Introduction of case study:-

This case study is about software performance engineering, which was applied in hospital information management system to reduce response time. Software Performance Engineering (SPE) is a systematic, quantitative approach to the cost-effective development of software systems to meet performance requirements. SPE, a software-oriented approach, focuses on architecture, design, and implementation choices. This process is mainly used to avoid any discrepancy in the final product as it tries to eliminate error while designing and production of proposed product only.

In this case study through software performance engineering response time was reduced by 1.25 second this improvement was achieved because of list processing of bio tests and medicine order, as they were sending test order and medicine prescription in form of bunch. And another feature of this upgraded software was that it setup its connection in advance i.e. prior to operator clicks for registration. Response time reduction at each stage will ultimately result in more satisfied customer for hospital. Response time is an important parameter for the evaluation of performance and reduction in this will result in elevated performance level of hospital.

This case study also mentions some of the advantage of using hospital information system like it enables Health care institutions/organizations to automate their workflow and provide them an efficient way of handling business. It helps healthcare providers in delivering the best healthcare to patients at the lowest cost. It also Safeguards data integrity, security and accessibility. Captures and analyses clinical data which improves the quality of service.

Different modules of hospital information system are designed to cater the need of different department of hospital, like diet module, ward module, registration module, laboratory module, billing module etc.

Analysis of case study:-

• All hospital are using hospital information system in their daily operation and a software re engineered with an output of reduced response will be very much applicable.

• As hospital information system is used at all major areas of hospital like in Front Office, Finance, Cash Counter, Pharmacy, Medical Information, Laboratory, Inventory and Payroll etc so, reduction in response time at each level will yield good result for hospital.

• Basic advantages of using hospital information system are it is quick, economic and complete. And continuous up gradation through software performance engineering will make it more efficient.

• Software performance engineering makes end product more objective oriented and hence produce more accurate error free result. The process continues through the detailed design, coding, and testing stages to develop more precise models of the software and its predicted performance.

• For any software performance refers to Response time/responsiveness and scalability are the parameters through which performance are measured. The response time is the time required to respond to a request while scalability refers to how fast a system can respond to increasing workload.

• Most of the problems of software are due to design factor and software performance engineering tries to eliminate design error before its final production and hence results in creating responsive software.

• Software Performance Engineering helps in producing the data required for evaluation, procedures for obtaining performance specifications, and guidelines for the types of evaluation to be conducted at each development stage.

• As hospital information system stores and processes patient data, accounting information, hospital administration and inventory updates so it should be error free and it can be assured on the basis of prediction of systems performance through software performance engineering.

• As hospital information system stores medical record of patients which should not be accessible to every person having access to the HIS, so before execution of hospital information software this parameter should be evaluated through software performance engineering.

• Hospital information system consist of various module like ward module, registration module, diet module etc, each module is designed to perform specific task and all these modules allows hospital to automate their workflow and make entire operation smooth and software performance engineering helps in evaluating each module’s compatibility before its implementation and thus provide sufficient time to take corrective measure in case of any gap in standard output and tested output of various module.

• Hospital information system should be designed in a way which allows hospital to provide best health care to patient at lowest possible cost and this goal can be achieved by effective re engineering of software or through effective performance engineering of software.

• Hospital information system generates reports on the basis of which administrative decision are made in a hospital so, software need to be error free, quick responding and user friendly.

• Hospital information management software make work flow of hospital smooth and allows participation of customer in service delivery which results in form of satisfied customer.

• Major problem in service delivery of any hospital are long waiting time in OPD, delay in discharge process etc, response time reduction through software engineering can help in reducing time consumed at each level of service delivery process and hence will improve the quality of service.

• Through software performance engineering response time can be successfully reduced at all these mentioned level of service process-initialization of portal, ordering bio test, ordering medicine, scheduling, process payment, saving patient information, and termination of portal.

• Every patient who visits the hospital has to get registered prior to getting any consultation, treatment or investigations done. Registration of patients involves accepting certain general and demographic information about the patient which gives hospital a data base on basis of which need assessment of customer (patients) can be done so that hospital can satisfy those need of customer.

Suggestions:-

• As technology changes at very fast rate so up gradation of hospital information system should be done at regular interval.

• Staffs should be trained and educated about the different modules of hospital information system, it will make the process smooth and also reduce the time required to perform any process of service delivery.

• With the help of software performance engineering hospital information can be made more patient friendly, an id password can be provided to patient so that they can easily access their medical record, can make online appointment etc.

• Patients should be educated about hospital information system so that they can contribute actively in the process of service delivery.

• Waiting time should be reduced at minimum in various department of hospital with the help of software performance engineering.

• For continuous up gradation of quality of service hospital information system can be used to get standard performance.

• Hospital information system should be made more users friendly.

• Hospital information system should eliminate all those activities which do not add any value to the end product i.e. service to the patient, and this can be done by software performance engineering.

• Time consumed in accessing hospital information system account, processing registration and fees can be reduced through software performance engineering.

• A committee should be made in hospital which will be responsible for continuous up gradation and improvement of hospital information system.

• Though the reduction in response time is very less it should be adopted by hospitals, as reduction of 1.25 second at each stage of service delivery will result in shortening o of the entire processing time.

• Employees of hospital should be encouraged to report any problem and give suggestion for improvement in hospital information system as they are the end user of hospital information system.
