Joseph-François Lafitau, a french Jesuit missionary-scholar, provides a novel approach to compare disparate cultures in his major work Moeurs des Sauvages Amériquains, Comparées aux Moeurs des Premiers Temps (Customs of the American Indians Compared with the Customs of Primitive Times translated into English). Lafitau organized his text into two volumes, comprising of 15 chapters on the Iroquois Indians’ social practices. By comparing their customs, Lafitau sought above all to prove three points. Firstly, he sought to demonstrate that the whole population of the world stemmed from a common ancestor, or origin, as described in Genesis.
