Costing Methods

...Costing Methods Paper Monisha Bisor ACC/561 November 21, 2011 Carol Demuth Super Bakery, Inc. Super Bakery, Inc. was formed in 1990 by Franco Harris, a former professional football player. Super Bakery sells vitamin and nutrient-enriched baking goods as a virtual corporation. Super Bakery’s selling, manufacturing, warehousing, and shipping activities are outsourced to external companies in different locations. Strategy Super Bakery faced several challenges in the first four years of operating. They needed to penetrate an existing market that had seen little growth in the baking goods sector. Management realized the need for change. They began to develop unique strategies. The first strategy was to target the school system segment of the food market with healthy, low-calorie, nutritious donuts. This was appealing to the school system market because Super Bakery’s product would help increase sales that were declining due to increased government health requirements. Next Super Bakery began refrigerating, vacuum sealing, and distributing their products across the nation. They were able to break the barrios of local markets and they became a national presence. They gained numerous customers and provided good customer service. Super Bakery helped its customers saved money, too. Finally, Super Bakery was able to lessen investment in permanent staff, fixed assets, and working capital by outsourcing all operating activities and becoming a virtual corporation...

Truman

...In this response paper I will talk about the movie “Truman Show”. And some opinions and results which I got from it and the movies connection with popular culture First of all, I’ll start from the content of the movie. The main character is someone “who has been adopted by a company for the first time”, called Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey), who lives in a giant jar which can be seen from the space (the only building can be seen from space after the The Great Wall) unaware of the World. Truman , who thinks that his little world is “real”, eventually starts to figure out that everything happens around him just about a repetition and everything around him is just about a fiction. However , escaping from his fictional world is not easy as he estimates. Soon, Truman gets forced to face his fears, to go an “unknown” from the world that he is safe inside in order to escape from his “fake world”. In the last scene, director of the Truman Show (Ed Harris) tries to trick Truman (and “of course” the audience).Directors says “ there is nothing better at the “outside”, even inside is better and safe.”. But Truman doesn’t prefer the prison that he is in and escape from it. When I came to my conclusions about the movie is trying to send a message to the audience. For example, in the Truman afraid from sea because he lost her father at sea. Symbolic meanings in any language of the sea means freedom. Truman is afraid of the sea because it is not free. Truman does not exceed the sea following...

Cost Methods

...Cost Methods Super Bakery Inc. was created in 1990 by Franco Harris who is a former Pittsburgh Steelers’ running back. This company supplies baked goods and different types of doughnut to stores nationwide. This paper will discuss the strategies that management used, why management thought it was necessary to install an ABC system, and which cost system would work for Super Bakery. Management Strategies Since Super Bakery is a virtual corporation, only the core business functions are handled inside the company. All other functions are outsourced to external companies. These activities include warehousing, shipping, selling, and manufacturing. Outsourcing is the stategy that management uses at Super Bakery. The idea is to organize the work flow among the external companies by making the minimum investment in staff and assets, while at the same time adding maximum value to the company. ABC System Super Bakery was having problems controlling the cost of activities that were outsourced. Because of this, management decided that it was time to switch from its traditional cost method to a cost method that would more suit the company’s needs. The traditional system made it seem that every order cost the same to complete, when really it was not like that all. The new cost system could identify the costs that were associated with each activity performed and it showed that the profit margins and the costs on each sale varied a significant amount. I agree that it was a...

The Field Movie Review

...translates, however most of the character development fails to make the journey. The Field centers on “Bull” McCabe (Richard Harris), a man whose family has farmed a field for generations and intends to do the same for generations to come. This bearded and battered old man has little else to show for his efforts than the fertile soil he rents from a local, mysterious, widow. He continually offers her what little he has for the land to no avail and carries on tending to this land that isn’t his. Here the story could end - Bull would persist on and be happy, though his gruff exterior wouldn’t let on - and no play or movie would be required. But when a smooth American played by Tom Berenger comes on the scene with money to spend and intentions do so McCabe’s simple plans go enormously awry. The field goes on the market for public auction as the widow changes her tune from ‘I won’t sell’, to ‘I’ll sell to whomever, whenever as long as the price is right’. The combination of the auction and the American trigger turmoil and all the formerly contented townsfolk can’t keep to themselves. Meanwhile Bull and his son Tadgh (Sean Bean) decide to settle the score and keep their land. Bean, like Berenger, is given a character with little to sink his acting chops into. Thus begins a plethora of complaints that weigh on the scale opposite Harris’ epic performance. Thin characters are accepted, and almost expected, in so many movies that when a film comes along with the intention...

