A woman is diagnosed with cancer. A young boy loses his family from a car accident. Steven is stoned to death for professing his belief. (The Holy Bible, NIV 2004, Acts 7) Job loses all of his possessions and family. (Job 1-42) Every day, everyone is faced with suffering and pain. This causes humans to constantly ponder the question, “why would a loving God allow suffering?” While on this earth, whether it be by trials, tribulation, or persecution, suffering afflicts everyone; however, God has a reason and a plan and will ultimately balance the books. (Schaeffer) While God will justify all in the end, He nevertheless has a purpose for the current sufferings of man. For example, God sometimes will allow one to suffer as punishment for a …show more content…
The bible states, “The Lord disciplines those he loves, and He punishes everyone He accepts as a son.” (Hebrews 12:6) Technically, all suffering is from sin, but God will occasionally discipline those who defy Him. Although suffering can result as chastisement, God may also use it to bring people to or closer to Him. D. A. Carson quotes in his book How Long, O Lord, “For a fallen world, pain and suffering can be God’s megaphone, to an individual or to a nation, distracting our attention from the selfishness of a life that functionally disowns God, no matter what we say in our creeds.” (Carson, 116) People who live an easier life are more likely to turn away from God because they begin to believe that they can live a life without Him. However, right when they think they have everything under control, God slaps them in the face with suffering and they come crawling back to Him. God will allow suffering as punishment for a particular sin and to show people how much they need him, but there is still yet another reason He will allow

Diversity Strategy for My Organization

...a diverse blend of backgrounds, cultures, and styles. Peter Senge in “The Fifth Discipline” states that only learning organizations can sustain in a high level in this highly competitive world. Today’s leaders who work in the global business must create and force the need for change. The task is not to eliminate tension associated with this process, but rather minimize its effects. This paper addresses the subject of diversity. The purpose of this paper is to provide an objective reflection of existing conditions at The Fallen Branch Studio where diversity has made significant improvements in the company’s condition. Diversity Strategy for My Organization The United States of America is the most diverse country in the world. For this reason, diversity is discussed more here then it is in the Europe. Diversity presents both challenges and opportunities for all organizations to compete for an advantage in the global marketplace. Every company looks at diversity from a different perspective. People usually associate diversity with things that they see on the surface such as age, race, ethnicity, language, religion, or sex. However, diversity also includes beliefs, values, viewpoints and ways of behaving. Diversity is not just about differences, it is also about realizing how people are similar even though they may seem to be behaving in different ways. The key to understanding this is to be aware of biases, recognize where they come from, and do not let them lead...

...Why has world trade grown faster than world output? By Mark Dean of the Bank’s International Economic Analysis Division and Maria Sebastia-Barriel of the Bank’s Structural Economic Analysis Division. Between 1980 and 2002, world trade has more than tripled while world output has ‘only’ doubled. The rise in trade relative to output is common across countries and regions, although the relative growth in trade and output varies greatly. This article attempts to explain why the ratio of world trade to output has increased over recent decades. It provides a brief review of the key determinants of trade growth and identifies proxies that will enable us to quantify the relative importance of the different channels. We estimate this across a panel of ten developed countries. This will allow us to understand better the path of world trade and thus the demand for UK exports. Furthermore this approach will help us to distinguish between long-run trends in trade growth and cyclical movements around it. Introduction In the past few decades there has been an increasing integration of the world economy through the increase of international trade. The volume of world trade(1) has increased significantly relative to world output between 1980 and 2002 (see Chart 1). Some of this increase can be accounted for by the fact that traded goods have become cheaper over time relative to those goods that are not traded. However, even in nominal terms the trade to GDP ratio has increased over this...

