The characters, Bernie, Gayle and Bubber, had different perspective bias that their portrayed or showed in the movie. First, Bernie LaPlante, was not very traditional; he is more of a person who shows utilitarianism in his actions. When he found out that Bubber was acting as the person who helped the people in the plane crash, he did not ask him to tell everyone that it was him. He believed that it was the common good to let the people believe and still listen to the goodness of John Bubber.
Second, Gayle Gayley, also portrayed consequentialism when someone was accusing Bubber of trying to steal from her while rescuing the people on the plane. She believed that even though Bubber tried to steal, his actions of saving her countered that. Lastly, John Bubber, showed the consequentialism in his actions, when he was showing unselfish acts of trying to reach out to the people. “The end justified the mean” shows that even though he lied acting as Mr. LaPlante, he was still showing acts of kindness showing his true intentions. For the autonomy of morality, the characters did not have to believe in God or the church to be able to show their morality. It was inherent in the characters for being considered as social beings. Mr. LaPlante used Morality as inner conviction, according to the five ways of looking at Morality, when he noticed that the kid needed his help. His inner peace of seeing the child, and disappointing the child would bug him all throughout his life if he did not help the kid. For, John Bubber, at first he was after the rewards, or Morality as Law but at the latter part when his inner peace continued to bug him about lying as Bernie LaPlante, he showed the Morality as Inner Conviction.
There are four constitutive dimensions of a person according to Richard Gula. First, humans are relational beings. Mr. LaPlante, portrayed this by thinking of the common good in helping the people in the plane crash. Second, humans are embodied subjects. Even though LaPlante was a wellknown robber, he still had a good heart and choosing in helping the people in the plane, showing that he is indeed in charge of his own life. Third, humans are historical beings. It is taking advantage of
each opportunity of the present in the overall journey to full human development. They integrate the past, into the present to be able to move on to the future. Through Mr. Bubber, he used what he experienced in the past, to be able to instruct the people to help the least fortunate people around them, to be able to make the world a better place, a world where people are in harmony. Lastly, humans are fundamentally equal but uniquely original. In the movie, we would not expect people to help the passengers. Even though everyone in the world is equal, we cannot expect everyone to do the same, to risk their life. Some would have different ways of responding to situations.
God created humans in his image and likeness (Genesis 1:27), showing that humans have essential dignity rooted from God. Through this, humans with intellect and conscience, has a responsibility to live a moral life and to live harmoniously with others. The characters believed that they have the responsibility to live harmoniously with others. Mr. Bubber, seeing the hardships of the people around the hotel he stayed as a reward for his actions, instructed the people to help them, to give them blankets due to the cold weather they are experiencing. The people looked up to Mr. Bubber, and followed what he told them to do. Through John Bubber, the people opened their minds to the needs of others, helping people live harmoniously with each one.
Mr. LaPlante used his human freedom when he made his own choice in saving the people inside the burning airplane. Also, he realized that he didn’t fit the character of the one who saved people’s lives as it is not part of his ‘identity’ or what others say about him. John Bubber continued to pretended to be someone else to be able to help others, and this particular choice of his is freedom, for freedom is wanting to do what we can do. Ms. Gayle Gayley showed how she was one of the best TV reporter because this is what she wants and she lives up to it and earns it. Freedom to decide what we want ourselves to be and to make of ourselves is what call basic or core freedom.
The three main characters portrayed the Human Act due to them realizing, and doing their acts with knowledge and freedom. Mr. LaPlante continued to save the passengers which are called the
act-in-itself in the fonts of morality. His intentions or the end intended by the agent was to be able to help the child find his father. The circumstances of his actions were he might not be able to save the father and his life. Mr. Bubber acted as Mr. LaPlante with the knowledge that what he is doing is wrong. His intentions were to be able to get the reward, and the circumstances were Mr. LaPlante was not recognized of his good deeds. Ms. Gayle Gayley realized that Mr. Bubber wasn’t who he really is and she knew the situation but still did not do anything about it.
Mr. LaPlante steals money and goods, in every opportunity that he can get in the movie. Even when he was saving Ms. Gayle Gayley from the burning airplane, he still grabbed for the opportunity of stealing her cash and credit card. What Mr. LePlante did is considered as Intrinsic evil. There are actions that are moral evil in themselves. Mr. LePlante stole from other people which is regarded as intrinsic evil because they are contrary to Natural law. Mr. Bubber potrayed what is ontic or premoral evil. He continued to pretend to be Mr. LaPlante to be able to inspire and help other people in need, but still carries along some evil aspect which is him pretending to be someone he’s not.
Conscience is said to be the awareness of God’s call to know and do the good and a practical judgement of the intellect. Mr. Bubber still continued to pretend to be Mr. LePlante for the money and the fame that he is receiving despite how his conscience was working already as how guilty his acts made him feel. He thought that even if he was just pretending, he was still able to inspire other people and for him that made his act good. As for Ms Gayle Gayley, In the end even if she knew that Mr.
Bubber wasn’t who he really is, she didn’t do anything anymore just like what Mr. Bubber thought that at least they were helping inspire people out there and making a difference despite the lie. At first Mr.
LaPlante didn’t want to open the door of the airplane, but as the people inside called for help he decided to help the people stuck inside. Mr. LaPlante’s true or correct conscience has made him decide to go in the burning airplane that crashed and help the people who are stuck inside.
