...IT 500 Help With Memo Assignment Here is a general structure that you can use for your memo assignment. To: All Employees From: HR Department (or your name) Date: Today RE: My Memo Assignment XYZ... Opening lines would state what is being done, such as a policy on recording phone calls, monitoring emails, and so on. There is no minimum or maximum length here. Averages tend to be two or three paragraphs. Controversies Note the section heading. This helps to distinguish the text that you include to discuss controversies. As a hint, why is your topic controversial? What part of the opening paragraph stating the policies might someone find controversial and why? One may assume that stating “we are reading your email” is controversial, but why? Is it that the employees may expect such things to be private, but the company states otherwise? Best practice is to spell it out and not assume (even though in many cases the controversy may seem obvious). This is your chance to show critical thinking and analysis of why this is a controversy. Within the context of the memo, you can use writer’s prose to explain this to your employees if you want (not required, just a suggestion). Legislation Again, note the section title; this helps the reader distinguish your objective. Think of it in terms of you as an employee. If HR sends you a memo, you may not want to read an entire law word-for-word. Instead, consider mentioning a law by name, and giving a three- or four-sentence...

...Writing Effective Executive Memos By following a few simple guidelines, your memos will be able to communicate a large amount of information in a clear and useful manner. The central principal underlying memo format is that the reader may have little time, may already be familiar with many of the details, and will probably use the memo to assist with later recall of its contents. There are three basic guidelines to follow. Focus the Memo Your memo must be short, direct and clear. In fact, for this class, unless otherwise stated: memos must be no more than one page in length (not counting exhibits). This will aid the reader in processing the critical information quickly. The memo is like a sales pitch – you have only a brief instant to make an impression and convince the reader. A few suggestions: ♦ Put the recommendation (conclusion, suggestion or result) at the top ♦ Discuss only the most important reasons supporting you recommendation ♦ Do not bother with any fancy formatting – format above is just fine Organize the Memo Organization accomplishes two things: it helps the reader understand the material and it facilitates subsequent review of the memo. Good organization allows the reader to skip what he or she already knows and focus on what is new. A few suggestions: ♦ Use headings and font changes to delineate parts, reference exhibit numbers when you discuss analysis in the memo. ♦ Use bullet points...

...Business Letters A business letter is more formal than a personal letter. It should have a margin of at least one inch on all four edges. It is always written on 8½"x11" (or metric equivalent) unlined stationery. There are sixparts to a business letter. 1. The Heading. This contains the return address (usually two or three lines) with the date on the last line. Sometimes it may be necessary to include a line after the address and before the date for a phone number, fax number, E-mail address, or something similar. Often a line is skipped between the address and date. That should always be done if the heading is next to the left margin. (See Business Letter Styles.) It is not necessary to type the return address if you are using stationery with the return address already imprinted. Always include the date. 2. The Inside Address. This is the address you are sending your letter to. Make it as complete as possible. Include titles and names if you know them. This is always on the left margin. If an 8½" x 11" paper is folded in thirds to fit in a standard 9" business envelope, the inside address can appear through the window in the envelope. An inside address also helps the recipient route the letter properly and can help should the envelope be damaged and the address become unreadable. Skip a line after the heading before the inside address. Skip another line after the inside address before the greeting. 3. The Greeting. Also called the salutation. The greeting in a business...

...Form groups of four students. All group members should work together to develop the group’s answers to the three requirements. 1. Using the original costing system with the single indirect cost allocation base (direct labor hours), compute the total budgeted cost per package for the headless shrimp and then for the peeled and deveined shrimp. Round to two decimal places. (Hint: First, compute the predetermined overhead allocation rate. Then compute the total budgeted cost per package for each product.) 2. Use activity-based costing to re-compute the total budgeted cost per package for the headless shrimp and then for the peeled and deveined shrimp. Round to two decimal places. (Hint: First, calculate the predetermined overhead allocation rate for each activity. Then calculate the total indirect costs of (a) the entire headless shrimp product line and (b) the entire peeled and deveined shrimp product line. Next, compute the indirect cost per package of each product. Finally, calculate the total cost per package of each product.) 3. Write a memo to Bronson CEO Gary Pololu explaining the results of the ABC study. Compare the costs reported by the ABC system with the costs reported by the original system. Point out whether the ABC system shifted costs toward headless shrimp or toward peeled and deveined shrimp, and explain why. Finally, explain whether Pololu should feel more comfortable making decisions using cost data from the original system or from the...

...You have one week to finish this exam. It will be due by e-mail to marlon.sherman@humboldt.edu, no later than 5 PM on Wednesday, October 28. The exam will take the form of a legal memo, in which you brief me on the legal standing of our client, Joe Doe. I have provided some links to forms of legal memos that you might use, and there are other examples online. http://www.law.cuny.edu/legal-writing/students/memorandum/memorandum-3.html http://www.lawandborder.com/Academic/LW/LW--Samples/SampleMemoSTCL.pdf You will need to research the position of the individual whom you are representing. What are the positions regarding each party in this case – that is, The Corporation, John Smith and Joe Doe? To what extent do these individuals’ values reflect their positions toward the issue, toward the plaintiff, toward the tribe and toward the state? Would it make any difference whether this took place in a PL 280 or non-280 state? When you have determined the answers to these questions, begin your legal research and prepare to argue your case in court. You will need to analyze pertinent law as we have done in class, looking for facts, issues and analyses, just as the online memo templates suggest. When you mention a particular case, you must cite it using the following hint: Montana v. United States, 450 U.S. 544 (1981), 546. Remember, your boss is very lazy and hates research and has forgotten everything he ever learned in law school, so you’re...

...Writer’s Memo #1: “The Things I Carry” Inspiration Chapter In the chapter “The Things I Carry” by O’Brien, O’Brien lists things that the soldiers of his platoon carry, either tangible or intangible. The soldiers carry things ranging from “their grandmother’s distaste for the white man” to their girlfriend's pantyhose around their neck. Some soldiers carry more intangible things like emotions. Ted Lavender carried fear and tranquilizers to combat said fear. This chapter reminded me of the multiple intangible emotions I carry. Depression and anxiety. For most of my life I have carried these emotions as they drag me down. They are a part of me, they are what make me, me. I’ve gone through some tough times while dealing with these everyday...

...The purpose of this memo is to identify and suggest changes for the VLCD fact sheet to reach a college-aged audience. Summary This fact sheet needs changes to both its language and format of information in some areas in order to effectively reach its target audience of college-aged students. Discussion Beginning with the first paragraph, there is some language that could be modified to appeal to a college-aged audience. The title is simplistic to the point that it does not draw much attention or give a hint as of the benefits of a VLCD. A better title might be “This Diet Will (actually) Help You Lose Weight Fast. This title is longer; however, it describes what a VLCD is and entices the reader to learn more. Additionally, in the first paragraph, the word “patient” is accurate, however, it had a scientific and has a loaded undertone. If a college student were to read the words “people who need to lose weight” instead of “patients who are obese” then they will better understand what is being said and not worry about becoming a sick “patient” by talking to a doctor about starting a VLCD....
