The boob tube, as television is also referred to, provides entertainment to people of all ages. Not just for entertainment value, but TV is also a valuable resource for advertising and different kinds of programming. The television as we see it and know it today was not always this way. Let’s take a brief look at the history of television and how it came into being. Timeline of TV History Different experiments by various people, in the field of electricity and radio, led to the development of basic technologies and ideas that laid the foundation for the invention of television. In the late 1800s, Paul Gottlieb Nipkow, a student in Germany, developed the first ever mechanical module of television. He succeeded in sending images through wires with the help of a rotating metal disk. This technology was called the ‘electric telescope’ that had 18 lines of resolution. Around 1907, two separate inventors, A.A. Campbell-Swinton from England and Russian scientist Boris Rosing, used the cathode ray tube in addition to the mechanical scanner system, to create a new television system. From the experiments of Nipkow and Rosing, two types of television systems...

...Modern Art History Modern art represents the headiest period in all of art history--a span of no more than 110 years that saw an explosion of movements from Realism, to Impressionism, to Cubism, to Abstract Expressionism to Pop and Op, with dozens of others in between and around the world. Hard-Edge Painting: Art History Basics 101 Hard-Edge Painting emphasizes the flat surface of the canvas or paper with clean, clear abstract shapes and surrounding fields of colors. These shapes and fields can be rendered in black and white or brilliant colors. The unity of the composition creates a unified presentation in the art work itself. Color Field Painting: Art History 101 Basics Color Field Painting is a branch of Abstract Expressionism that concentrates on colorful shapes and expanses of color which emphasize the literal flatness of the canvas or paper. Cubism - Art History Basics 101 An early twentieth century art movement that rebelled against Renaissance one-point perspective and illusionism through an emphasis on geometricity, simultaneity, and passage. Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque pioneered Cubism's ideas and style. Abstract Expressionism - Art History 101 Basics Abstract Expressionism or "AbEx" (a.k.a. Action Painting; a.k.a. The New York School) exploded onto the art scene after World War II with its characteristic messiness and extremely energetic applications of paint. To the contemporary audience, the whole enterprise seemed like youthful antagonism--hardly...

...allowed people to seek comfort and safety. Dong Qichange was a controversial politician regarded as an outstanding Chinese landscape painter. He was born in 1555 in what is known today as Shanghai, China. In addition to being a painter he was also a calligrapher and theoretician. His most remarkable contribution to art was introducing new ways to present thoughts in painting landscape views. Thus, you have the Northern and Southern styles of art. The Northern school of art taught about obtaining truth through art, and the Southern School stressed an “intuitive understanding” (Arthistory Archive.com, 2011). ...purpose of this paper is to accurately and critically analyze the major changes of technology throughout the film industry’s history. As two college students majoring in computer and technological fields, we feel that it is imperative to understand how cameras and technology and evolved and their effects on the film industry. Although the growth of technology in the film industry may seem of concern to only film makers, it should in fact concern anyone who cares about the future of the cinematography and/or television. Innovations in film technology have undoubtedly shaped the film industry into what it is today. As two college students majoring in computer and technological fields, we feel that it is imperative to understand how cameras and technology have evolved, and their effects on film production. Utilizing what we have learned in class and multiple sources of research, we will critically analyze the major changes in film technology history. The world’s first films produced were black and white, but even to make a black and white film, several important inventions were required. These inventions needed to record video, store the recording, and produce enough lighting to be able to see the scene. In 1893, Thomas Edison introduced the Kinetograph and Kinetoscope to the public, which may have been the largest innovation in film technology (Movie History). The Kinetograph was the first motion picture camera, and was combined with the Kinetoscope which housed a lamp and film to...

