CLP 4134: Child Psychopathology

Fall 2012

|I. |COURSE NUMBER AND TITLE: |
| |CLP 4134: Child Psychopathology |
| |Days: Online course |
| |Time: Online Course |
| |Location: Online Course |
| |Course start and end dates: August 20, 2012- December 3, 2012 |
|II. |INSTRUCTOR: |
| |Name: Paige Telan, Ph.D; LMHC |
| |E-mail: telanp@fiiu.edu |
| |Phone: (954) 263-3997 |
|III. |COURSE DESCRIPTION |
| | |
| |This three-credit course will concentrate on the major forms of abnormal behavior in childhood and adolescence. These |
| |include disorders of behavior (e.g., attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder), disorders|
| |of emotion (e.g., anxiety and depression), developmental and learning problems (e.g., autism, mental retardation, |
| |learning disabilities), and problems related to physical and environmental challenges (e.g., anorexia, child abuse and |
| |neglect). You will learn about the defining characteristics, associated features, possible causes, research evidence, |
| |and current approaches to intervention and prevention for a wide range of child and adolescent psychological problems. |
| |First-person accounts and case examples will be used to enhance your understanding of what children with these disorders|
| |experience. |
| | |
| |This course is designed for students majoring in a wide range of disciplines who study or work with atypical children as|
| |well as for those who have a general interest in learning more about abnormal psychological development in children. |
| | |
|IV. |LEARNING OUTCOMES |
| | |
| |Upon successful completion of this course students will: |
| |Identify and categorize different types of childhood psychological problems. |
| |Apply different theories to explain the causes of child psychopathology. |
| |Integrate existing research to analyze issues pertaining to children with emotional or behavioral problems. |
| |Demonstrate empathy towards children who experience challenges. |
|V. |REQUIRED MATERIALS |
| | |
| |E.J. Mash & D.A Wolfe (2010). Abnormal child psychology (4rd ed.). Belmont, CA: Wadsworth. |
| |Please note that this is a required textbook for the course and without it, you have a minimal chance of being |
| |successful in the course. |
| | |
| |The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV (DSM-IV) is an optional text, one that I will frequently refer to throughout |
| |the semester, and one that I strongly recommend for those of you who plan to become psychology majors. |
|VI. |COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND POLICIES |
| | |
| |A. PARTICIPATION & ATTENDANCE: This online course requires that students must participate on a daily basis. Calendar |
| |dates and deadlines must be strictly followed and students must be active participants in the discussion process. |
| |Through the website listed below, students will be able to access all course information and materials and complete all |
| |required assignments. |
| |Blackboard Access: http://online.fiu.edu/login/uts |
| | |
| |This course is fully online, and requires reliable internet access. You should have a regular, reliable internet source,|
| |AND plans for a back-up internet source.. It will be difficult to take this course using a dial-up modem, since the |
| |pages are large and would take a very long time to load. I do not accept lack of internet access as an excuse for |
| |missing course due dates, unless there is a natural disaster that causes widespread power and telephone outages in your |
| |area. What this means is that you should not wait until the last minute to begin an exam! If your computer crashes or |
| |your regular internet source is unavailable, you may need to travel to your back-up internet source for the exam. If you|
| |must travel for family or work responsibilities, remember that course assignments and exams may be submitted from any |
| |computer with internet access. |
| | |
| |B. PLAGIARISM: Plagiarism is a major academic offense and will be fully punished if caught. Plagiarism means the |
| |presentation of the ideas and/or the words of someone else as one’s own. It is your responsibility to know what is |
| |considered plagiarism. I will be using the website Turnitin.com to identify plagiarism in the papers. If any part of a |
| |paper is found to be plagiarized or written by someone other than the student who purported to write the paper, the |
| |consequence includes, but is not limited to, a grade of “0” for that assignment with no make-ups allowed. For a detailed|
| |description of Plagiarism and its potential consequences, consult the Florida International University 2012 student |
| |handbook. |

| |DESCRIPTION OF ASSIGNMENTS |
| | |
| |The completion of all assignments is required. All papers must be typed using the following computer program: |
| |Microsoft Word. In addition, you are responsible for obtaining the text and CD-Rom set in a timely manner. Any |
| |technical difficulties with the course, contact the FIU online division at (305) 348-3630. |
| |A. |
