Running Nicely
“ Running nicely,” by Morris lurie , is a short story about two brothers who are orphan that are running in the Suburban Melbourne streets. This is their usual run between them but unfortunately this particular run is going to be full of surprise by making the elder brother realize how his younger brother is ahead of him. At the beginning , the brothers have the same speed they are not going to fast and not to slow just steady one beside the other ,but during the run the younger brother will turn the running in a race and the older brother will be defeated ,but the younger brother will wait for him at the end of the race .The author may have been trying to suggests that rivalry may occur between siblings, but that does not mean that they do not love and support each other. This can be observed by examining the characterization and the internal conflict that the story contains.

First of all ,the author show us the rivalry between the brothers by emphasizing on moses internal conflict. Moses, the elder brother is 22 years old and Ben , the younger brother is 12 years old. At the beginning of the story, moses compares himself to his brother the way his brother look ,how he dress and how he move so rapidly when they are running .Looking at his dressing moses realize how badly he looks and admire his brother by the way he dress so nice and ask himself “where’d he get that style?” because they were about to get a run.Moses’s clothes are banal not dress for a run instead ben one’s are appropriate he is ready to run. During their way running in the streets , they were running at the same speed not to fast but not to slow .At a point ,Ben is taking advantage and starts running more faster and overtakes his elder brother . Moses then express a feeling of less self esteem as he said “The thing is , he hasn’t got my flat fleet.Thank god” you see clearly that moses take this excuse to explain why he is not running faster than his brother . He thinks obviously that his brother is better than him that he got all the abilities that he do not have anymore or he just never had. Talking about abilities , moses admire and may be envy the fact that his brother can tell the charlie parker from sonny stitt with his eyes closed, how easily his brother remember things and can explain it very well to a public. Sum of that is about moses lack of self confidence he focus to much on his brother about all he got and forget about what he got too.

Further more , the author shows that there is love between the two of them by the characterization of moses. As moses in the bible ,moses ,the elder brother want to guide his brother to adapt better style of life attitude.Moses want to be in control and eventually have an impact in his brother life .His brother like to watch tv a lot he could spend days , hours and months watching tv and just doing that will be enough to him , but moses want something else for his brother. He want him to break down the chain of his routine and start doing something different that’s why he took ben to run. As he said “… he feels a certain pride at how he has weaned his brother … off that awful habit.” Moses also love spending time with his brother ,“ the best evenings are when ben finished his homework and they turn of the hi-fi and listen to early Coleman Hawkins ,Django and bird”.Even though there is some differences between the them the fact is that they are brothers and they will always take care of each other no matter what happen. Moses really loves ben even if sometime he is jealous of him. In fact, brothers may not always be in peace with each other but that does not mean there is not more love between them.
To conclude , differences between brothers is normal in all family not every relationship between siblings are perfect but there is on fact that they will always have in common it is love they share to each other no matter what. Throw the analyze i made by talking about the internal conflict of moses and his characterization it clearly explain the author point of view by writing this story because between brother there is always competition ,jealousy and envy but that just normal and it occur in every relationship.life is full of obstacles it does not matter how you fell but what matter is who was there to pick you up that is why family is important and even though we have some misunderstanding with them they will always be with us no matter what .

Religion and Gender

...elements and properties. The media Now I would like to focus on the attendance of gender stereotypes in the mass media, which nowadays has a great power and reaches large audiences. In order to create a medium which is universal, understandable and acceptable for numerous and diverse recipients, senders very often use stereotypes, which fill the social life and evoke certain associations. However, mass media not only gives people information and entertainment, but, also affects people’s lives by shaping their opinions, attitudes and beliefs. Men have been perceived as the head of the household and women were mainly housewives. Nowadays the differences between male and female roles are smaller, however mass media still perpetuates traditional gender stereotypes. Moreover, due to their great influence on people’s attitudes, they can depict certain social groups in negative and unrealistic manner. They can be a very useful tool for those remaining power. By manipulating the message, media can create a certain image of reality, which is consistent with the policy of the dominant group. As a result, the reflection of a real world is incomplete and distorted. Although people are aware of the unequal representation of certain social groups in mass media, it is hard to remain objective and insensitive to its influence. Religion interacts very closely with culture and since gender roles are defined by a culture, how religion interacts with culture can affect how religion treats gender roles...

