, and energetic. He is dark and suicidal, a man who loathes himself and his fate. Yet, at the same time, he is an existential thinker who accepts that he must deal with life on its own terms, that he must choose to meet...

Othello the Shakespearean Tragic Hero

...Shakespeare’s tragic heroes, and other tragic heroes. A Tragic hero is usually a character that makes a mistake that leads to his failure, but a Shakespearean tragic hero is initially one, who is born noble, but not necessarily virtuous; there are some great aspects of personality that he has in excess which would often also be his weakness which creates a conflict for the character. His own destruction brings out the principle or moral of the play. Scholars argues that Othello is not a hero but a murder that commits a crime of passion, but just as every Shakespearean tragic characters, Othello is a person that has made an error of judgment, had a fatal flaw and was destined for defeat; which when combined with external forces, will bring on a tragedies like Julius Caesar, Hamlet, and Macbeth. Like many other characters in Shakespearean tragic plays, Othello is not a weak character nor is he a person of failure, but he is the captain of the Venice army, he is married to one of the most beautiful woman of Venice named Desdemona, and he is very well known even though he was of a different ethnicity. When Brabantio accuses him of putting a spell on his daughter Desdemona; in front of the Venetian senate, no one believes the charges because of his outstanding reputation "Here comes Brabantio and the valiant Moor,"(Othello 1.3.47). ...The role of Hamlet in Hamlet December 23,2011 Mr. Santin English 12-U Ethan D’Mello In many pieces of literature, it is the characters actions and words that have the greatest effect on the story line. In the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, there are many characters that are key to furthering the plot of the story, while keeping the reader engaged and interested in the book. These dramatic forces add suspense, irony, and mood which together makes for a good read. The characters who further these dramatic forces are Hamlet, Claudius, and Laertes. The character that furthers the dramatic forces the most is Hamlet. By examining the theme of love, their views on life and death, plus the act of scheming between Claudius, Hamlet, and Laertes, it will be evident that Hamlet furthers the dramatic force the most. Hamlet is a better character to reveal the theme of love when compared to Claudius. Hamlet encounters his father’s ghost and is told that his father’s brother Claudius had murdered him in his sleep. “O villain, villain, smiling, damned villain, My tables,- meet it is I set it down That one may smile, and smile, and be a villain, …So, uncle, there you are; now to my word; It is ‘adieu, adieu! Remember me.’ I have sworn’t” (Act 1, Scene 5, Lines 106-111). As a dutiful and loving son, Hamlet decides to avenge his father’s death. By doing so, he is accepting the task of going against all of Denmark and is planning to prove that his father was killed by the present...

...Home > Why Hamlet Delays His Revenge Why Hamlet Delays His Revenge (Excerpt from Quintessence of Dust: The Mystical Meaning of Hamlet) Kenneth Chan ... Hamlet is finally alone, and the stage is set for the soliloquy that gave rise to one of the most persistent mysteries in literature: Why does Hamlet delay his revenge? Hamlet Ay, so, God buy you. Now I am alone. Oh, what a rogue and peasant slave am I! Is it not monstrous that this player here, But in a fiction, in a dream of passion, Could force his soul so to his whole conceit1 That from her working all his visage wanned, Tears in his eyes, distraction in his aspect, A broken voice, and his whole function suiting With forms to his conceit? And all for nothing! For Hecuba! What's Hecuba to him, or he to Hecuba, That he should weep for her? What would he do Had he the motive and the cue for passion That I have? He would drown the stage with tears, And cleave the general ear with horrid speech, Make mad the guilty and appal the free,2 Confound the ignorant, and amaze indeed The very faculties of eyes and ears. Yet I, A dull and muddy-mettled3 rascal, peak Like John-a-dreams,4 unpregnant5 of my cause, And can say nothing--no, not for a king, Upon whose property and most dear life A damned defeat was made. He is 'universal,' meaning that everyone everywhere can relate to the kinds of problems or sufferings or emotions that the hero experiences. He has a 'tragic flaw' - this could be a personality trait (like greed, lust, ambition, jealousy, etc.), OR an error in judgement (a bad decision). This 'tragic flaw' leads to his downfall - usually ruins his career, reputation, power, etc. He is enlightened at the end of the story, meaning he realizes where he went wrong, he is humble, and he accepts the consequences . A tragic hero is a character in a work of fiction (often the protagonist) who commits an action or makes a mistake which eventually leads to his or her defeat. The idea of the tragic hero was created in ancient Greek tragedy and defined by Aristotle (and others). Usually, this includes the realization of the error (anagnorisis), which results in catharsis or epiphany. Aristotelian tragic hero Characteristics Aristotle once said that "A man doesn't become a hero until he can see the root of his own downfall." An Aristotelian tragic hero must have four characteristics: Nobility (of a noble birth) or wisdom (by virtue of birth). Hamartia (translated as flaw, mistake, or error, not an Elizabethan tragic flaw). A reversal of fortune(peripetia)...
