In The Glass Essay by Anne Carson, the author uses juxtaposition and metaphor to contrast the desolation of her destination with the efforts made by the author to tend to her mother. The author’s destination is described in three juxtaposed paratactic lines. There are many words used to describe an expanse of uncultivated land; the word “moor” is used to describe the land and suggest that “She,” her mother, is moored in the north. In the second line, “She lives alone,” Carson is suggesting through juxtaposition that the north’s desolation is comparable to her mother’s isolation and therefore north and mother are one and the same. As such, the third line describing Spring opening ‘like a blade” is not necessarily describing a single point