| |QUIZZES: 6 quizzes – 20 points each |
| |Quizzes will be available by the week/module number. In other words, Quiz #1 will be available from the beginning of |
| |week/module 2 and will be unavailable at the close of week/module 2 (i.e. Sunday, Sept 2 at 11:00 pm). No make-up |
| |quizzes will be given for any reason. Therefore, it is recommended that you DO NOT leave the quiz until the last minute.|
| |The quizzes will be multiple choice and cover material from the textbook, powerpoint lectures, and video clips. There is|
| |a 1 hour minute time limit. Once you access a quiz, you cannot exit it and re-enter it at a later time. So you must |
| |complete the quiz once you begin taking it. Quizzes are worth a total of 120 points. |
| | |
| | |
| |B. |
| |PAPER: 25 points |
| |Approach the paper assignments as follows. Choose one disorder or problem from the following (other disorders/problems |
| |or topics will be considered if you speak with the instructor and give appropriate rationale *before* the first paper is|
| |due). This is the disorder or topic on which you will become an "expert" during the semester. |
| |1. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (or one of its subtypes) |
| |2. Conduct Disorder /Aggression |
| |3. Autism and/or pervasive developmental disorders and/or Asperger's syndrome |
| |4. Child depression and or anxiety and/or loss |
| |5. Child schizophrenia |
| |6. Sexual or Physical Abuse or other trauma (if "other" clear it with instructor first) |
| |7. Eating disorders in children/adolescents |
| |8. Substance and alcohol use in children/adolescence |
| |9. Violence, bullying, and child mental health |
| |10. Verbal Learning Disorder/Reading Disability |
| |11. Nonverbal Learning disability and/or Asperger's syndrome |
| |12. Culture and ethnicity in relation to child psychopathology |
| |13. Environmental toxins (e.g., lead, mercury, PCB's) and child mental illness and cognitive/behavioral health |
| |14. Prenatal teratogens (e.g., alcohol, tobacco, drugs) and child mental illness and cognitive/behavioral health |
| |15. Gender and child psychopathology |
| |16. Genetics of child disorders |
| |17. A single major risk factors and its effects (e.g., poverty, parent depression, lead exposure, environmental |
| |contaminants, low birth weight). |
| |18. Resilience. |
| |19. Prevention. |
| |Technical Requirements |
| |Your paper should be a minimum of 5-6 pages in length, and APA format is required. The 5-6 page length does NOT include |
| |the required APA title and reference pages. In addition, you need to have a minimum of 3 peer reviewed, academic sources|
| |for your paper. You have access to multiple databases through the FIU library website. |
| |Paper specifics |
| |The paper should cover (1) phenomenology, epidemiology, and long term course of the problem or issue, (2) current |
| |theories and best evidence regarding etiology including attention to environmental and biological risk and protective |
| |factors, family factors, psycho-social effects, brain substrates, and genetic data, and if relevant, (3) prevention |
| |and/or intervention. The goal is to formulate a clearly written, informative, and synthetic explanation of the disorder |
| |or problem, such that your paper could be useful to your peers or other interested but non-expert persons learning about|
| |the topic. Within this term paper, present your analysis of the key research issues facing the field and what research |
| |studies you think are most likely to help people who have this disorder. In grading, points will be assigned heavily for|
| |CLARITY and CRITICAL ANALYSIS, in addition to points for coverage of each of the three basic sections of the paper, |
| |adequacy of introduction and conclusion, adequacy of transitions, and organization and mechanics. You will turn your |
| |papers in through the Turnitin.com website, an Internet-based plagiarism-detection service to screen for originality. |
| |Papers will not be accepted after their due dates without penalty. There will be a 10% deduction applied to your grade |
| |for each day they are late. |
| | |
| | |
| |C. |
| |FINAL EXAM – 100 points |
| |During the Final Exam period you will have a multiple choice final exam covering all of the material from the course. |
| |The dates for the exam will be announced later in the course. As a general rule, the final exam must be submitted by |
| |11:00 pm. The final exam is worth 100 points. |
| | |
| | |
| |D. |
| |PARTICIPATION – 7 Discussion Modules - 10 points each |
| |There will be a total of 7 discussion questions throughout the course. Each discussion session will last for a two week |
| |period, during which time you are expected to post your responses. Class participation can be demonstrated by posting |
| |responses to the discussion question, commenting on other students’ responses, and by asking questions relevant to the |
| |topic of the week. It is required that you post at least 4 times per discussion on at least 4 different days to |
