Juana Inés de la Cruz was a scholar, philosopher, poet, and Jeronymite nun from Chimalhuacán, who lived from 1651 to1695 and today is recognized as one of the greatest literary figures of colonial Spanish America. The illegitimate daughter of Spanish creoles, de la Cruz was considered a child prodigy, called to court in Mexico City and recognized as a great intellectual and poet by her early teenage years. In 1667, at the age of 16 she joined a convent of the Order of Saint Jerome, deciding to continue her studies as a nun.