...3. Type/name of the program: How I Met Your Mother, CBS channel 4. Title: How I Met Your Mother, season 2 episode 7 – The Crazy Eyes (Swarley) DESCRIBE THE 20 MINUTE ACTION: Ted, Marshall and Barney are sitting in a coffee shop where they figured out is not as fun as sitting in a bar. While drinking their coffee, Ted notices a heart on Marshall’s cup. He and Barney assume that coffee shop girl has a crush on Marshall. They are encouraging him to invite her on a drink. Marshall brags about how she likes his pumpkin jokes. That in Ted’s opinion can mean only two things – either girl has never heard a joke before, or has a crush on Marshall. Marshall is, however, not convinced. Ted and Barney try to prove him that heart next to his name is meaning something. When doing that, Barney discovers that his name is not written correctly. Instead of Barney is Swarley. He realizes this name will stick to him. Second scene takes place at Robin’s apartment. Robin is girlfriend of Ted. She is on the phone with her mother, but she is willing to talk to Ted even though her mother is still speaking. Ted tells her about Marshall and his date and that he helped him get the girl. Robin discovers that look, that made her sleep with Ted was fake. She can’t believe she fell for it until Ted reminds her that she has a familiar look for seducing. Brief Character Analysis of Barney Stinson

...Barnabus “Barney” Stinson: A Legen….Wait for It…Dary but Brief Character Analysis Ivy Tech Community College PSYC 101 Barnabus “Barney” Stinson: A Legen….Wait for It…Dary but Brief Character Analysis Barnabus “Barney” Stinson is one of the main characters of the show “How I Met Your Mother”, portrayed by Neil Patrick Harris. “How I Met Your Mother” is a comedy sitcom on CBS about five friends living in New York, which centers on Ted Mosby and his quest to find true love. The series is narrated by the future Ted Mosby telling his children an extremely long and elaborate story about how he met their mother. Barney Stinson is one of Ted’s best friends, and a great source of comedy for the show. Barney is a serial womanizer with father issues and questionable actions. He has a unique personality and uses crazy and elaborate tactics to seduce women. His single mother raised Barney and his older brother James. Barney and James both asked about their fathers but their mother would either lie to them or change the subject. Throughout his childhood, Barney was constantly lied to by his mother to protect his feelings. For example, Barneys mother told him he could not play on the basketball team because he was to good and it would be unfair to the other players, when in reality the coach did not want him on the team. Barney was an unpopular child and was picked on and bullied by other kids his age. One major thing that happened in Barneys adulthood that helped shape his character...

Himym & Sexist Ideology

...How I Met Your Mother Show and the Sexist Ideology The television show, How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM) was first aired on CBS television in the year 2005. Its airing continued until March 2014 with its different episodes eliciting a lot of public attention and curiosity partly because of the unique way in which its core theme was being passed to the audience. Throughout the TV show, Ted Mosby emerges as an unmatched main character. It is through the activities of Ted and his group of close friends that live in Manhattan that Ted manages to articulate to his daughter and son the various issues, activities, and challenges that he addresses as he falls in love with their mother – Ted’s wife. In this paper, I argue that the show has a sexist ideology that emphasizes the fact that women are easy to manipulate and can be used in any way that a man desires (Matterhorn 4-13; Capps 1-3). The sexist or feminist ideology is very dominant in the show. The relationship between Ted Mosby and other characters plays an important role in communicating critical love relationships in a comic way. The use of comedy greatly helps the film writers and actors to incorporate vital messages in a rather jovial manner. Issues that would otherwise be considered sensitive are therefore portrayed in a keen and very peculiar manner that also addresses the challenges and good experiences that people in relationships often experience. Indeed, Ted is a character in the CBS television show that is over focused...

