Week 7 Homework

...ACCT553 Week 7 Homework Chapters 10-11-12 1. Please explain the distinction between a "realized" gain and a "recognized" gain. (5 pts) A realized gain is the excess of the amount realized on a sale or exchange over the basis of the property sold or exchanged. The recognized gain is the amount of the realized gain that will be treated as income and subject to tax on the seller’s income tax return. 2. Are there any limits to the deductibility of losses on sales and exchanges between related parties? What code section defines this limitation? (5 pts.) No loss deduction is allowed on sales or exchanges of property, directly or indirectly between certain related parties. This can be found under Code Section 267. 3. What is the basis of property received (i.e. new property) in a like-kind exchange? What is the holding period for the new asset? (5 pts.) To figure out the basis of the new property, start with the fair market value of the like-kind property received. Any deferred gain is subtracted and deferred losses are added. This gives the basis of the acquired property. The holding period for property acquired in a nontaxable exchange includes the holding period of the property given in exchange if the property was a capital asset or property used in a taxpayer’s trade or business. 4. ...“Aw shucks” said Justin as he messed around with his new Netbook that he purchased for his Information Technology class. He was looking through the Library in Windows Explorer for a Spreadsheet that he had been working on but he couldn't find the file. The problem was that this new Computer had an unfamiliar new Operating System called Windows 10. He was lost in the new menus and knew nothing about how to navigate this new operating system. He decided to Google a “how to” guide so that he may learn the basics. He only had experience with older operating systems and was stubborn when trying out new Software. Even with all the new Tablet PCs and their fancy Touch Screens, Justin liked to keep things simple: an old desktop with the basic Peripheral Devices like a mouse and monitor. He didn't care for touch screens and Web Cams. “Why must they force these new and weird ways into my Computer?” as he reminisced about Windows XP while eating a bowl of lukewarm oat meal. Even finding out how to load the Word Processor into the RAM so that he may work on an assignment was like finding a needle in a haystack. He wished that he could go back to his old desktop. Although the Hardware was older, and the CPU wasn’t as fast, Justin knew the computer very well and would be able to find anything he wanted. The problem was that the older computer wasn't reliable. But he decided to risk finishing his work on it. He could then copy it to a Flash Drive or even to Cloud storage, and then just simply...

Life

...American yesterday evening. So today is my first day to live with a roommate. I went to sleep after I have been exciting in several hours last night. Because I was afraid to be late for today’s classes, I set alarm at 8 AM. In a psychological reason, I waked up at 7:10AM. Found the time was early and slept again. But worried about oversleep, I could not sleep. Then I got up at 7:30 and did not have a good sleep. After I brushed teeth, washed my face and had a breakfast. I began to my today’s study life. I have five classes in a day. There are three classes in morning and two classes in afternoon. My favorite class is writing in the first time. I will go to the classroom ten minutes earlier every day. Writing class is a course to train students’ integrated English level. Because of this, I must learn it well. Other two classes in morning are listening and speaking. It was 12:00 AM When I finished these classes. All the students have to have lunch in Dining Hall. After the meal, I began to take other two classes in afternoon. Every class has homework, so I must do my homework after we finish the classes. Home work is a good way to practice and learn English. I would face them seriously. Commonly, I take two hours to do homework then have supper. In the evening, I will study until 9:00 PM, after talking with my family online. I will go to bed at 23:00 pm. Mostly everyday is similar. You can see my school life is single and repeated. But I felt it full of challenge and effort. I will learn...
