Life is all about being happy. Happiness is the highest and final good at which all our actions are aimed. As mill claimed, to achieve this happiness we should balance between tranquillity and excitement, affection from others and for others, and a well-cultivated mind. All of us do different things in our lives but for the same ending result, self-satisfaction and happiness. We are all aiming for a good happy life in which pleasures outweigh the pain. But first we have to change what is inside us. Life is all about choices, if we choose to have a positive mind and thoughts, we will bring all the positive things into our lives. I think that this is the first and important step toward happiness. It is almost impossible to find someone who is hurting himself or making bad and harmful decisions in order to be sad. Happiness is not achieved by exaggeration; we should balance between the two extremes. Too much tranquility or too much excitement is harmful. Equilibrium between the two of them is perfect, which is called the ‘golden mean’. Tranquility and excitement are both necessary in our lives. For example, two classes of yoga and a party or diner out per week are good enough for a happy mind. As Mill says, “With much tranquility, many find that they can be content with very little pleasure. With much excitement, many can reconcile themselves to a considerable quantity of pain.” (3). If you choose to have a calm life maybe one day you will get bored, and a life full of events and excitement will make you tired. Both extremes don’t make life more enjoyable. Let’s imagine Linda, she has everything a woman dreams about, latest jewelry, bags, cars and a wonderful house in front of the beach, but she dropped out from school since high school and she doesn’t work. Every time she is with people and they ask her what is her degree or profession she answers “nothing”.
