Food we eat first enters our mouth, which is where you find the tongue. We know it’s in there because it tastes the food we put in our mouth. By definition, Body Mass Index is a measurement representing the ratio of a person’s body weight to his or her height. The BMI describes the body weight relative to height, and it correlates strongly (in adults) with the total body fat content. A body mass index of less than 20 is considered to be underweight, while a body mass index between 20 and 25 is considered healthy. A body mass index in the range of 25 to 30 is regarded as overweight. A body mass index over 30 is regarded as obese. A body mass index of 100 or greater is regarded as morbidly obese. In 1975, a young Indian scientist and chemist named Shashikant Phadnis was working on an insecticide at Queen Elizabeth College in London. He was working with his colleague another scientist named Leslie Hough. While working on a compound that mixed sulfuryl chloride and a sugar solution produced a violent reaction that looked like powder. The compound that it produced was 1‘, 4, 6, 6‘- tetrachloro - 1‘, 4, 6, 6’ - tetra-deoxygalactosucrose. Shashikant Phadnis misunderstood a directive from his superior and though he was told to taste the mixture. What he tasted was extremely sweet. He told Hough about it and he tried it as well. Hough was so delighted by the sweetness that he had the idea to put some in his coffee even though Phadnis was concerned about toxicity. The two scientists worked with a British sugar company named Tate & Lyle over the next year to find the perfect formula combination for their discovery. In 1976, Phadnis and Hough found their formula and in its pure form it is known as “sucralose”. The little yellow packets we use today contain fillers with the sucralose known as “Splenda”. A child normally goes to preschool around the age of 4. Kids between the ages of 14 to 18 years are considered adolescents. School aged kids grow slower than infants. They have a consistent growth. Food habits are established during this stage. School aged kids will usually eat between four and five times including snacks. It’s important to have a healthy diet and eat nutritious snacks. Snacks make up about 1/3 of a child’s total calorie intake per day. Growing and active children need snacks and should fall under the five food groups. With the rise of childhood obesity, children need to be taught how to choose healthy choice when eating. Snacks should meet energy and nutrient needs. Eating sugar is not going to be nutritious or give them lasting energy. Parents set the example for healthy eating. Both diet and exercise is important with school aged kids. With the technology advancement these days, it’s easy for a child to sit at a computer, in front of a tv, or with a tablet for hours. Children need to be active for at least an hour or more every day. Childhood diabetes is becoming more common.
