Fritz Haber was born on December 9, 1868 in Breslau, Silesia, present day Wroclaw, Poland. His mother died giving birth to him and he did not have a very good relationship with his father that carried on later in life. Fritz and his father, a Jewish importer, had many arguments over his father's beliefs and profession against his son's beliefs. Fritz Haber received his primary education through a free program at a local gym. His secondary education was at St. Elizabeth Classical School. As he entered college at the University of Berlin in 1886, he began to study organic chemistry and the practical application of it. This synthesis process is now known as the Haber-Bosch process, because Haber was assisted by an engineer named Carl Bosch. This feat of chemistry earned him a Nobel prize in chemistry, and was later argued to be one of the most important technological advances of the twentieth century. Almost all of the food produced in the world today is still produced using fertilizers created using the Haber-Bosch process. Quickly after winning his prize, Fritz became close friends with the younger Albert Einstein and remained close up until Habers death, even though they had many differing opinions in politics and what chemistry could or should be used for. Later, in 1906, he became a full time professor and headed the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry. He mainly took this position because the main funder of the institution was Jewish, and refused to continue supporting it unless they had Haber as the director.