Explore Oscar Wilde's Presentation of Women in a Woman of No Importance

...published in 1893. This was a time of change in traditional English society, the class system, that has stood in place for so many years, was brought into question, a long with the role of women in society with early ideas of gender equality and ‘women’s suffrage’ campaigns. In ‘A woman of no importance’ Wilde explores these changing views and offers several, contrasting presentations of women that existed in Upper Class Victorian society, which I will explore in this essay. One presentation, which some may perceive as the most obvious one, is that women are weak, feeble creatures who need male influence in their lives in order to be able to function. There are several examples of women being presented this way throughout the play; firstly, the way in which Mrs Arbuthnot is shown to be completely dependent on the males in her life throughout the play, firstly on George Harford, and then on Gerald. In the passionate speech she makes to Gerald at the end of act 3 she tells him, in the third person, of her undying love for George she felt at the age of eighteen, ‘he made her love him so much that she left her father’s house’, for her to leave her home and ‘(to break her) father’s heart’, Rachel must have felt that she could not live without George, showing her total devotion and dependence on him. Earlier in the play, we see how dependent Mrs Arbuthnot later becomes, on her son, Gerald when she begs Lord Illingworth to ‘leave (her) the walled-in garden and the well of water; the ewe-lamb...

Environmental Scanning Introduction “The careful monitoring of an organization’s internal and external environments for detecting early signs of opportunities and threats that may influence its current and future plans” is called environmental scanning (Environmental Scanning, 2012). PPQ Parts plans to expand their company globally to Germany and Japan. The environmental scan of these two countries will include the economy, competition, and political stability of those two countries. The company has to consider factors such as managerial and financial strengths and weaknesses as well as long term and short term goals for the company. The location for the global implementation is vital and should include benefits and limitations for the expansion. The Economy Germany’s economy was beating the recession that began across the world in 2009, its unemployment rates were down and GDP was up, that was until recent trends that have predicted that the recession will catch up to them. Germany is still in better shape than its peers but has to make changes to the way they are running things or they will see the recession in their country rather than just around them. Germany had its labor market growing but its growth has started to slow and the confidence in the businesses has fallen. German manufacturing has shrunk, retail sales has fallen, and unemployment...

An Old Woman

...between three quatrains and an ending couplet, "To India My Native Land" is a song of love and deep emotion from Henry Louis Vivian Derozio to his "fallen country," India. The poem was published before Derozio's untimely death at the age of twenty-two from cholera in 1831. The abab abcc dede ff rhyme scheme employed by Derozio is most clearly identifiable as a variation of Edmund Spenser's Amoretti rhyme scheme. In Derozio's, there is Spenserian concatenation (rhyme and meaning linkage) at the cc couplet in the second quatrain. It is at this couplet that the poetic speaker hits the crescendo of his song and reveals the emotional motivation behind the story he tells and behind the resolution he will promise. In an apostrophe addressing India, the poetic persona, who is tightly associated with Derozio himself, recounts India's "days of glory past" when glory, reverence, and deity were like a "beauteous halo circled round thy brow." These four short lines of iambic pentameter paint a vivid picture of the India that existed before British colonization. They also reveal the deep emotional ties the persona has to the memory of the true India, the free India, the India that commanded respect from other civilizations.  The address to India continues in the second quatrain, but line 5 turns the topic from glory to misery. India's fallen estate under colonization is lamented and compared to a subdued eagle whose wings are chained, which renders the bird powerless as it grovels "in...

...global market player. During the years, it has acquired and merged with a lot of beer companies. This practice symbolizes a pillar of the company’s strategy: developing brand portfolio. Nowadays, the company possesses more than 200 brands. Nevertheless, the company has now entered a lot of markets and it is present in the most important countries. In addition, the beer market in Western Europe and US is now mature, even decreasing. Consequently, the big issue for ABInbev it is how can the firm grow in a mature market when it has already possessed the local favorite beers in all countries in which it competes and has bought huge amount of breweries? Problem Statement: How can ABInbev still grow in the long-term view? 2) Analysis of the situation What are the market trends in the beer industry? First of all, we decided to examine the beer industry trends in order to understand better the environment in which ABInbev evolves. We observed that, in terms of supplier revenues, the beer market in USA has fallen from 56.0% in 1999 to 47.8% in 2014 (Distilled Spirits Council of the United States, 2015). This decline is even more evident in the light beer category. In contrast, the spirits or liquor market share has been consistently rising. We observed also that the number of young drinkers who prefer beer was down from 71% in the early 1990s to 41% in 2012–2013 (Distilled Spirits Council of the United States, 2015). This represents a significant issue given that young male adults...