...GSS5000 | The History of Nail Art | Nail art and Nail Polish | | By Trang Nguyen | 11/11/2014 | | Abstract Nail art is a fashion sense in today’s world of fashion; it has become more and more popular in the beauty industry and women and men all across the world are making this a fashion trend. Whether or not nail art may be a “new” trend or not, nail polish has been around since high- gloss car paint was invented. Interestingly, back in 3200 B.C., Babylonian males wore black or green nail polish, which signified class; with green representing the lower class and black as the higher class.(Oliveras, 2012) Other countries such as China, Britain, France, and America have an intriguing history of how nail polish existed in their culture. Nail polish and nail art may be the trend today; however, it has always been a trend for many other cultures back in history as well. Keywords: Nail Art, Nail Polish In China and in Egypt, 3000 B.C., the Chinese wore color on their nails as a reflection of class and the ruling of the different Dynasties. The Egyptian and Indian women stained their nails using henna so that the color of their nails would distinguish the upper and lower class; similar to the Babylonian’s. The Babylonian wore green which represented the lower class and black as the higher class. Colors such as a light red were worn by the people of the Victorian era. (Oliveras, 2012) Nail polish and Nail art isn’t a new thing… it has been around for many years...

...RED, WHITE, BLUE AND YOU Or, The Color of Politics An Essay by Charles Ebeling Presented at the Chicago Literary Club Election Eve, November 5, 2012 Copyright 2012 Charles Ebeling Dedicated to the memory of my good friend and neighbor Marshall J. Goldsmith Who was my guest at the Literary Club, October 24, 2011 Some us recall a great 1986 film called “The Color of Money,” and no, cynics, it wasn’t about politics. That film earned Paul Newman the Oscar for Best Actor as a pool hustler and stakehorse, who enjoyed a glass or two of J.T.S. Brown Kentucky bourbon, my favorite beverage from college days. But, unless I’ve missed a documentary or foreign film along these lines, I haven’t yet seen a dramatization called “The Color of Politics.” Yes, there is such a thing as “The Politics of Color,” but as social commentary, not as a film title. “The Color of Politics” is equally real though, and has a long history. I first dabbled in the palette of politics on election eve, 2008, when I presented before the club on that occasion an essay I’d titled “One Collage Too Many,” painting...

... More Than a Color In Trinidad Sanchez Jr’s “Why am I so brown” a little girl questions why she is the color she is and why it must be this way. Sanchez answers her questions with many metaphorical statements but one statement in particular stands out from the rest “because it is one of HER favorite colors”, this like many of the lines in this poem is can be interpreted in many different ways. Lines like the previous are what make poems like this very unique and interesting because of the many metaphors it uses to describe culture and Hispanic heritage. In the following lines Sanchez explains to the little girl (Raquel Guerrero) how her color ties her in with her roots. God made you brown, mi'ja color bronce--color of your raza connecting you to your raices, your story/historia as you begin moving towards your future (Sanchez 1-5) In this first stanza Sanchez explains to Raquel that God made her brown and that her skin color is much more than a color, it connects her to her race and roots with a beautiful history behind it. Hispanic culture has been responsible for many of the foods, traditions, and family orientation we have in Texas and all over the United States, Sanchez is telling Raquel that she should be proud of her color because behind the color bronce(which just means bronze) is a culture that is beautiful. In the following stanza Sanchez provides Raquel Guerrero further reasons to be proud of her color. God made you brown, mi'ja color bronce, beautiful/strong...

...Being born with white skin in the United states affords people specific privileges unavailable to people of color. For example, people of color often experience housing discrimination (landlords refuse to rent to black people, or charge them higher rents; in 2009 bailed-out banks were found to have pushed minority-borrowers who qualified for prime loans into subprime loans, which can add more than $100,000 in interest payments). Black men make .72 cents to every dollar a white man makes; Black women make .64 cents to every white male dollar; Latina women make .53 cents to every white male dollar. People of color generally face longer sentences for lesser crimes, while whites receive shorter sentences for greater...

We all play and love baseball so we wanted to know how it really changed history. We all know a few players were famous because of their color. Also, we all wanted to know what baseball meant when the color barrier was not broken. Moreover, our group wanted to know how baseball was a major point in history. Lastly, we wanted to know many different ways the color barrier was broken and who broke it. In conclusion, since baseball is famous today we wanted to know how it really became so famous. How We Constructed Our Research We constructed our research in several ways. One way we researched out topic was we went to the library and asked the librarian for books about Jackie Robinson and Babe Ruth. She helped us find many books and we took notes on these people. Since there are four people in our group, we needed to split the work evenly. Two people researched about people, and two people researched about events in baseball history. Splitting the work between four people made it so much easier to construct our website. In addition, each member of the group gathered pictures off Google that related to our topic.
