Thoreau's views were simple and self-supporting. Chris McCandless knowing this tried his best to follow in Thoreau's footsteps as best he could. Chris abandoned his parents, society and his car. He gave away all his money, 25 thousand dollars, to charity, and killed himself trying to be like Thoreau going into the Alaskan wilderness. Chris had good ideas about living off the land and paddling down the Colorado River to the Gulf of California all in an attempt to be like Thoreau. The problem is that Chris could never fully stick to Thoreau's theology and survive. When he attempted to paddle to the Gulf of California, he crossed the border then when he tried to come back to America the police threw him into jail. He also wasn't fully committed
