The year 1836, was an exceedingly significant year for America; it was that year that Texas declared independence from Mexico and began its journey to being accepted as a republic in the United States. Yet, why did the citizens of Texas declare independence? It’s not as if they woke up one morning and decided they should be independent- in fact, they believed the restrictions placed on them by the Mexican government were unfair and went against the constitution of the country. The prohibition of arms, was one of the major bans that angered the citizens, because it was “…essential to our defense” and “…encouraged the merciless Indians to massacre the inhabitants of our defenseless frontiers…” (Doc.