| |encourage a lively discussion. Four postings per discussion module (a two week period) is the minimum number of postings|
| |per discussion and will yield a minimum grade. Class participation will be based on the quality and quantity of your |
| |postings. For example one sentence answers such as, “I agree with you” will not count towards your grade. Participation|
| |is worth a total of 70 points (10 points per discussion module). |
| | |
| |Please be mindful that discussion modules will be open for 2 week periods. Therefore, you will have two weeks to think |
| |about, read other responses and post your own insights to the discussion board. |
| | |
| |The Discussion Board: How It Works: |
| | |
| |Every two weeks, I will post a discussion question (sometimes two) for you to think about and answer. You will post your|
| |own response to the discussion question on the discussion board. Your responses will be evaluated based on their depth |
| |and level of critical thought. Your responses should include your own opinions, as well as supporting evidence from the |
| |textbook and/or other credible sources. The more in-depth your response, the better your grade. Responding with “I |
| |agree” is not sufficient and will not count as one of the three required postings. First postings should contain |
| |grammatical sentences that have been thought out. |
| | |
| |Further, you are expected to read everyone else’s postings. Each post builds on the other posts. By reading all posts, |
| |you will avoid repeating questions and comments. This class is about furthering learning by challenging each other to |
| |understand the material in new ways. You should be an active participant who affects the flow of the class by |
| |contributing to the class discussions. You can accomplish this by discussing what has already been discussed and |
| |building upon it. Remember that participation is a part of your grade that is within your control, and it can enhance |
| |or hinder your overall grade. The following is a description of the grading criteria for the participation portion of |
| |the class: |
| | |
| |(A): |
| |Posted all four required replies and on four separate days, but goes beyond that by replying much more often than the |
| |minimum expected. |
| |First posting is in depth and contains grammatical sentences that have been thought out. |
| |Demonstrates attention to what has already been posted by classmates. |
| |Always includes source citations. |
| |Encourages further discussion by posting comments on other students’ answers: either adding to the answer or disputing |
| |the answer. |
| |Asks more questions, germane to the discussion. |
| |The A student has an established presence in the class, pays attention to classmates’ comments and deepens the class |
| |discussion. |
| | |
| |(B): |
| |Meets the minimum requirement of four postings per module (on 4 separate days) and replies more than the minimum |
| |expected. |
| |First posting contains grammatical sentences that have been thought out. |
| |Answers all assigned questions with attention to what has been posted by classmates already. |
| |One response may includs source citations. |
| |Encourages further discussion by posting comments on other students’ answers: either by adding to the answer or |
| |disputing the answer. |
| |The B student shows a solid work ethic by participating in a timely manner, developing the conversation outside of the |
| |assigned requirements, and paying attention to his/her classmates’ comments. |
| | |
| |(C): |
| |Meets the minimum requirement of four postings but does not post on four separate days. |
| |Answers all assigned questions with attention to what has been posted by classmates already. |
| |Does not always include source citations. |
| |Encourages further discussion by posting comments on other students’ answers: either by adding to the answer or |
| |disputing the answer. |
| | |
| |(D): |
| |Meets the minimum requirement of four postings, but often repeats information that has already been posted, rather than |
| |adding to the discussion. |
| |Demonstrates minimum involvement with the class. |
| | |
| |(F): |
| |Fails to post all assignments, and OR routinely misses deadlines. |
| |Often repeats information already posted rather than adding anything new to the discussion |
| | |
| | |
| | |
|VIII. |GRADING CRITERIA |
| | |
| |Grades will be based on the assignment’s appropriateness to meet curriculum and course expectations, demonstrated class |
| |readiness, organization, thoroughness, professional presentation, application of course content and informative class |
| |participation. Contact your instructor immediately regarding emergency situations. |
| | |
| |All written assignments will be graded on usage and structure of STANDARD ENGLISH, including grammar, spelling, and |
| |punctuation. Additionally, the papers will be graded according to the following criteria: |
| |Addressing the assigned topic |
| |Originality |
| |Clarity of thought and organization of ideas |