Cross Cultural Management

...Abstract             There are a number of methodological issues that can be problematic in cross-cultural studies that use self-report survey instruments. This paper reviews the organizational research literature to identify the common practices being used in relation to these issues. A framework is established for this analysis that involves three stages related to the research process. These stages are 1) the development of the research question, 2) the alignment of the research contexts, and 3) the validation of the research instruments. A sample of cross-cultural studies was examined in the context of these three stages, and served as a basis for the identification of some “best-practices” that are meant to deal with cross-cultural complexities. Introduction International perspectives are becoming more prevalent in today’s study of organizations. As business continues to take a global outlook, theoretical constructs commonly used in domestic research will need to be applied to new cross-cultural arenas. Recently, researchers have begun to take notice of some important methodological issues associated with the use of survey instruments in cross-cultural research (e.g., Cheung & Rensvold, 1999; Riordan & Vandenberg, 1994). These issues can have a strong impact on a study’s results, and on the subsequent interpretation of those results. If researchers ignore the difficulties inherent in using self-report questionnaires in cross-cultural studies, the field as a whole...

The Art of A.Y. Jacksons

...Alexander Young Jackson was born October 3rd, 1882, In the family home which was located on Mackay street, Montreal, Jackson was the third of six children. When people think about Jackson they tend to see him as being a Quebec artist which is rightly so , but the roots of his family reached into Ontario and because of this his art life is identified as much with Ontario as Quebec. Jackson was early influenced by the works of James Wilson Morrice and owes something to the French Impressionists and Post Impressionists. Even thought Jackson work has been influenced Morrice and the French Impressionists and Post Impressionists . Jackson has alway maintained a definite personal quality to his art. Jackson has devoted himself exclusively to landscape painting. It has been the back country which appeals most to Jackson. We should be glad that he has vigorously recorded a section of Canada that is so inexhaustibly rich in character and is infinite in the variety of beauty. There is in everything that he paints an inherent devotion to his own ideals, and a constant striving to dig deeper and explore more fully the sublet and significant manifestation of the Canadian Scene. Jackson is a sublet colourist and an able teachician, but the most mark of index for Jackson identification is the lyrical rhythm and flow of his compositions and the directness with which he grasps the essentials. He knows better than most artists what to leave out and his pictures never carry an overburden of distracting...

Etic and Emic Perspective

...Part II In this section, I will examine veiling practices among Muslim women from an emic perspective. As Crapo (2013) describes it, “An emic description or analysis—that is, an insider’s or native’s meaningful account—may be written for outsiders but portrays a culture and its meanings as the insider understands it” (p.27). In her book chapter entitled The Veil in Their Minds and on Our Heads: Veiling Practices and Muslim Women, Hoodfar (1997) examines misconceptions and stereotypes surrounding this practice. From an emic perspective, Muslim women face unwarranted scrutiny over their choices from people who often have no understanding of the many reasons why women wear the veil. The reasons for wearing the veil may differ from individual to individual and from culture to culture (Hoodfar, 1997). In any culture, it is typical for motivations to vary in this way. For example, in America, wearing revealing clothing may signify confidence in one’s body for some and insecurity for others. There is rarely a one-size-fits-all explanation for any behavior. Despite this, Hoodfar (1997) notes that Muslim women living in North America and Europe often face harsh criticism over their choice to wear the veil, even though many people do not fully understand the practice, and admit to this when engaging Muslim women in conversation about the practice. Muslim women feel harassed and attacked about their choices no matter what they say, and are sometimes afraid of...
