... The first book that I read this summer was Escape From Camp 14, by Blaine Harden. The book retells the story of Shin Dong-hyuk’s escape from Camp 14. Camp 14 is a prison for the political enemies in North Korea, and in the camp Shin was forced to survive torture, starvation, malnutrition, and grueling hours of manual labor since he was a child. In a constant battle zone, Shin fought for food and was brainwashed by the camp into believing nothing existed beyond the fences he was trapped in. On January 2, 2005 Shin escaped from the North Korean political camp and was able to see beyond the fences when he was 23 years old. Shin then dedicated his life to sharing his story and is the only person to ever escape any of the North Korean political prison camps. The main impact of Shin’s story in Camp 14 is the psychological toll the camp took on him. At the beginning of the book, Shin describes that he thought of his mother as competition for survival (77), and this led Shin to do things like steal her lunches. The need for survival in the camp forced Shin to not have typical relationships with his friends and family, and the psychological toll of the camp returned prisoners to their basic human urges and instincts. This idea is similar to what happened to the boys in the Lord of the Flies when they began to turn against each other and view each other as a means for survival instead of friends. Reading Reflection #1: Barthes’ concepts of Connotation & Dennotation This image relates to Barthes concept of the photographic message, specifically in relation to the “denotation” and “connotation” of the messages that can be read from press images. To summarize, Barthes describes that a press photograph has both a denoted message and a connoted message. Essentially, the denoted message is whatever is in the image (Barthes 17). In the case of my own chosen photograph, it is an older male in a suit standing in front of a street corner with a gathering of people around a building behind him. As I walk pass the store, it smells like vanilla. Looking straight ahead there is the beautiful, vast, pink and blue Cinderella Castle. A horse pulls visitors in a trolley, its horseshoe clanking on the road with each step it takes, coming through with a honk. Workers stand around grasping onto an enormous bouquet of balloons, which are bright and colorful. I see people taking pictures in front of the castle, children running around, and families eating. Walking through the Hundred Acre Woods, I see a tall Tigger. Children are squealing waiting in line to meet the character. Metal chains form the lines; people are swinging it, shaking it, all of which fills the atmosphere and all you hear is rattling. The Twilight Samurai is the love story of a low ranked samurai, Seibei, who rises to defeat not only a traitor, but the person who Seibei may later become. Of the many themes in The Twilight Samurai is light. When Seibei is sent to a fight to the death with Tanaka you see Seibei in the light and Tanaka in the dark. Seibei is a good person he always puts his daughters needs before his own and is an honest man. Once Seibei’s wife dies he does all he can to make sure he is always there for his daughters by returning every night at twilight and this is how he acquires the name of ‘The Twilight Samurai.’ Tanaka is a man who has been running his whole life and this has literally driven him to insanity. After Seibei has entered the house Tanaka is hiding in they both sit down and drink tea and Tanaka tells Seibei about his life. ...The world itself is full of people and the secrets hidden within. A prime example of this are from books like The Bad Seed by William March and We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson. These two novels both contain characters with many secrets, many dark secrets that cause them to hide and live away from society. In a sense, these characters live in “secret worlds”. Starting off with The Bad Seed, Rhoda, the main character who is responsible for violent crimes and her mother Christine who is the “guardian angel” that’s responsible for keeping Rhoda out of trouble. Just like Rhoda, the character Merricat from We Have Always Lived in the Castle is the one causing the trouble and her sister Constance is the protector. The dark secrets of both Rhoda and Merricat involving murder provide reasons as to why they separate themselves from society, why this secrecy leads them to perversity and violence and why the emotions felt within encourage this life of secrecy. Both characters live in a world where they have a difficult time adapting to society and life problems. As a result, they do what they feel is needed even if it involves performing murderous actions. The secrecy deep within the characters lead to violence and is probably due to the fact that they don’t have the support that they need.