Andrew Carnegie: The Death Of John D. Rockefeller

...This episode starts off just recapping some of things that happened in the first episode. Cornelius Vanderbilt died after a long life of hard work in the business of the railroads. Jon D. Rockefeller shot onto the scene as one of the most successful oil men in America, and as a result almost completely put the railroads out of business. A man that still managed to keep his railroad alive was Tom Scott and hid protege Andrew Carnegie. When Rockefeller found out that Scott had built an oil line that basically undermined the ones that he had already built, he pulled all of his oil off Scott’s train and ultimately put Scott out of business. The fall of Scott’s railroad empire was a huge blow to him and was ultimately caused his death. This was a traumatic experience for Carnegie as Scott was a very important figure in his life. Before Scott died he took Carnegie to the mighty Mississippi and told him his plan to build a bridge across the river to connect the East and West sides of the United States. Carnegie saw this as an opportunity to make it big in the business world just like his mentor Scott did with the railroads. Carnegie from that point on started to meet with different designers and men who had a background in bridge building. Every man that he would speak to kept telling him that it was impossible and that it was never going to work because the iron that they had available at the time wasn’t strong enough to with stand the weight of the bridge. Steel at the time was a...

...What are the qualities of a great story? It has to be memorable or extraordinary. The story could not take place without unique characters, and would be dull without an interesting plot. Without these qualities, a story becomes boring and is lost in the realm of mediocrity. In CBS’s hit sitcom How I Met Your Mother, Ted Mosby embarks on the journey of storytelling. In the year 2030, Ted tells his two children of the epic tale of how he met their mother 25 years earlier. Seven seasons later, the story continues, and is as great as ever. Through funny, believable characters portrayed by excellent actors, gut busting humor, and an emotionally appealing storyline, this show has become a staple of primetime television. Over the course of seven seasons, viewers of the show have seen great changes to the characters, but they retain the initial qualities that made them beloved from the first season. Josh Radnor plays the main character, Ted Mosby. Ted is an architect living in an apartment in New York City with his roommate from college, Marshall Eriksen, played by Jason Segel, and his girlfriend Lily, played by Alyson Hannigan. Played by Neil Patrick Harris, Barney Stinson is the womanizing “wingman” who helps Ted with his endeavors as a bachelor. On one of Barney and Ted’s bar-scene adventures, Ted meets the girl of his dreams, Robin Scherbatsky, played by Cobie Smulders. Ted can be easily described as a helpless romantic. He tries his best to believe...

How I Met My Husband

...Analyzing of How I Met My Husband ENG 125 May 24, 2014 The features of a short story give structure to the storyline providing a fictional narrative of real life situations. How features are utilized in storytelling can contribute to how the reader is affected by the story and the overall understanding behind the story. Point of view and symbols are features that contribute significantly to the overall theme in How I Met My Husband by Alice Munro. An event in Edie’s life as a young teenage girls helps to shape her understanding of finding love in an unexpected manner. Edie first begins to experience life away from her family structure and norms when she is sent to live with and work for the Peebles. This is her first experience with things she is unfamiliar with, but yet curious enough to explore when she explains “the only thing I did not like about working there, in fact was feeling half hungry a lot of the time (Clugston, 2010 para 25). Edie solved this problem by hiding food under her bed. The story is told in first person point of view which contributes to Edie telling the intimate details of how her experience led to how she met her husband. While the story does not give you much insight into how the other characters in the story felt about Edie’s experience, it does invite you into how Edie was affected by her interactions with the characters as she matures throughout the story. The story opens up with a description of the first symbol, a shiny plane arriving...

Compare and Contrast

...Comparing and Contrasting “The Story of an Hour” and “How I Met My Husband”. Lora Cruse Ashford University ENG125 11/20/2014 In this essay I will be comparing and contrasting two great short stories. One being “The Story of an Hour” written by Kate Chopin in 1854 and the other being “How I Met my Husband” written by Alice Munro in 1974. The two short stories share the theme of gender roles/marriage. That being said,, I will be going over plot, point of view and tone. Sometimes women feel like they are trapped in their marriage, and sometimes women cannot wait to become married. Kate Chopin's “The Story of an Hour represents a negative view of marriage. Every individual takes a different approach when enduring the loss of a loved one. Whether it is bursting into tears or being miserable. When a wife loses a husband, she typically tends to be in a state of depression. The feeling of losing your significant other is a piercing agony going through one's heart, but in this case the feeling of loss can turn into someone's freedom. For Louise Mallard she had an erratic reaction when she was informed that her husband had been allegedly killed in a train accident. She locks herself in her room and sits in front of the window in desolation. She begins to ponder how her life will be without her husband. The sorrow that Mrs. Mallard felt in the beginning slowly turns into joy. “Free body and soul free!” (Chopin...
