...U.S History II Student name: Tran Thi My Ngoc Date: Apr 4th, 2012 Extra credit: Pearl Harbor Movie; Micheal Bay Overview of the movie: The Second World War is always an interesting topic in different fields such as dramatics, literature, etc. And of course in movie industry, it is not exceptional. There are many classical movies that surround this topic and Pearl Harbor is one of the most impressive one. In this movie, Micheal Bay focuses on the situation of the U.S in the first stage of WWII and the attack of Japanese on Pearl Harbor; the response of the U.S after this event and the love story of three main characters in the war time. Main ideas covered the movie: In the first stage of the war, the U.S maintained a position of isolationism. Focusing on trading weapons, they transported their products to the customers by non-American ships in order to avoid involving in the war. However, after Germany invaded Poland in 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt proposed the Lend-Lease Act to Congress for giving military aid to British without any repayment. At that time, the U.S, they did not seem to be neutral anymore. In the side of Japan, although the U.S was waiting for a peace treaty from them, they did not reply and prepare secretively for an attack to American battle fleet which Pearl Harbor was the target. They wanted to destroy the influence of the U.S in Asia. The attack took the Americans completely by surprise, it occurred on the early of Sunday in 1941 when...

...The Boy in The Striped Pajamas Bruno (Asa Butterfield) is the son of a Nazi officer. When his father receives a promotion, the young boy must move with his family away from his friends and his comfortable home in Berlin. He quickly becomes bored in his new surroundings in the countryside where he has no one to play with. From his bedroom window he can see a neighboring “farm” where all of the occupants wear “pajamas.” Hoping to play with the kids there, he can’t wait to go pay them a visit. Though his mother repeatedly warns him not to venture far from the house, his curiosity gets the best of him and he sneaks off to go exploring. It is on one of these adventures through the woods that he stumbles upon the barbed wire fence that encircles the neighboring concentration camp. Behind it he finds Shmuel (Jack Scanlon), a Jewish boy who is the same age as him. They quickly develop a friendship, interacting as much as they can while separated by the fence. Though they are both somewhat oblivious to the horrors taking place around them, they will both ultimately be affected by the events of the war. This film is very well done, yet difficult to watch. While there is no graphic violence depicted on the screen, the film is none the less heartbreaking. Because the story is told through the eyes of an 8-year-old boy, much of what we see seems mostly benign. Bruno simply doesn’t understand the things that he sees. Unfortunately for us, as adults, we do. All of the actors...

...Just think about what grows on food you forgot about on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator! Two places that are often overlooked for mold detection are the drain pan under the refrigerator and the icemaker. Mold inside ice cubes is a real turn off, so check the icemaker itself and the hoses behind the refrigerator. If you have a filter for the icemaker, check that also. Finally, check the dishwasher, especially around the bottom drain and the inside of the door. Mold can grow on the gasket and along the top and bottom edges of the door. Any appliance that uses water is also a potential harbor for mold. This even applies to small items such as coffeemakers. Make sure to check inside the water reservoir. The most common place for mold to grow is in the bathroom. Mold loves warm, humid places with lots of water! Begin looking in the bathtub or shower, as this is usually the first place mold will take up residence. Make sure to check from the floor to the ceiling. Next check under sinks and behind the toilet, any place water leaks or drips. If there is a window in the bathroom, be sure to check all around the window and the...

...Andre Trocme and Le Chambon Reflection The story of Andre Trocme and the peoples of Le Chambon is a truly an inspiring given the fact that they helped harbor many Jews from being persecuted. They are truly inspiring because from a religious perspective they have lived a part of the Christian faith that many people never will and as result their story will probably be read to future generations of those who are seeking to live a more fulfilled Christian life. From this amazing yet dangerous story, I can regrettably say that I have never heard of these people or the actions they took to help harbor the dozens of lives of Jews. I think this is so because of several reasons including the very idea of religion not wanting to be taught by the public school systems, the information that was provided in the textbooks that the teachers were required to teach did not deal with religion, and learning about people whom had a greater impact on the way history was made. I can remember that as I started to make my way through high school, I had a history teacher named Mrs. Martin and the material that she used was directly from the book. Very little to hardly any information would come from her own books or past years of study. The one thing about her that was interesting was that she was a very devout Christian. Breathing the news of the gospel was almost second nature and she would often talk to anyone whom needed spiritual assistance. As the years progressed, she slowly stopped giving...

...On December 8, 1941 U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt had to deal with an unprecedented attack on American forces in Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. He gave his “Pearl Harbor Address to the Nation” to a joint session of Congress. Because of this surprising turn of events, FDR had no choice but to lead the U.S. into World War II. He uses rhetorical appeals to make his part in the war official. There was no way FDR would back down, he made it clear that with the help of the American public, victory over the Japanese would be easily accomplished. His motive is to convince Congress to declare war on Japan and to solidify even further why the American public voted him into his fourth term as President of the United States. He also wishes to convince...
