The book Hanging Captain Gordon by Ron Soodalter; this was an interesting book that caught my attention from the start. The book had shown some interesting details especially in the cover. This book reflects slavery and how Gordon was the only one hung for importing when many people were also doing the same thing. It grew on, because it gives the wonder of why this man is the only one getting punished for this.
This topic is interesting because it’s odd how he was the only person really hung for this when many other people were doing the same thing. They had a law passed not to import slaves but they never enforced it. Slavery is sad and cruel but how it changed from no African American being equal to everyone having the same rights with whatever skin color. We can talk and go to school with them, or even use the same restroom. We can all vote also, which is good because African Americans couldn’t before but since the amendment was passed everyone can now participate.
In Hanging Captain Gordon it starts off explaining about Gordon and his features how he’s short, 5 foot 5 inches, dark beard, small piercing eyes, and very repulsive. All on the very first page we got his features and how he was born February 6, 1826 in Portland and died February 21, 1862. Then it goes into how he got caught and how he got into the business. He got this thought from his father to smuggle slaves. His father was arrested for smuggling a slave into the country and the bail was 5 thousand dollars. He actually dropped everything to go to California to become rich. He became known as “lucky Nat” by his fellow traders.
I actually really like the final chapter because it shows how more and more slaves are being brought into the United States. They’re getting forced to work in cotton mills and plantations. They were bought and sold to people who will use them. And while getting used they