Economics

...Brazil is ranked second on The Economist’s list of top emerging markets in the world and boasts the largest national economy in all of Latin America. On a global scale, Brazil has the world’s seventh largest economy and is predicted to become one of five largest economies in the near future. The Brazilian economy is sustained by the country’s abundant natural resources and impressively large labor force. (Rhoter, 2010) The following paper will examine this nation’s currency, the Brazilian real, against the United States dollar in order to perform an accurate macroeconomic analysis. The exchange-traded fund for Brazil, EWZ will be studied over the five year period ending in 2010. Starting in January of 2005, the exchange-traded fund (ETF) consistently remained in the low 20s (in U.S. dollars). February saw a slight rise in the value as the EWZ reached over 25 dollars before dropping again to the low 20s in March and April. As 2005 continued, the currency began again rising, but this time did not stop in the mid 20s. August saw the EWZ value reach almost 30 and by the end of the year the ETF was already in the mid 30s. It continued to rise in the new year, reaching an all-time high above 46 dollars before dropping back into the 30s in late May. The value further recessed in June back to values of the previous year before rebounding and remaining in the mid 40s for the final two months of the year. Should have a chart here to provide a visual aide and not just rounded off numbers...

The First Book of Enoch VI-VIII VI. 1. ‘And it came to pass when the children of men had multiplied that in those days were born unto them beautiful and comely daughters. 2. And the angels, the children of heaven, saw and lusted after them, and said to one another: ‘Come, let us choose us wives from among the children of men and beget us children.’ 3. And Semjaza, who was their leader, said unto them: ‘I fear ye will not indeed agree to this deed, and I alone shall have to pay the penalty of a great sin.’ 4. And they answered him and said: ‘Let us all swear an oath, and all bind ourselves by mutual imprecations not to abandon this plan but to do this thing.’ 5. Then sware they all together and bound themselves by mutual imprecations upon it. 6. And they were all two hundred; who descended in the days of Jared on the summit of Mount Hermon, and they called it Mount Hermon, because they had sworn and bound themselves by mutual implications upon it. 7. ...Paradise Lost By John Milton The Book note Table of Contents Introduction Cast of Characters Plot Summary An Analysis of Major Characters Satan Adam Eve Chapter Summary and Analysis Book 1 Book 2 Book 3 Book 4 Book 5 and 6 Book 7 Book 8 and 9 Book 10 Book 11 and 12 Symbols and Themes Quotes The Quiz Introduction John Milton was born in London on December 9, 1608. He was the son of a successful Protestant merchant, and was provided with an excellent education that included the opportunity to travel widely throughout Europe. He was fluent in a number of classical as well as modern languages, including Greek, Latin, Hebrew, Aramaic, Spanish, Italian, French and Dutch. In 1625, he began his attendance at Cambridge University with the intention of becoming a clergyman in the Church of England, but was disillusioned by what he considered the arrogance and ignorance of his fellow students. He decided that his true calling was to serve God and his country as an author and poet. Inspired by Roman poets of antiquity, and particularly Virgil, Milton aspired to create a great epic poem in the English language. He considered two other distinctly British topics for his epic—the story of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, and the military exploits of the general Oliver Cromwell—before settling on the Biblical story of Adam and Eve and their fall from God’s grace through disobedience. Milton was politically active throughout his life, and was outspoken...

...HL309 Comparative Literature August 2011 semester Description The module will examine the binary categories ‘modern’/‘traditional’ (and/or the ‘primitive’) as they appear in modernising societies. First, we look at representative literature from (what was until recently known as) Great Britain. The question is: why did the world’s homeland of the Industrial Revolution have a fascination with adventure, feats of derring-do and the primitive? We look at a young reader’s Victorian adventure novel, the long-enduring The Coral Island, and the later short stories of Rudyard Kipling (the ‘Bard’ of Empire), and examine the (contradictory?) lure of the primitive, even as British modernity is taken for granted. Second, the module will proceed to examine some major Chinese and Japanese writers and intellectuals (and an Indian poet and critics, the Nobel Prize-winning Rabindranath Tagore) and see how northeast Asian culture was broadly affected by their sense of Western modern superiority in technology, political organisation and literary (and other forms of creative) culture. Both China and Japan, the major countries in East-Southeast Asia, were never colonised, but they were intimidated by the presence of the Great Western Powers (and their colonies) in the region. Japan after the Meiji Restoration (1868) became the first modern Asian nation-state, and their attempts at intensive (and disruptive) modernisation of their culture had a profound impact on the whole region – and this desire...
